  • Common Purslane is food

    • Purslane is free, just go out and find some.
    • Purslane is a very hardy succulent plant and this make it one of the easiest for anyone to grow.
    • Purslane contains more omega-3 fatty acids (alpha-linolenic acid in particular)
    • 100 grams of fresh purslane leaves (about 1 cup) contain 300 to 400 mg of alpha-linolenic acid
than any other leafy vegetable plant.
    • Purslane is found around the world.
    • Purslane is grown as food throughout much of Europe, Asia and Mexico.
    • About 40 varieties of Purslane are currently cultivated.
    • Common Purslane (Portulaca oleracea) is in the Top 100 plants in the United States.
See the Range/Distribution Map and Images
    • Has two types of betalain alkaloid pigments, the reddish betacyanins (visible in the coloration of the stems) and the yellow betaxanthins (noticeable in the flowers and in the slight yellowish cast of the leaves, flowers are only open during the morning hours) Both of these pigment types are potent antioxidants and have been found to have antimutagenic properties.
    • ??? No mention of the color PURPLE as an alkaloid pigment (see images, above link)!!!! Purple is a created by Red and Blue , not Red and Yellow??
    • A single plant during a season is estimated to create 52,000 seeds.
Can be grown indoors year round.
    • Wild Purslane (non-commerial) tastes better.
    • Purslane is loaded with nutrients.
    • One cup of raw Purslane has only 7 calories.

i have found some wildly different quantities
    of nutrients quoted.
One web page states: single one-cup serving contains
all the vitamin E you need in a day and
another web page states: !ZERO! vitamin E.

It's very sad that nutrient information is not easier to confirm or deny.
