  • Forest diversity from Canada to the sub-tropics influenced by family proximity

How species diversity is maintained is a fundamental question in biology. In a new study, a team of Indiana University biologists has shown for the first time that diversity is influenced on a spatial scale of unparalleled scope, in part, by how well tree seedlings survive under their own parents.

Seeing the forest through the trees

Imagine you are walking through a forest. All around you are trees of different species, age, size and height. It looks pretty random, right? Wrong.

In research funded by the National Science Foundation, Brian Enquist of the department of ecology and evolutionary biology at the University of Arizona and his team have discovered a secret in the trees: Hidden among and within the architecture of the branches are fundamental rules that link the size, shape, age and in fact everything about a single tree to all the trees in a forest.
This rule or code reoccurs as the tree grows, creating a fractal – a repeating pattern – like a spiral of daughter branches emanating from the mother branch or tree trunk.

Study shows religion is a potent force for cooperation, conflict

Across history and cultures, religion increases trust within groups but also may increase conflict with other groups, according to an article in a special issue of Science.

    • 45 A ship on an ocean, traveling the sea and the waves, seeks to
bring to safety the fruits and the treasures that it carries. Each of you is
a ship. If you lose your cargo your journey will be for naught. In each
of you is a dream. That dream must reach the shore. Treasure your
dreams, and do not fear the waves of the ocean

      Hold On Tight lyrics
Hold on tight to your dream,
Hold on tight to your dream,
When you see your ship go sailing,
When you feel your heart is breaking,
Hold on tight to your dream,
It's a long time to be gone,
Time just rolls on and on,
When you need a shoulder to cry on,
When you get so sick of trying,
Just hold on tight to your dream.
      Chorus
When you get so down that you can't get up,
And you want so much but you're all out of luck,
When you're so downhearted and misunderstood,
Just over and over and over you could.
      Accroches-toi a ton reve,
      Accroches-toi a ton reve,
Quand tu vois ton bateau partir,
Quand tu sents-ton coeur se briser,
      Accroches-toi a ton reve.
      Chorus
Hold on tight to your dream,
Hold on tight to your dream,
When you see the shadows falling,
When you hear that cold wind calling,
Hold on tight to your dream.

Heavy Metal (Takin' A Ride) lyrics

Start it on up hey let's cruise a while
      Leave Your troubles far behind
You can hedge your bet on a clean corvette
To get you there right on time
Now if you're ready to dive into overdrive
Baby the green lights are on
It's like you're runnin away on some high octane
Every time she reaches for the goal

Won't you take a ride, ride, ride, ride
      On heavy metal
It's the only way that you can travel
      Down that road
      Satisfied, 'fied, 'fied, 'fied
      On heavy metal
      Baby won't you ride
      Ride it until it explodes
      Heavy Metal

My oh my how this lady can fly
Once she starts rollin' beneath you
You know you just can't lose the way she moves
You wait for her to finally release you
It's not a big surprise to feel your temperature rise
You've gotta touch of redline fever
'Cause there is just one cure that they know for sure
You just become a heavy metal believer

Won't you take a ride, ride, ride, ride
      On heavy metal
It's the only way that you can travel
      Down that road
      Satisfied, 'fied, 'fied, 'fied

        • Today is the 964th BirthDay of Omar Khayyam did not know it ..... until Mr Google told me : here is a very nice synchronicity

          964 = 9 + 1 = HM 1

Omar KhayyΓ‘m - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Omar Khayyαm (1048–1131; Persian: ‏عمر خیام‎) was a Persian polymath: philosopher, mathematician, astronomer and poet. He also wrote treatises on mechanics, geography, mineralogy, music, climatology and Islamic theology.[3]

Born in Nishapur, at a young age he moved to Samarkand and obtained his education there, afterwards he moved to Bukhara and became established as one of the major mathematicians and astronomers of the medieval period. He is the author of one of the most important treatises on algebra written before modern times, the Treatise on Demonstration of Problems of Algebra, which includes a geometric method for solving cubic equations by intersecting a hyperbola with a circle.[4] He contributed to a calendar reform.

