    It took them 2 months...

    - [... TEPCO] now acknowledges that a fuel meltdown occurred at three of the plants six reactors in the early hours of the crisis, something experts had been suggesting for weeks. [...]

Tokyo Electric in the past week has released data that show that the fuel rods at the three most damaged reactors started to melt down rapidly after the site was jolted by a quake at 2:46 p.m. on March 11 [...]

[A]n uncontrolled meltdown had begun, as fuel started to slump to the bottom of the reactor pressure vessel. [...]

The company says meltdown also happened at Reactors No. 2 and 3. [...]

And they're working on 9 month plan to stabilize situation. Wonder if they did include laws of physics and "collateral damage" in their scenario. I have uneasy feeling that current situation will only get worst. I hope I'm wrong.

        Sad reality

" A huge outcry is erupting in Fukushima over what parents say is a blatant government failure to protect their children from dangerous levels of radiation. [...]

I dont believe the government, said Kanako Nishikata, 33, a mother of two elementary school children here. The air here is dirty. The soil is dirty. They are leaving Fukushima to suffer and perish. [...]

They know its impossible to evacuate such a big city [Fukushima City, home to nearly 300,000 people], said Seiichi Nakate, a social worker who rallied local parents to found the Fukushima Network for Saving Children from Radiation. But at least they should help evacuate the children, or do more to bring down the radiation.[...]

New leak feared at stricken Japan nuclear plant, Reuters by Kiyoshi Takenaka and Yoko Nishikawa, May 26, 2011
        :

"Radioactive water appears to be leaking from a waste disposal building at Japans Fukushima nuclear complex, operator Tokyo Electric Power said on Thursday, in a new setback to the battle to contain radiation from the crippled power plant". [...]

Marine life soaking up radiation along Fukushima coast, Greenpeace by Greg McNevin, May 26, 2011:

[... T]he situation in the ocean along the Fukushima coast is worse than we originally thought.

The new data shows that some seaweed contamination levels are not only 50 times higher than safety limits far higher than our initial measurements showed but also that the contamination is spreading over a wide area, and accumulating in sea life, rather than simply dispersing like the Japanese authorities originally claimed would happen.

Other samples showed lower than expected concentrations of caesium, but much higher levels of iodine than expected, which raises serious concerns that contaminated water is continually leaking from the nuclear plant".

          If this isn't enough...

Super typhoon churns through Pacific, threatens Okinawa, CNN, May 26, 2011:

          - "Super Typhoon Songda ripped across the western Pacific on Thursday, dropping heavy rain on the Philippines and threatening Okinawa and the Japanese main islands with rain and damaging winds into the weekend.

Songda was a Category 5 storm late Thursday, with maximum sustained winds of 161 mph and gusts of 195 mph, according to the Joint Typhoon Warning Center in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The storm was producing wave heights of 38 feet in the Pacific, forecasters said." [...]

I stayed out of the rain, not much else I can do other than take kelp tablets manufactured before the disaster. My home made radiation monitoring device is still showing higher readings than before the contamination hit, but it is influenced by the high humidity so it is impossible to say how much the levels are up.

Aloe Vera will protect your skin. Chlorella and Spirulina as well as buckwheat absorb quite a bit. Garlic, Ginko Bilboa, Ginseng in your diet will also help.

Fukushima Faces Massive Radioactive Water Problem, Bloomberg by Stuart Biggs and Yuriy Humber, May 26, 2011:

"Academics warn [TEPCO] has failed to disclose the scale of radiation leaks" [...]

-Tepco knows more than theyve said about the amount of radiation leaking from the plant, Jan van de Putte, a specialist in radiation safety trained at the Technical University of Delft in the Netherlands, said yesterday in Tokyo. What we need is a full disclosure, a full inventory of radiation released including the exact isotopes.

-"The government plans to release details on the radiation released at the appropriate time, said Goshi Hosono, an adviser to Prime Minister Naoto Kan [...]

