Radiation in No. 3 reactor too high for work

Radiation in No. 3 reactor too high for work, NHK, June 10, 2011:

    - "The operator of the damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant says radiation levels in one of the reactor buildings remain too high for workers to do their jobs. [...]

The workers withdrew after measuring radiation of 100 millisieverts per hour near the reactors containment vessel.

TEPCO says it intended to limit the workers exposure to below 5 millisieverts per hour. But as all 9 received higher doses, it has suspended work while considering a course of action".

Govt tells company to conceal info...

Govt tells company to conceal info on radioactive tea leaves because of public anxiety

Shizuoka tells tea retailer to conceal radiation info, Kyodo, June 10, 2011:

      - "Shizuoka Prefecture told a Tokyo-based mail order company not to say anything on its website about excessive radioactive material being found in tea from the prefecture, the retailer said Friday.

After Radishbo-ya Co. made an inquiry to the Shizuoka Prefectural Government about the matter Monday, a prefectural official told the company not to disclose the finding due to fears the message would cause unwarranted harm to Shizuoka tea growers, adding that the prefecture would confirm the finding on its own, according to the retailer. [...]

The official (who talked with Radishbo-ya) apparently feared that any warning issued through its website could fan public anxiety, a prefectural official said" [...]

Former adviser says government worsened radiation exposure, DPA, June 11, 2011:

          - A former adviser to Prime Minister Naoto Kan accused the government of aggravating the radiation exposure of local residents during the nuclear crisis, news reports said Saturday.

Toshiso Kosako, professor of radiation safety at the University of Tokyos graduate school [...] said the government had delayed the release of forecasts on the spread of radiation compiled by the Nuclear Safety Technology Centers computer system, Kyodo said, citing the April 27 report.

He urged the government to conduct an epidemiological study in Fukushima and neighboring prefectures as thyroid cancer was expected to develop among children. [...]

Unthinkable nuclear woes may yet become normal in Japan, Irish Times, June 11, 2011:

-"Not much is worse than children having radiation meters strapped to their chests" [...]

          - "8,000 schoolchildren in Date City, 60km from the ruined Fukushima nuclear power plant, are to be given dosimeters to measure radiation. Thousands more children in day-care centres, kindergartens and primary schools in towns and villages around the area are likely to follow suit.

Meanwhile, hundreds of kilometres southwest, officials in Shizuoka Prefecture, home to the nations tea-growing industry, have reportedly asked Tokyo retailers to refrain from informing consumers that above-normal levels of radiation have been detected on tea leaves. The prefecture felt that issuing the warning could fan public anxiety, said Kyodo News.

Its hard to imagine something much more frightening than five-year-olds marching off to irradiated school playgrounds in the morning with Geiger counters strapped to their chests." [...]

Young parents moving away from areas near damaged Fukushima plant, Mainichi Japan, June 11, 2011:

          - "Young parents are moving away from towns near the Fukushima No. 1 Nuclear Power Plant as areas of high radiation continue to be discovered, raising fears over the effects on young children. [...]

Around 50 kilometers northwest of the power plant is Soma citys Tamano district [...]

I cant stop thinking about the power plant. I cant smile or laugh with all my heart, says Aki Ohashi, 30, tearfully as she cares for her children in her home here. She says that at a health checkup she was strongly recommended to have medical and psychiatric therapy. [...]

A high-ranking Soma government official explained the slowness of the citys response to evacuating citizens from the Ishida district, saying, Since the national and prefectural governments had not designated the district for evacuation, we couldnt actively encourage the residents to leave".

Many challenges at Fukushima Daiichi nuke plant, NHK, June 11, 2011:

              - "Three months after the breakdown at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, there is still a huge number of obstacles to getting the plant under control. [...]

[H]ighly radioactive water continues to accumulate [...] Decontaminating the water is vital for stabilizing the reactors and preventing more radioactive leakage from the plant.

On Friday, TEPCO postponed a test run of a water decontamination system because of a malfunction. [...]

TEPCO spokesman Junichi Matsumoto told a press conference on Friday that the company will do its utmost to make progress in the difficult work to get the plant under control".

[...] Almost two months later, on June 5, the governments nuclear disaster response headquarters held a conference for residents. They stressed that by international standards, in times of nuclear disaster 20 millisieverts per year is at the bottom of a range (20 to 100 millisieverts per year) of radiation exposure it is recommended to try to limit residents to. However, residents were not satisfied with this explanation. [...]

This is concerning the effects of the Fukushima residents, on the prefectural citizens. Its headed by a Dr. Shunichi Yama****a, whos at the Atomic Bomb Research Institute. Hes the radiological health safety risk management adviser for the prefecture. Hes widely shown on national TV. He speaks widely in the prefecture, always saying theres absolutely no concern with the levels of radiation in Fukushima. He says that mothers, even mothers exposed to 100 millisieverts, pregnant mothers, will not have any effect, health effect. Remember the number 100. Compared to that, the Soviet Union required a mandatory evacuation during Chernobyl at five millisieverts. This doctor is quoted as saying, The effects of radiation do not come to people that are happy and laughing. They come to people that are weak-spirited, that brood and fret. This is a direct quote. And hes heading the study. And so, the citizens in Fukushima are very concerned. [...]

Radioactive strontium detected at Fukushima plantTokyo Electric Power Company has detected high levels of radioactive strontium in soil inside the compound of the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. Strontium can cause cancer and like calcium it tends to collect in bones once humans inhale it.

Up to 570 becquerels of strontium 90 per kilogram of dry soil were detected in samples from 3 locations. They were taken on April 18, about 500 meters from the Number 1 and 2 reactors at soil depths of up to 5 centimeters. The amount detected is about 130 times higher than a previous high, level that was measured in Fukushima Prefecture before the accident at the nuclear plant.

TEPCO also said it found 4,400 becquerels of radioactive strontium 89 per kilogram of dry soil taken from the same location.

                            From Wikipedia:

Together with cesium isotopes 134Cs, 137Cs, and iodine isotope 131I it was among the most important isotopes regarding health impacts after the Chernobyl disaster.

Strontium-90 is a bone seeker that exhibits biochemical behavior similar to calcium, the next lighter Group 2 element. After entering the organism, most often by ingestion with contaminated food or water, about 7080% of the dose gets excreted. Virtually all remaining strontium-90 is deposited in bones and bone marrow, with the remaining 1% remaining in blood and soft tissues. Its presence in bones can cause bone cancer, cancer of nearby tissues, and leukemia. Exposure to 90Sr can be tested by a bio assay, most commonly by urinalysis.

Basically, Your body mistakes it for calcium and takes it up and puts it in your bones, causing blood cancer and bone cancer. Same way as radioactive iodine is mistaken for beneficial iodine and destroys thyroid gland.
