Obama Eyeing Internet ID for Americans - Tech Talk - CBS News

Call foul first and then RTFA?

"These digital IDs would be offered to consumers by online vendors for financial transactions.

Schmidt stressed today that anonymity and pseudonymity will remain possible on the Internet. "I don't have to get a credential if I don't want to," he said. There's no chance that "a centralized database will emerge," and "we need the private sector to lead the implementation of this," he said."

National Strategy for Trusted Identities = NASTI

"The Obama administration is currently drafting what it's calling the National Strategy for Trusted Identities in Cyberspace, which Locke said will be released by the president in the next few months."

I don't trust it - just more intrusion.

      National Strategy for Trusted Identities

      NaSTI - sounds NASTY!

I walked out of a store on friday, the product I wanted to buy still on the shelf and my money still in my hand. Want to know why? Because the store clerk told me it was store policy to require a name and address "for their system," the exchange went like this.

"can I just get your name and address?"
        "what for?"
"we just need it for our records, to do the receipt."
"Oh. Then can you make it out in the name of Cash Sale, and the address as at this store?"
        "I can't do that, I'm sorry, it's policy."
"well, it's my policy to not give out my identity to companies who don't require it. So I'm sorry too, but it looks like you just missed a sale. Tell your boss why."

And I left. And I will never go back.

Edit. what I'm saying is, sites where having a trusted ID is a prerequisite to shop or browse have every right to exist online. So does their competition, who do not require it, to buy, to log in or to sign up. Not requiring it can then become a selling point for the competition, and the question becomes, where will you shop, or sign in?

            Not hiding now!

I was of course showing my bad side when I made the statement we will no further be able to hide. Why? Well we are not hiding now unless one is a very excellent programmer and knows how to spoof. The IP has always been used for generalized back-tracking and even when it is a non-static IP there has always been a log to show a link to the user. Take a close look at the content of your emails and see the embedded-coded info used for cataloging and cross referencing. Your unique ID is already assigned by your provider and exists in multiple DB's. Think for one minute the feds can not just do a fed google on you and pull all the activity from you - well think again. Only difference here is we will now close some open doors and be able to tie credit card - phone, email, searches and site and video visits.

            Got to love the leaders....

I dont know about how they trace IP's but anyone can avoid IP detection by using Proxy addresses. Its an easy setting to change in most browsers.

Yeah, thats how it always starts out. You can choose until they have the system fully integrated with a mass of online vendors then they decide its a choice you shouldnt have to make, and require you to get the credentials.

Im fine with IP addresses, law enforcement should have some means of tracing people who commit crimes and are active online but IP addresses are where it should end.

I congratulate you on your actions to stifle the proliferation of "big brother". My question is, how to you equate them wanting your information as a capitalistic endeavor?

Reason they want to ID everyone?

                  A. Tracking of possible criminals/terrorists.

                  B. Taxation, collections.

                  C. Eventual round up for work camps/extermination.

                  D. All of the above.

I'm not an expert on computer tracking but pre-2000 someone went on my computer to look up electric guitars. He didn't enter any info, just looked at certain web sites.

A few days after that I got a catalog in the snail mail about electric guitars for the first time ever.

That was pretty creepy. I guess it has to do with the ip address being linked to my snail mail address(?)

I have to wonder though, why people are still so suspect of Obama's intentions when I don't see any evidence in my day to day life that he is some kind of dictator.

                    For example has anyone experienced:
-Their grandmother was euthanized against her will and they are worried about this happening to them
-They are in a concentration camp or know someone who is
-Their neighbor who was speaking ill about the government has disappeared off the face of the earth
-There is only one brand of anything available at any store and it is not organic and it is generic
-Government officials come to your home and place of business intimidating people and demanding money
-You can not call on the police to help you during crime

You know what' I'm saying here anyone?

I'm sorry I'm not sure I understand that.

I'm seriously saying I do not experience those things currently in the US.

I'm sorry if you are saying you do in UK. Although Obama is not president of the UK, I would be interested in hearing about one of your personal experiences of those things to learn what it is like for you.

Corporatism, capitalism, same thing. Companies out of control, acting like they have a right to demand this information when in fact the only right any company has is the right to operate 100% within the boundaries of corporate law. Yet there's no lawful recourse for someone who's objecting to being refused service on the basis of choosing not to provide ID, so what does that say about my government's stance on this kind of infraction on my right to privacy? Obama is giving the NaSTI work to the department of Commerce.

I'm pretty sure the franchisee of the store I was in when this happened wasn't a commie. I pretty sure communism isn't where we get chainstores with computer ID databases of what their customers are buying, and who their customers are, and where they live. That's another kind of ism. It's the ugly, totalitarian side of a brave new world, where the illusion of choice keeps the population thinking everything's good, when it isn't.

                              l4l,

Are these issues in your current personal life? Because they seem like news articles spanning from 2007 to current and I'm not understanding the connection to your personal life.

Anyway maybe this is pointless. I was just looking for any evidence of a personal story that would point to Obama's desire to be a dictator because I do not experience that.

I understand there is certain corruption in the world, that I won't try to argue
