    Date: April 21, 2012

UPDATE: One of the two missing workers was found dead. 9 workers injured, 3 residents in the area were also injured (cuts from broken glass). It looks like part of the complex is still burning. The prefectural government does say the depleted uranium is stored at the complex, but there has been no release of toxic materials from the fire, according to the prefectural government. [...]

Someone on Twitter has dug up information from the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) that lists companies that have radioactive waste on the premise. Mitsui Chemicals complex in Yamaguchi Prefecture is one of them. According to the MEXT data from 2009, the complex has 3,379 containers of nuclear waste. [...]

Exactly 26 years ago there was an explosion at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. Whole regions in Russia, Ukraine and Belarus have become unfit for life, and the number of victims has reached one million people today. And experts are still disputing about long-term consequences of the disaster.

[...] its consequences are endless and uncontrollable, and it is impossible to count the exact number of victims. Scientists are still arguing if the number of one million deaths is valid, but when such big numbers are taken into account, the one thing is absolutely clear things are in a bad way. Besides, no one can count how many babies could not be born, and on the lives of how many subsequent generations this disaster will tell in the form of cancer.

"the Navy just sank a Japanese ghost ship wrought with nuclear fallout off the coast of Alaska because they didn't know what else to do with it." The ship was part of the Japanese earthquake and tsunami and was apparently swept out to see with no one on it, but covered in radioactive material. Now fishing along the coast of Alaska, the canneries, and other coastal businesses have been shut down due to nuclear fallout. She said nuclear fallout out is all over the place up there; it's in the water, it's in the soil, it's everywhere. She's bummed out about her job falling through, but also warned "don't eat the seafood...radiation levels are really high."

They have been redirected to push things like climate change instead of looking at the real problems such as Fukushima, GMO Toxins in the food supply and DU, so we cannot expect much more than token protests from them.

An unusual event was declared at the Salem 1 nuclear reactor here this morning after the plant shut down and fire alarms sounded, a spokesman for the plants operator said.

An unusual event is the least serious of four emergency classifications at a nuclear power plant.

Salem 1 automatically shut down at 10:15 a.m., according to Joe Delmar, spokesman for the reactors operator, PSEG Nuclear.
According to Delmar what caused the reactor to trip remains under investigation, but testing was occurring on the reactors emergency cooling system at the time.

Author: Naoya Kon and Takashi Sugimoto
                        Date: May 01, 2012

Despite investigations by four special committees [Gov't, Diet, Tepco, private sector], key questions remain about the crisis at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant [...]

WHAT HAPPENED AT THE NO. 2 REACTOR?

One point that none of the investigative committees has uncovered is the extent of damage to the No. 2 reactor.

At a little after 6 a.m. on March 15, a number of workers at the Fukushima No. 1 plant heard the sound of a large impact.

At 6:18 a.m., during a teleconference with TEPCO headquarters, a plant official said that the sound might have been caused by the bottom of the suppression chamber of the No. 2 reactor falling. [See also: NHK: Suppression chamber "may have been destroyed" at Reactor No. 2 (VIDEO)

At 6:50 a.m., a radiation level of 583 microsieverts per hour was recorded at the main gate to the plant about one kilometer from the No. 2 reactor building. That reading was about eight times the level recorded an hour earlier. At 9 a.m., a radiation level of 11,930 microsieverts was recorded, the highest for the entire accident.

The government panel report said, (Fukushima plant chief) Yoshida felt some sort of explosion occurred in the containment vessel based on information received that a large impact was heard as well as information that the pressure in the suppression chamber of the No. 2 reactor was zero. [...]

The extent of damage to the containment vessel of the No. 2 reactor is unknown. Once that becomes clear it could be possible to point to the No. 2 reactor as the cause of the high radiation levels. [...]

                        Investigations Claim No Explosion

However, the TEPCO panel included an analysis of readings from seismographs at the Fukushima No. 1 plant. There were no observations of shaking caused by an explosion between 6 a.m. and 6:10 a.m. when the sound of an impact was heard at the No. 2 reactor. Shaking was recorded at 6:12 a.m. when an explosion likely occurred at the No. 4 reactor, according to the TEPCO panel.

The government panel also said the impact sound was likely caused by the explosion at the No. 4 reactor. The private-sector panel also rejected the notion that an explosion occurred at the No. 2 reactor.

The panels also could not explain what caused the high radiation levels.

                        Unexplained Damage

TEPCO used an industrial endoscope on March 26 to check the interior of the reactor. The water level was only about 60 centimeters from the bottom of the containment vessel, much lower than estimated. Water pumped into the reactor more than likely has leaked from damaged parts of the core. However, none of the panels have yet explained how that damage occurred.

Koriyama board of education stops decontamination of schools
by Mochizuki - Fukushima Diary on April 30th, 2012

Prof. Yamauchi Tomoya from Kobe university confessed the board of education of Koriyama city stops decontamination, on the radio show MBS Tanemaki journal. (Assistant professor Koide from Kyoto university regularly talks on this radio show as well.)

He is an expert of decontamination. On the radio show, he talked his experience when he went to a kindergarten and elementary school of Koriyama city to assist decontamination but the board of education stopped him from decontaminating. The reason was not talked.

He also added, the safety limit is 0.23μSv/h. If it goes over 0.23μSv/h, local government must decontaminate the school areas, but actually it was difficult to find somewhere less than 0.23μSv/h though it was after decontamination.

