  • New Study: Meditation Cures Depression

According to the National Institutes of Health, more than 20 million people in the U.S. have persistent depression that can interfere with everyday life, impact health and even lead to suicide.

Now a study has shown that treatment based on Meditation is an effective alternative to prescription drugs, even for people suffering from serious, long-term depression.

The study found that Meditation was as good or better as treatment with anti-depressants like Prozac in preventing a relapse of serious depression -- and the non-drug therapy was more effective in enhancing quality of life.

Know someone who is depressed? Let them know about the Quantum Meditation Theater!

The proof is in the pudding, as they say, so don't let them fall victim to the idea that only mainstream medications can help them!

Depression, in varying degrees, effects millions of people around the world. I'm one of them. I think it's important to note, this study indicates mediation can help prevent a relapse of serious depression, there's no claim that meditation alone will resolve the contributing factors of a person's depression.

What if your depression is linked to your feelings about an an incurable disease suffered by you or your partner? Or your social situation? Or an event or trauma in your past? Well, I admit, in the third example, past trauma, attitudinal adjustment, a shift of perspective, what ever you want to call it, is quite possible with meditation. But if your depression stems from real and ongoing stressors, if you're not just "a bit down," but suffer from full blown meloncholia and apathy, a negative self image supported by other's apparent perceptions and treatment of you, well, don't sign up for a course in hope it'll be a magic bullet.

Liberation from depression usually means significant changes, either in the conditions of the patient's life so that they can better cope with the issues at the source of the depression or in altering the chemistry of the patient's mind (by drugs or other less well accepted modalities,)

25 years of chronic, persistent depression here (I'm 38), self managed, no meds, no store brought miracle cures, not even any therapy beyond what I've been led to self administer through my own research and experience - and I'm still sucking in air. Meditation helps, but only in preventing the downward spiral of the negative monolouges that play in the imagination. It doesn't change the thing in my life that cause the depression or even give me a great deal of faith or hope... I've found only I can do that.

I recognise and appreciate people's right to make a living, to act with compassion and good intentions, but I think it's a little callous when the only help someone is prepared to offer a stranger comes with a pricetag. That's just me, my brain may not be working quite right, don't take what i say too seriously

That said though, If you honestly believe paths provides a solution to depression, if you seriously think it might help someone, a little philanthropy and/or charity may be a good way to show it, perhaps by making modules accessable to a local clinical psychologist to trial with their most profoundly depressed patients.
