Hi Vortex;

FYI this design goes back to at least the late 1800"s with many variations. They were spring powered (wind-up) toys and very popular then as now. They made a version in cast iron which was a mechanical penny bank where the hand came out, grabbed a penny and took it back into the box. As you can imagine, kids loved them, but they are very rare now as they wore them out and discarded them. I had a wind-up of this version from the 1940"s at one time but my kids destroyed it years ago.