His significance as a philosopher and teacher, and his few remaining philosophical works, have not received the same attention as his scientific and poetic writings. Al-Zamakhshari referred to him as “the philosopher of the world”. Many sources have testified that he taught for decades the philosophy of Avicenna in Nishapur where Khayyαm was born and buried and where his mausoleum today remains a masterpiece of Iranian architecture visited by many people every year.[5]

Outside Iran and Persian speaking countries, Khayyαm has had an impact on literature and societies through the translation of his works and popularization by other scholars. The greatest such impact was in English-speaking countries; the English scholar Thomas Hyde (1636–1703) was the first non-Persian to study him. The most influential of all was Edward FitzGerald (1809–83),[6] who made Khayyαm the most famous poet of the East in the West through his celebrated translation and adaptations of Khayyαm's rather small number of quatrains (Persian: رباعیات‎ rubāʿiyāt) in the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam.

Omar Khayyαm died in 1131 and is buried in the Khayyam Garden at the mausoleum of Imamzadeh Mahruq in Nishapur. In 1963 the mausoleum of Omar Khayyam was constructed on the site by Hooshang Seyhoun.

An enormous sunspot unleashed a powerful solar flare late Wednesday (May 16), triggering a radiation storm intense enough to interfere with some satellites orbiting Earth, space weather experts said.

The flare erupted from monster sunspot complex AR 1476, which stretches about 60,000 miles (100,000 kilometers) from end to end, at 9:47 p.m. EDT Wednesday (0147 GMT Thursday). The flare spawned a class S2 solar radiation storm around our planet, according to the Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC), a branch of the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Adminstration.

Our universe may exist inside a black hole. This may sound strange, but it could actually be the best explanation of how the universe began, and what we observe today. It's a theory that has been explored over the past few decades by a small group of physicists including myself.

"The Logical Song" (Supertramp) written and composed by Roger Hodgson - YouTube

              The Logical Song lyrics
              Songwriters: Davies, R; Hodgson, R;

              When I was young
It seemed that life was so wonderful
A miracle, oh it was beautiful, magical
And all the birds in the trees
Well they'd be singing so happily
              Joyfully, playfully watching me

But then they send me away
To teach me how to be sensible
              Logical, responsible, practical
And then they showed me a world
Where I could be so dependable
              Clinical, intellectual, cynical

There are times when all the world's asleep
The questions run too deep for such a simple man
Won't you please, please tell me what we've learned?
I know it sounds absurd but please tell me who I am

I say, "Now what would you say for they calling you a radical
              Liberal, fanatical, criminal?"
Won't you sign up your name? We'd like to feel you're
              Acceptable, respectable, presentable, a vegetable
              Oh, ch-ch-check it out yeah

At night when all the world's asleep
The questions run so deep for such a simple man
Won't you please, please tell me what we've learned?
I know it sounds absurd but please tell me who I am
Who I am, who I am, who I am

              'Coz I'm feeling so illogical
              D-d-digital
              Oh, oh, oh, oh
              Unbelievable

              Child Of Vision lyrics
              Songwriters: Davies, Richard; Hodgson, Roger;

Who do you think you're foolin'?
              You say you're having fun
              But you're busy going nowhere
              Just lying in the sun

You tried to be a hero
              Commit the perfect crime
But the dollar got you dancing
And you're running out of time

              You're messin' up the water
              You rolling in the wine
              Got poison in your body
              Got poison in your mind

And you gave me coca cola
              You said it tasted good
              Then you watch the television
And to tell that you should go

How can you live in this way?
(What do you think it's so strange)
You must have something to say
(You tell me why should I change)
We have no reason to fight
'Cos we both know that we're right

Child of vision, won't you listen?
              Find yourself a new ambition

              I've heard it all before
              You're saying nothing new
              I thought I saw a rainbow
But I guess it wasn't true

              You cannot make me listen
And I cannot make you hear
So you find your way to heaven
And I'll meet you when you're there

How can you live in this way?
(What do you think it's so strange)
You must have something to say
(You tell me why should I change)
We have no reason to fight
'Cos we both know that we're right

(Phys.org) -- An international team of researchers has discovered how adding trace amounts of water can tremendously speed up chemical reactions—such as hydrogenation and hydrogenolysis—in which hydrogen is one of the reactants, or starting materials.

Through an interaction with hydrogen atoms (green), a water molecule (magenta and blue) moves rapidly across a metal oxide surface. This atomic-scale speed leads to more efficient chemical reactions.

                Text

This is the full text of the 75 quatrains published in FitzGerald's first edition of the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam. .

                The Rubaiyat

                of Omar Khayyam

                3

And, as the Cock crew, those who stood before

The Tavern shouted -'' Open then the Door!

You know how little while we have to stay,

And, once departed, may return no more."