Contaminated soil was already removed and new soil was added, but places surrounding the playground of elementary school or kindergarten are still highly contaminated, radiation comes over the playground. If those severely contaminated areas are not owned by schools, it is impossible to decontaminate it.

                        Children are still living there.

In case coolant system stopped in any SFP, Tepco cant measure temperature
by Mochizuki - Fukushima Diary on April 30th, 2012

In the daily press conference of 4/27/2012, Tepco stated they lose the manner to measure the temperature of each SFP from reactor 1 to 3 when circulative cooling system is troubled.

Only SFP 4 can be reached by human worker so a temporary heating gauge is attached.

According to Tepco, they measure temperature where water comes from skimmer surge tank to primary cooling water pump at each reactor, not inside of the pool. They thus can not measure temperature when circulative cooling system stops. There is no plan to solve this problem.

                          • Unit 4

If Fukushima Unit 4 Falls, Hazardous Radioactive Cesium-137 Release Could be Eight Times Worse Than Chernobyl
                            Enews Park Forest Service
                            May 4, 2012

Beyond Nuclear today joined with concerned Japanese citizen groups and US Senator, Ron Wyden (D-OR), urging that swift international action be taken to prevent a catastrophic high-level radioactive waste fire at the precarious Unit 4 reactor building at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in Japan.

Unit 4 is leaning and could topple if hit with another earthquake or tsunami, resulting in a deadly high-level radioactive waste fire. The ability for the unit to withstand another seismic event is rated at zero.

Today, a coalition of concerned Japanese citizens is urging United Nations Secretary General Ban-Ki Moon and Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda, to properly inform the Japanese people of the perilous situation at Fukushima Daiichi, and to work together to prevent what would be an irreversible disaster that would release huge amounts of lethal radiation, dwarfing the scale of the original disaster.

Since the nuclear catastrophe began in March 2011, Beyond Nuclear has called attention to the ongoing risks of the damaged Fukushima Daiichi high-level radioactive waste storage pools. A similar danger persists at the 23 identical GE Mark I boiling water reactors still operating in the US.

If the cooling water supply is lost to the high-level radioactive waste storage pool in Unit 4, it could be just a matter of hours before the irradiated nuclear fuel is on fire, warned Kevin Kamps, radioactive waste specialist at Beyond Nuclear. A fire in the Unit 4 high-level radioactive waste storage pool could release up to eight times more hazardous cesium-137 than the Chernobyl reactor explosion. That in turn would mean the site would have to be evacuated, risking the potential for all seven high-level radioactive waste storage pools at the site to ignite. If that happened, Fukushima Daiichi would release 85 times the levels of cesium released by Chernobyl, potentially forcing an evacuation, and permanent condemnation, of hundreds to thousands of square miles, Kamps added.

Cesium-137 fallout from the Fukushima nuclear catastrophe has already been measured by the US Geological Survey across the US, although the agency has downplayed the risks, despite the position long held by the National Academy of Sciences that there is no safe dose of radiation.

US Senator Ron Wyden (D-OR) visited the stricken Fukushima site several weeks ago and was particularly alarmed by the slow response of Fukushima Daiichi utility owner, Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), which has a several year-long plan to secure Unit 4 and its fuel pool, and urged swifter action.

Loss of containment in any of these pools, especially the pool at Unit 4, which has the highest inventory of hottest fuel, could result in an even greater release of radiation than the initial incident, Wyden said.

The letter to UN Secretary General Ban-Ki Moon and Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda, initiated by Japanese environmental groups Green Action Japan and Shut Tomari, demands that Japan ask for international support to avert disaster. The groups are urging organizations around the world to sign on.

Given the fact that collapse of this pool could potentially lead to catastrophic consequences with worldwide implications, what the Japanese government should be doing as a responsible member of the international community is to avoid any further disaster by mobilizing all the wisdom and the means available in order to stabilize this pool, the letter states.

It is clearly evident that the Fukushima Daiichi Unit 4 spent nuclear fuel pool is no longer a Japanese issue but an international issue with potentially serious consequences, the letter continues. Therefore, it is imperative for the Japanese government and the international community to work together on this crisis before it becomes too late. We are appealing to the United Nations to help Japan and the planet in order to prevent the irreversible consequences of a catastrophe that could affect generations to come. Specifically, the Japanese people are asking that the UN organize a Nuclear Security Summit to take up the crucial problem of the Fukushima Daiichi Unit 4 spent nuclear fuel pool. In addition, the UN should establish an independent assessment team on Fukushima Daiichi Unit 4 and coordinate international assistance in order to stabilize the units spent nuclear fuel pool and prevent radiological consequences with potentially catastrophic consequences.

Organizations around the world are urged to sign on to the letter by emailing their support to info@greenaction-japan.org. The full text of the letter plus endorsements can be read at: Urgent Request to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon | Fukushima Update

Nuclear Expert: Everybody is now paying attention to Unit 4 because we have four years to go before fuel removed If water lost, a beacon of radiation will bathe site in sky shine from gamma rays..

                              • This is one small blessing.

Note that it does not seem to have interrupted the electrical service closing all these plants down, admitted that the other conventional plants may well be stretched but it clearly shows that in reality there is no need for nuclear power. I am confident that more conventional CHP plants and alternative power sources, which by the way all cost less to build and run than nuclear, could easily replace this extra capacity.
