    Which module would be the most helpful for my persistent yearly problems with SAD?

    Every year I get the winter blues. It sets in around late-November, and reaches a peak in February before dissipating in March with the advent of Spring. During this time, all I want to do is hole up at home and cut off contact with the outside world, and I become very quiet and uncommunicative. It's not very nice for me, or the people around me!

    Although I appreciate the cycle of the seasons and I understand about the benefits of hibernation, I'd rather not spend my whole winter feeling gloomy and depressed.

    Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Rin

    I don't know which module to suggest, but you might want to check into the value of supplementing Vitamin D3. If you spend a lot of time in the sun during the warmer months, but can't during the winter months, you could be suffering from a deficiency of Vitamin D. You may find that supplementing with Vitamin D3 (the best form - cholecalciferol) in amounts considerably higher than the RDA provides relief from SAD.

      Serotonin if you can

      Serotonin is element that give the body a lift.

      You may need a prescription to get it but it can help with SAD

        modules for SAD

        Hi Rin,

        The Mood Elevator module

        would be helpful, but with SAD,
        it is really more full spectrum light that
        is needed.

        However, the Healthy Tan module

        may be helpful. It allows a certain amount
        of light to do more. The body becomes
        more photosensitive, so if there is less light,
        it can do more work. You may not necessarily
        get a tanning effect on the skin from that
        little bit of light, but you may notice you
        feel better.

        When light is received by the eyes and
        even the skin...mostly the eyes, these signals
        are sent to the hypothalamus gland and like
        a traffic director, it routes impulses to the
        pineal and pituitary gland.

        The less signals the pineal receives, the
        more melatonin it produces and makes you
        sleepy.

        The more signals the pineal receives, the
        less is produced and the more you're awake.

        Visa versa with the pituitary glad, which
        produces serotonin, is produced in good
        quantity with enough light signals.

        I would have to ask if anyone has had
        instructions in their Platinum Packages for
        SAD. If so, that may be a good add-on for
        the mood elevator module or might be a good
        module on its own.

          Serotonin is not available by prescription. Drug companies do make serotonin wannabe's, but they do NOT function like Serotonin and have potential for serious negative side-effects.

          It is much better to have your own body produce sufficient serotonin, AT THE CORRECT TIMES OF THE DAY. Only YOUR BODY can produce serotonin for YOU.

              (Several months later) Thank you very much everybody for your kind and thoughtful responses.

              Out of sheer idle curiosity, I decided not to take any special action this year. I wanted to see if being on PATHS would help me to deal with this SAD issue.

              Guess what? It's nearly mid-February - usually the worst time for me, in terms of cold season depression - and there is nary a hint of melancholy. On the contrary, I feel downright perky!

              All of the previous posters have mentioned that I need to be out in the sunlight more often. Well, thanks to PATHS I have been getting out and about in the sun - even during this cold season - for at least two hours a day, and usually more.

              This year is the first time in my adult life that I haven't been overwhelmed with the winter blues. I have never felt this happy in my life!

                  That's a good question. I would have to say, all of the modules have helped! The synergistic effects have been amazing. But if I have to narrow it down, I would say that the modules that specifically address fitness issues (such Ultimate Body and Take It Off) have been the most influential because they prompted me to spend far more time outdoors. I now walk a minimum of five miles a day, and sometimes more, rain or shine. I've definitely gotten a lot more sunshine this winter, as a result. I feel really great!