                6

And David's Lips are lockt ; but in divine

High piping Pehlevi, with " Wine ! Wine ! Wine!

Red Wine ! " - the Nightingale cries to the Rose

That yellow Cheek of her's to incarnadine.

                9

But come with old Khayyam, and leave the Lot

                Of Kaikobad and Kaikhosru forgot:

Let Rustum lay about him as he will,

Or Hatim Tai cry Supper - heed them not.

                12

"How sweet is mortal Sovranty ! " - think some:

Others - "How blest the Paradise to come ! "

                Ah, take the Cash in hand and waive the Rest;

Oh, the brave Music of a distant Drum!

                15

And those who husbanded the Golden Grain,

And those who flung it to the Winds like Rain,

Alike to no such aureate Earth are turn'd

As, buried once, Men want dug up again.

                18

I sometimes think that never blows so red

                The Rose as where sonic buried Caesar bled;

That every Hyacinth the Garden wears

Dropt in its Lap from some once lovely Head.

                21

Lo! some we loved, the loveliest and best

That Time and Fate of all their Vintage prest,

Have drunk their Cup a Round or two before,

And one by one crept silently to Rest.

                24

Alike for those who for TO-DAY prepare,

And those that after a TO-MORROW stare,

A Muezzin from the Tower of Darkness cries

"Fools ! your Reward is neither Here nor There!'

                27

Myself when young did eagerly frequent

Doctor and Saint, and heard great Argument

About it and about: but evermore

Came out by the same Door as in I went.

                30

What, without asking, hither hurried whence?

And, without asking, whither hurried hence !

Another and another Cup to drown

The Memory of this Impertinence !

                33

Then to the rolling Heav'n itself I cried,

Asking, " What Lamp had Destiny to guide

Her little Children stumbling in the Dark?"

                And - "A blind Understanding!" Heav'n replied.

                36

For in the Market-place, one Dusk of Day,

I watch'd the Potter thumping his wet Clay:

And with its all obliterated Tongue

It murmur'd - "Gently, Brother, gently, pray!"

How long, how long, in infinite Pursuit

Of This and That endeavour and dispute?

Better be merry with the fruitful Grape

Than sadden after none, or bitter, Fruit.

                  42

And lately, by the Tavern Door agape,

Came stealing through the Dusk an Angel Shape

Bearing a Vessel on his Shoulder; and

He bid me taste of it; and 'twas - the Grape!.

                  45

But leave the Wise to wrangle, and with me

The Quarrel of the Universe let be:

And, in some corner of the Hubbub coucht,

Make Game of that which makes as much of Thee.

                  48

While the Rose blows along the River Brink,

With old Khayyam the Ruby Vintage drink:

And when the Angel with his darker Draught

Draws up to Thee - take that, and do not shrink.

Nor all thy Tears wash out a Word of it.

                  54

I tell Thee this - When, starting from the Goal,

Over the shoulders of the flaming Foal

Of Heav'n Parwin and Mushtara they flung,

What ! did the Hand then of the Potter shake ?"

                    66

So while the Vessels one by one were speaking,

One spied the little Crescent all were seeking:

And then they jogged each other, "Brother ! Brother !

                    Hark to the Porter's Shoulder-knot a-creaking !"

                    69

Indeed the Idols I have loved so long

                    Have done my Credit in Men's Eye much wrong;

Have drown'd my Honour in a shallow Cup,

And sold my Reputation for a Song.

                    72

Alas, that Spring should vanish with the Rose

                    That Youth's sweet-scented Manuscript should close !

The Nightingale that in the Branches sang,

Ah, whence, and whither flown again, who knows !

                    75

And when Thyself with shining Foot shall pass

Among the Guests Star-scatter'd on the Grass,

And in thy joyous Errand reach the Spot

Where I made one - turn down an empty Glass !

Southern Cross with lyrics - Crosby, Stills, and Nash - YouTube

Got out of town on a boat
                      Goin' to Southern islands.
                      Sailing a reach
                      Before a followin' sea.
She was makin' for the trades
                      On the outside,
                      And the downhill run
                      To Papeete.
Off the wind on this heading
                      Lie the Marquesas.
We got eighty feet of the waterline.
                      Nicely making way.
In a noisy bar in Avalon
                      I tried to call you.
But on a midnight watch I realized
                      Why twice you ran away.
                      Chorus
                      Think about how many times
                      I have fallen
                      Spirits are using me
                      larger voices callin'.

