    Thatcher Effect

The Thatcher effect or Thatcher illusion is a phenomenon where it becomes difficult to detect local feature changes in an upside down face, despite identical changes being obvious in an upright face. It is named after British former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher on whose photograph the effect has been most famously demonstrated.

So what does it mean if the effect is very obvious to a viewer?

The mystery of the Thatcher effect--solved?

In psychology, however, it refers to the ghastly impression that can be caused by inverting the eyes and mouth in a photographic portrait. It was first discussed in a very brief article published in Perception, in 1980, by Peter Thompson, a psychologist at the University of York.

Thompson was exploring the related questions of 1) why it is so hard to recognize an inverted face and 2) how much information is conveyed by the eyes and mouth alone. Given the importance of eyes and mouths as signifiers of identity, one hypothesis was that if you inverted a face but kept the eyes and mouth right-side-up, the face would be easier to identify.

But in the latest issue of Psychological Science, three researchers from the University of Western Australia conclude that the "grotesque effect" has largely to do with "inconsistent lighting cues." It is not the inverted eyes and mouths per se that cause the illusion but the fact that while most of the face is lit from one direction, the eyes and mouth are lit from another.

Once that lighting anomaly is eliminated (through simple photo-editing), the "mean bizarreness rating" of the Thatcherized faces drops down into the normal range. Yes, they asked research subjects to use such a scale.

A three dimensional illusion using solid objects

Here's a 3 dimensional illusion which was chosen as best illusion of 2010. Balls inserted at the end of troughs appear to roll uphill to the center of the device. The illusion is due to the angle of viewing, which at first causes the center to appear as the highest point, but when the device is rotated we can see this is clearly not so.

It really does drive home the importance of not taking just one perspective as the truth - as factual as the very first observations may be (fact: all the balls roll to the center by some force), the truth regarding why and how are often obscured by lack of knowledge and a haste to make conclusions without all the evidence.

I've seen this demonstration before, but thanks Rick for helping us review it again

There are many reasons why a person would play mind games. One reason is to see how another person feels about them, yet they have no intention of exposing their own feelings.

All mind games are a way to stay safe, get information, and not risk vulnerability. Some play mind games out of immaturity or meanness, not realizing or caring that they are hurting someone.

This is the coolest blind spot optical ive ever seen.

Put your hand over your left eye and watch the small stationary cross. The large moving object will dissappear when it goes into your blind spot.

Wow, now that is very interesting - I have no blind spot

I tried various distances, closing my eye, covering my eye, turning my head a bit left and right, strafing left and right at different positions and nothing, no disappearing

I wonder if this has anything to do with why I cannot see the Lambright effect

None of those reasons apply to this thread. If you view the posts, you will see that we are just offering some very unusal visual illusions for the purposes of both entertainment and enlightenment. You will probably find the other kind of mind games, that you speak of, at a different forum site.

It means that you are more observant and analytical than a great many other viewers who simply accept an image at face value. (pun intended)

Most people see the figure spinning in just one direction. If she turns both ways for you then you have a 160 or better IQ. You can make her turn the other way, or alternately turn back and forth, by looking at the top right or bottom left of the pic.
I tried pranayama on this today and it worked!

She was turning right for me...so I closed my right nostril, breathing through left side nose activates the left side of brain. My breath had been coming out strongly thru right nostril. It worked, she switched direction immediately!

Point of alt nostril breathing (pranayama) is to get air coming out of both nostrils equally...then both sides of brain are balanced and your Adipatti (crown) chakra opens up wide...letting in all that prana...in prep for meditation, spiritual work.

                                My fun for the afternoon.
