    Some other useful articles

I've done quite a bit of research in this area, Ash.

Some while ago I realised intuitively that there was a link between the high incidence of Alzheimers & the high rate of statin drugs / low fat diets prescribed for high cholesterol. So I went online to research more & found the following articles very useful.

One can't really address the issues of Alzheimer's without also researching cholesterol as there are very real crossovers which became more apparent to me when I started looking.

Ray Peat has several very good articles:

Excellent case study by Dr Mary Newport whose husband developed Alzheimer's which regressed when she added coconut oil to his diet.

And here we go again! Doctors not trained in nutrition, ridiculous

The good news about this cross-cultural spice is that elderly villagers in India, who eat turmeric in their daily curries, have the world's lowest rate of Alzheimer's disease. That does not appear to be a coincidence. In a study at the University of California at Los Angeles, scientists fed curcumin, an active compound in turmeric tea, to rats prone to accumulate beta-amyloid plaque in their brains - the abnormality associated with Alzheimer's disease in humans. Curcumin blocked the plaque's accumulation. It also appeared to reduce inflammation related to Alzheimer's disease in neural tissue. The rats fed curcumin also performed better on memory tests than rats on normal diets.

I have a news paper cutting that talked about the use of B vitamin tablets being given to Alzeheimer’s patients, but the pill they were looking to give were quite expensive.

In suthern europe you find the large consumption of Lupin beans.

The following is the Abstract from a paper I found (see: Some chemical properties of white lupin seeds (Lupinus albus L.) 10.1016/j.foodchem.2004.02.040 : Food Chemistry | ScienceDirect.com)

Lupin seeds (Lupinus albus L.), grown in Turkey, were investigated. Density, thousand grain weight, and hectolitre weight of seeds were 1.16 g/cm3, 411.4 g, and 68.12 kg/100 l, respectively. The results showed that lupin contained high amounts of protein (32.2%), fibre (16.2%), oil (5.95%), and sugar (5.82%). Oil of seeds was composed of 13.5% saturated, 55.4% monounsaturated, and 31.1% polyunsaturated fatty acids. Sucrose constituted 71% of total sugar content of seeds. Lupin seeds contained 3.9 mg/kg of thiamin, 2.3 mg/kg of riboflavin and 39 mg/kg of niacin. It can be concluded that lupin is an excellent food material with a high nutritional value.
There was a study in Australia, which should positive results with people consuming a bread containing 40% Lupin bean flour. The results were very surprising to those who conducted the trials. As I blive in Australia, the lupin beans is mostly used as animal feed.

But in most Mediterranean county’s including Portugal and Brazil, it's the snacks you have with beer, instead of other nuts.

              coconut oil

Ash, that video is sure making the rounds - just sent to me couple days ago.

Good stuff! I used to sell the organic coconut oil in my store but never really used it myself. I'm surprised at the big heaping servings they're using.
