You often hear about the enormous drain on electricity that is caused by keeping your air conditioning too high, or doing laundry during peak energy hours, or even little things like leaving the light on when you leave the room, but the one thing that you don’t hear that much about is how much power a regular TV top cable box uses.

Much too true. The one I used to have wasn't any cooler when powered off even. It still created enough heat that the cat preferred sleeping on it to a sunbeam. Best bet, if not in use, pull the plug.
Even better, get a power strip and put the TV on it too. If its a CRT, thats another huge saving, since many of them use standby power to keep the tube read to turn on faster.
