Russian military has an EMP-type of weapon called the Khibiny which they have mounted on the wingtips their Su models of jets. They've already used it to cripple the USS Donald Cook.

If they have that, then you know they have a nuclear EMP-type of weapon.

So how vulnerable is the US to an EMP attack? I would say that we're not prepared at all. It looks like we could lose the entire grid for the US. Of course, that would be the end of America.

The EMP pulse from an atomic weapon is just a blast that fries everything. The smaller weapons are an interesting design. Imagine you have a coil of wire wrapped around a strong metal tube. Imagine the coil has a current circulating in it. Imagine that you set off a charge in the tube. The charge propagates from one end to the other. As the tube breaks,the current has no where to go and is "cornered" in the last wind. When the last wind breaks, the current is discharged into the air in a few pico-seconds. Anything that can act as an antenna picks up this current and fries the electronics that it is attached to.

You are correct. A nuclear EMP device is designed to destroy infrastructure by destroying anything electronic or electrical. However, I believe that they are specifically designed to produce huge amounts of gamma radiation, which is used to create the EMP. An EMP about 400 miles above the US would send it back to the stone age.

Berg, I do not dispute the nasty effects of EMP and the fact that such threat is real. I do have a problem with tagging Russia as a potential source or rather convenient scapegoat to blame afterwards. Yes, it might be used as a pretext to start a fight. That's what bullies do and blame others for giving them a reason.
Recently US is trying to blame Iran for 9/11. I guess, better than Batman gone mad as some people could probably question such possibility.
Yes, Dick and Janet warnings about the possible or even imminent EMP attacks should be taken seriously as they certainly know something we don't and won't, until it happens.
And yes, I would be certainly worried about the infrastructure and ageing power plants which are rubber stamped for another 30-50yrs instead of being shot down as well as ageing power grid. However, look over your shoulder first, before pointing finger at the "enemy" as being conveniently shown to you on TV screen.
I've been in military service and learned to distinguish between different types of B.S - as excreted by each side during so called "Cold War". Both stink and can certainly disrupt your senses, including true sense of reality.

When the Russian economy crashes, they will attack the US, and I believe the first thing they will use is an EMP. That's the bottom line. We might buy ourselves a little time by not helping the Russian economy to crash, but will we do that? No, our leaders won't.
