  • Suspicious Timing: McGuinty Scraps Offshore Wind Projects in

I'm sure all of you have heard about the ongoing turmoil playing out in Egypt. One of the largest and most significant events to take place in a very long time, this not only is a victory for the citizens of Egypt, but a clear cut victory for the ideals of freedom and democracy. And as you also probably have noticed, the coverage in the media has been unprecedented, as one would expect.

Sooo, if you're like me you have probably been thinking to yourself, "when will the first really negative government announcement get sneaked in amongst the chaos, to be snuffed out by a larger, more explosive story." Well it's here! The Ontario government announced yet another one of their famous flip flops on Friday. The offshore wind projects that they have been sinking millions into, and are to help replace coal by 2014 which is being phased out, has been canceled until further notice.

This is just another setback in a long line of major setbacks for green energy in Ontario, costing us the tax payers millions. Most of these problems are also frustrating in the fact that they are not happening for good rational reasons, but more for strategic political ones, which makes this announcement on one of the heaviest news days in Egypt not so surprising.

SO it annoys me because of A: the obvious reasons, offshore wind is a good idea, and i can't see how it could be that terrible of an environmental impact. it's just a couple poles with blades, and B: Because they tried to sneak it through and stay under the radar announcing it at the same time Murabek was being ousted.

Does anyone know of any other stories from the past week that were under the radar and under reported due to Egypt?

The full article on the offshore wind project can be found below.

Typical Canadian political moves. Please don't get me started. We need demonstrations and revolt in Canada.

Yep. The very same kinds of protests in Yemen, Bahrain, Iran, Sudan (right down to more of those darn news camera grabbing cases of suicide by immoliation in protest of *insert human rights issue here*) and an emerging refugee crisis in Italy. Oh and Assange's extradtion hearing. Pretty big news week, that was. There was even a monster cyclone landed just south of me. Huge newsweek. I expect a lot of stories got missed. Still, good for Egypt.

Canada always seemed to be a fairly rational country, I'm sure you'll be allowed to continue to lobby for cleaner power options without having any riot police come crack your skull. So Keep lobbying. Worthy cause imo. Best of luck with it and good on you for caring.

I watched a show about the Sea Sheperds peacefully demonstrating against people clubbing baby seals in Canada. They then got beat up by the clubbers. The Canadian court ruled that they got what they deserved for being there protesting. Canada ain't perfect either...

Hey speaking of Sea Shepherd, did you hear they've stopped the Japanese whaling ships from processing any whales at all this year? First they beat the whalers to Antartica, then they kept the harpoon boats away from the processing ship, then one of the boats they have chased off a resupply ship that had come 1200km past the line of latitude where anyone is allowed to refuel, stopping the entire fleet from refueling on site (which would have been in breach of internationally binding maritime treaties,) and forcing them all to do a 2,800km round trip mid season to resupply.

So the Sea Shepherd Conservation Foundation have stopped any whales from being processed, and estimate between 10 and 30 whales have been killed. (less than 10% of Japan's self imposed, but still illegal, "research" quota.) And now there's talk the season itself may be cut short. Entirely because of the actions of a bunch of guys and girls (oh and a network of supporters who range from career philanthropists to schoolkids donating a dollar to save the whales,) who all care enough about a problem to personally be a part of the solution. Good result, hey?

The fact they're willing to get beaten up standing up to redneck seal hunters just wins them more points on my scoreboard. Though with a personality like Paul Watson heading up the show, it's hard to know which way things will go in Canada, legal appeal (assault is assault, after all,) or just simply take some bigger lads out onto the ice next year for a reconciling. You have to do that sometimes when you're dealing with modern day hunter/gatherer types. They don't understand much else.

Dang, I love watching the show and now you've spoiled the upcoming season for me... That's great news! I loved last season when the captain of the Ady Gil snuck on board the whaling ship and tried to arrest the captain for running over his boat. Those guys have some guts just to go cruising around out there in the middle of nowhere, let alone tangle with the Japanese whalers. It's been heartbreaking watching them fail or only achieve minimal success season after season.

sorry mate, I forgot whalewars is even a tv show and I could be spoliling. I follow Paul Watson on twitter, he was bragging about it this morning

              May Neptune watch over them.

Anyway, I think I got it wrong. The Japanese whalers are under attack from penguins. Robot penguins. Robot NINJA penguins. And pirate monkeys. I'm pretty sure that's what's happening. So stay tuned, next season will be awesome.

Wow, it was an even bigger news week than I thought. Big news was shadowed by bigger news which was shadowed by Egypt. Crazy! A perfect time to confess your political sins.

No worries mate, I've been spoliled before (at least I think I have). I'm sure I'll get my money's worth of enjoyment in any case. I'm just glad that some have the time, money, and freedom to do some of the things I wish I were doing. Vicarious thrills are sometimes just as exciting as the real life ones.
