wikileaks vs censorship = a triumph of freedom of speech.
What about shutting down WikiLeaks? Easier said than done, as it turns out... | News.com.au
This article is a pretty good roundup of the last week's events surrounding the whole wikileaks drama. It explains who's behind the new wikileaks.ch website (Sweden's Piratpartiet, or Pirate Party, Sweden's third largest political party, and staunch advocates of freedom of speech and personal privacy and transparency of administration.) You heard right. There is a political party, one that has seats on the EU, mind you, who's stated aim is the protection of freedom of speech and your right to personal privacy. (If you do like it, move to Sweden! )
Anyway, this is rapidly becoming the frontline in the War Against Oppression. You heard. the same people who brought you the war on terror are the oppressors, and this, well, this is their REAL enemy, the supporters of free speech, good people who just want to live their lives without stormtroopers patting them down at checkpoints and their lives being tracked by corporate interests who're in bed with duplicitious governments like mine. The people who say governments should be transparent and accountable for their every action. The tech savvy nobodies on the internet who know how to keep a website alive through lawful, decentralised mirroring.
It must be a very frustrating, and perhaps even frightening time to be one of the invisible unelected elite who run countries like the USA and Australia. It must be a bit frightening to see the serfs in revolt, saying, "you know what? You can't take this website down, we won't let you. We're going to read those cables, and you can't stop us."
I'm starting to think, maybe all this "Julian's a CIA plant" is just another offensive in the power's that be's ongoing anti wikileaks smear campaign. My gut has always told me that website is on MY side, that like me, that site is about social justice, freedom of information and exposing the evil things our governments do behind closed doors. Bare in mind they've been around for years, this cablegate thing is all new, and it's misleading to say five plus years of whistleblowing was all for the sake of releasing one small parcel of pro CIA fluff. Nah, it makes more sense that as well as trying to knock the website offline, kill or imprison the website's founder, dark powers would be also trying to smear the guy and cast doubt on his motives and intentions. After all, this is the first time anyone at all has accused wikileaks of being in bed with any government. That's not their charter at all, and everything they've done since their inception leads me to believe otherwise. I suppose next someone will say he's a communist, that old fear pill always makes a huge percentage of the sheeple hate, fear and not want to trust who or whatever that label gets applied to.
interesting times indeed.
