Cops to California Voters: Legalize It! | Criminal Justice | Change.org

The letter's release comes after all nine former heads of the Drug Enforcement Agency -- that is, the former heads of a bureaucracy with a vested interested in maintaining costly drug prohibition, regardless of its failure -- wrote Attorney General Eric Holder last month expressing "grave concern" about Proposition 19 and asking him to suppress the will of California voters should they embrace legalization. (See Firedoglake founder Jane Hamsher's response).

    -----------------------------------

Just more proof the federal government does NOT cater to the will of
the citizens. They have their own agenda and the voters aren't a part
    of it.

This looks like legalizing it in a big way and not just medicinal. Possibly
so that any adult can buy it like at a smoke shop and simply pay tax.
Will generate billions in revenue, stimulate the economy in California
and reduce crime. Then, it should be an obvious ok for growing hemp
for industrial use there - another massive multi-billion dollar industry
    waiting to happen.

Here is a response against the DEA agents that don't respect the
    constitution.
Just Say Now Responds to DEA Hysteria on Prop 19 | FDL Action

And a quote from Mexico's National Security Adviser:

"Mexico’s National Security Adviser Alejandro Poire responded, saying that the drug cartels are “nourished by the enormous, gigantic demand for drugs in the United States.” That demand is something that the nine DEA chiefs, and their failed drug war, have done nothing to diminish."

Seems to be common sense that changing the source from illegal drug
cartels in Mexico to legal suppliers in California will simply take away much
of the reason for the cartels to exist and take away a major portion of
    their funding.

Of course the DEA thrives on criminal activity and want as much as possible
so it legitimizes their own existence.
    Sincerely,
    Aaron Murakami

An interesting point. But what many people are not aware of is that indirectly this is one of the reasons why we have our current laws. Back in the 1930’s newspaper mogul William Hearst also owned a lot of woodland and logging companies, these provided the wood that was used to make his newsprint paper. At that time some individuals were considering making paper by using hemp rather the wood. Apparently they could make as much paper from one acre of hemp as could be made from four acres of woodland and the following year that same acre of hemp could be harvested again. But it would take 20 years before the woodland could be re-harvested. This of course would have rendered most of his land holdings worthless. Something needed to be done!

So using his newspaper he started a campaign that would render his competitors “raw material” illegal.

Since then fighting this “reefer madness” has grown into the multi-billion dollar business that it is today. If we were to get rid of our marijuana laws just think of all the police and correctional officers that would be out of work. Politicians could not claim they are protecting society. The CIA would have to find other sources of income to fund their clandestine operations.

Oh the utter horror of it all. How would we ever survive?

Legalizing it only to make tax money how pathetic , it should be legal as its the ONLY safe MEDICINE /stimulant in the world . Should be legal in PRINCIPLE. Lets not forget its the highest grossing bio mass crop, that's why DuPont and the petrochemical industry conspired to make it illegal, the phony government sponsored medical and refer madness stuff is all propaganda and part of the suppression.

There is not one plant which has as many medicinal uses, its the safest drug (i call it a medicine) in the world. The only time you can get killed from pot, is if you get run over by the Hash truck transporting it

Often, the best way to de-fang a (perceived) threat is by removing the context in which it is a threat.
If mary jane is legal, then it marginalizes the criminal activity associated with it & allows law enforcement to focus on REAL social threats (crack, human smuggling).

Yes. Aside from smoking it to just relieve the undesirable side effects of chemotherapy I have read that using the oil from hemp on cancerous growths or ingesting it will actually cure cancer.

But there is a problem chemo drugs are big business and can cost thousands of dollar a month, how much would it cost to grow a weed???
That would be unfair competition and we don't want that do we?
