I'm not (yet) a skilled farmer. I bought 10 acres on the Coquille river in an area that gets 55 inches of rainfall. I also have a very nice spring. I made certain that I bought property at low elevation so that the water could only be stolen by pumping, not just diverting. The river runs both Salmon and Steelhead. I gave up fishing when I was 10 years old,, no patience. I guess that I need to learn to drink beer and catch fish.

I can get a full grain crop out of 4 inches (correctly timed inches) of rain a year
you should either try fishing again or try some grain planting
grain is super easy to grow if you have the room for it
vegetables are harder, but you need less tools
start looking at what others in the area are growing to see what works the best in your area,
also check out what was historically grown there (like from before they had irrigation or electricity)
but if you are on a river, then you have all the water you want, and that is by the hardest part of setting up independent farming
