Sunflowers | Golden Spiral

Here are a few pics of my sunflowers. Finally started to open yesterday. 2 are just starting to open and 1 is almost totally open. I love these flowers because the golden ratio type pattern is so prominent and amazing!

These are organic California Greystripes, supposed to be the best for actually making good edible seeds.

I love sunflowers and grow them every year, they smell
gorgeous too!
I dry them & hang them out in winter for the birds.
Mine are organic too & I keep some seeds to regrow etc
I think it's a good sign there's so much wildlife on them!

I once started sunflowers from seed in the dead of snowy winter in Santa Fe New Mexico. Then moved them to California along with all our possessions in a rental truck, out of about 30 plants 6 survived the freezing nights during the trip and grew into beauties like your!

But yours are clearly sunflower crop circles

Here are 2 pics of a sunflower plant in my yard.

The first is a closeup of the main flower.

The second is the top part of this plant that has OVER 25 flowers on the same plant growing.

I searched and I guess it happens sometimes. Recessive genes from wild sunflower coming thru. Before domestication, they had multiple smaller flowers. With domestication, fewer and eventually one flower that was quite a bit larger.

I plan to take the seeds and grow them next year - only seeds from this plant. Next time one blooms with multiple flowers, I'll take the seeds from those, etc... I want to see if I can get back to the roots

Personally, even if these don't have a monster flower with a lot of seeds, I want to see what is possible.

Anyway, thought it was pretty interesting!

I kept visualizing what would happen if I cropped the top of it before the flower started was visible. I thought maybe it could cause 2 heads to grow. Oh well, I didn't touch it and over 25 flowers. Wow! I take that as a sign of abundance!
