Given the past few hiccups from the sun have caused havoc with satellites, it is not unreasonable to think that solar flares are a real and possible problem.
A good sized flare would not only fry the satellites but could cause damage on the ground as well.
The military will no doubt have some hardened electronics which won't be fried, plus backups in shielded storage, basically just faraday cage shielding, but how could average people with limited resources and time set up adequate protection for their personal electronics, like computers and memory storage plus vehicles?
Is it possible to protect vehicle electronics this way?

if a solar flare gets shot our way and is strong enough to knock out satellites it would undoubtedly knock out the transformers on the ground as well. Of all chaos scenarios That probably has the highest percentage of occuring around 2012. Considering the sun is a million times bigger than earth the flare itself would probably cover the united states.

Even if it only hit a couple of states affecting 10-20 million people, how long do you think it would take to replace several thousand transformers? It would be crazy.

It says in every generation people will claim all the signs are right and the end of times is near. This will happen over and over until we breed ourselves out of existence or a natural disaster causes our extinction.