                  Fukishima.

The meltdown core in reactor 1 has apparently burned through the floor of the containment vessel and lodged in the dry well underneath. Remember the "China syndrome" a film with Jane Fonda that depicted a run away reaction that had the potential to melt through the Earth and surface in China? The Fukisima reactions may stop when they get to the center of the Earth, and begin to overheat the Earth's core and molten mantel in what I'm now terming the "Altair IV syndrome" comparable to the catastrophic fate of the Krell planet in "Forbidden Planet", a fifty's Si-Fi flick with Walter Pidgeon and Anne Francis.

We may need to muster an international effort to tunnel under the reactors to pour large concrete pads to prevent the melt through into the Earth's crust. The reactors will also need containment domes like the Chernoybl sarcophagus.

                    Nuclear Typhoon possibility?

Typhoon Songda strengthens; may hit Fukushima nuclear station, Bloomberg News, May 27, 2011:

-"Typhoon Songda strengthened to a supertyphoon after battering the Philippines and headed for Japan on a track that may pass over the crippled Fukushima nuclear plant by May 30, a U.S. monitoring center said.

Songdas winds increased to 150 miles per hour, the U.S. Navy Joint Typhoon Warning Center said on its website. [...]

The centers forecast graphic includes a possible path over Fukushima Dai-Ichi plant" [...]

We are still considering typhoon measures and cant announce detailed plans yet, Takeo Iwamoto, a spokesman at Tokyo Electric Power Co., said by phone when asked about the storm". [...]

And - New fire at Japanese nuclear plant contained, AFP, May 26, 2011:

-"A fire broke out on Friday at a nuclear power station near Japans stricken Fukushima Daiichi, the plant at the centre of the worlds worst atomic crisis since Chernobyl, its operator said".

                    According to TEPCO:

                    * The fire started in the basement of an annex to Reactor No. 1
                    * The fire broke out on a power distribution board for lights
                    * There are no reports on injuries or any leakage of radiation because of the fire
                    * After extinguishing the fire, they are investigating how it started.

                                on sarcastic note...

By Alyangka Francheska | June 3, 2011 10:19 AM EST

Japan's already reeling economy could be crushed by over-reaction to the Fukushima disaster, warns radiation scientist T.D. Luckey in the summer 2011 issue of the Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons.

                                - "Japan should not repeat the mistake that Russia made in the tremendous unwarranted expense of its reaction to Chernobyl. As Mikhail Gorbachev understood too late, "The nuclear meltdown at Chernobyl 20 years ago...was perhaps the real cause of the collapse of the Soviet Union five years later."

Japan should not act on the false presumption, shared by most of the world's press, that all radiation is harmful, Luckey states. Although high-dose radiation is clearly lethal, and excess doses (>200 mSv over an extremely short time, as from the atomic bomb blasts) can induce cancer, thousands of scientific papers show actual benefits from low doses, including the prevention of cancer and birth defects."

                                - "We live with chronic radiation deficiency," Luckey believes. The worldwide background dose of about 3 mSv per year is much less than the optimum dose of around 100 mSv per year; this is 100 times lower than the dose that divides healthful from harmful effects of excess radiation.

Chronic exposure of around 50 mSv per year for two decades in accidentally contaminated apartments in Taiwan was associated with only 3.5 cancer deaths per 1,000, compared with the 116 per 1,000 "normally" expected.

Cancer mortality in 7,430 survivors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki who received between 10 and 19 mSv was significantly lower than that of controls.

At Fukushima there have been no cases of radiation sickness, and no deaths from radiation exposure. The feared cancer deaths are all theoretical ones, predicted for years in the future. Based on past experience, there will probably be fewer cancer deaths than "normal," Luckey concludes.

Japan should not imitate Russia in squandering billions of dollars to "protect" people from radiation that is actually beneficial. It should instead base its response on sound scientific data rather than unjustified fear."