What heaven brought you and me
                      Cannot be forgotten.
I have been around the world,
                      Lookin' for that woman/girl,
                      Who knows love can endure.
                      And you know it will.
                      And you know it will.

When you see the Southern Cross
                      For the first time
                      You understand now
                      Why you came this way
'Cause the truth you might be runnin' from
                      Is so small.
But it's as big as the promise
The promise of a comin' day.

                      So I'm sailing for tomorrow
                      My dreams are a dyin'.
And my love is an anchor tied to you
                      Tied with a silver chain.
                      I have my ship
And all her flags are a flyin'
She is all that I have left
                      And music is her name.
                      Chorus
                      Think about how many times
                      I have fallen
                      Spirits are using me
                      larger voices callin'.
What heaven brought you and me
                      Cannot be forgotten.

I have been around the world,
                      Lookin' for that woma/girl,
                      Who knows love can endure.
                      And you know it will.
                      And you know it will.
So we cheated and we lied
                      And we tested
And we never failed to fail
It was the easiest thing to do.
                      You will survive being bested.

                      Somebody fine
                      Will come along
Make me forget about loving you.

                        If I leave here tomorrow
                        Would you still remember me?
For I must be traveling on, now
                        'Cause there's too many places
                        I've got to see

But, if I stayed here with you, girl
Things just couldn't be the same
'Cause I'm as free as a bird now
And this bird, you'll can not change
                        Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh

And the bird you cannot change
And this bird you cannot change
                        Lord knows, I can?t change
Bye, bye, baby it's been a sweet love

                        Yeah, yeah
Though this feeling I can't change
But please don't take it so badly
                        'Cause the Lord knows
                        I'm to blame

"The crowd neither wants nor seeks knowledge, and the leaders of the crowd, in their own interests, try to strengthen its fear and dislike of everything new and unknown. The slavery in which mankind lives is based upon this fear."

"George Ivanovitch Gurdjieff (1866?-1949) was born and educated in Russian Armenia. He spent years searching in Central Asia, North Africa, and other places for a hidden tradition whose traces he had encountered in youth. Durning this search he came into contact with certain esoteric schools. In the early 1900's he brought to Europe a teaching that he had developed from the results of this contact.

"Gurdjieff's basic teaching is that human life is lived in waking sleep; transcendence of the sleeping state requires a specific inner work, which is practiced in private quiet conditions, and in the midst of life with others. This leads to otherwise inaccessible levels of vitality and awareness.

"Though Gurdjieff's name has become familiar in recent years, the real nature of his work is still little known. The Way of Gurdjieff is an oral tradition. The understanding of his work can only be received by direct contact between teacher and pupil, and by the work of pupils together in organised groups. Under conditions of a special atmosphere of trust that can exist in such a group, people working together learn to face their own inner poverty and confusion. Working in this way, conscience is awakened along with consciousness. Consciousness, Conscience, and Sensation form the tripod upon which an integrated development of human potential must be based.

"Gurdjieff prepared a nucleus of people to be able to transmit his teaching after his death. This nucleus with the assistance of others who have subsequently been prepared maintains a series of centers throughout the world where Gurdjieff's methods are practiced."

he probably followed the Salt road then followed the Silk Road

                              From Her

8 - When your mind is open to My star, your heart to love and your
genitals to the triangle of passion, bringing all together in the center,
form the name of whom you seek to be touched by your love and pas-
                              sion.

17 - In the embrace of a lover seek the exchange of breath, the close-
ness of the heart and stare deep into the eyes. In them are the three
keys to the embrace of the soul and the soaring of the heart.

26 - Love, like a sword, must always be kept clean and sharp, lest it
be covered with dullness and rust.

35 - When the silence descends between you and a lover, learn to
speak with your eyes and hands, lest silence becomes your mate.

44 - The blackness in a mirror is like the shadows of a love lost; it
blocks you from reflecting on the love you have.

53 - A lover’ s womb is the furnace of her passions. Awaken its fire
when the glory has entered your mind, and love has taken you into his
arms. When the furnace has been filled with the seeds of your love,
seal it. Let the rod of creation melt in the heat of the furnace. Let the
words of love flow, and let breath fill you with ecstasy. When the holy
presence departs from your midst, retract the rod in reverence for the
beloved. Cool the furnace with a joined swirling touch.

62 - O seeker of truth! Open the gate of heaven. Walk upon the
straight and narrow path. Do you know of what I speak? I speak of
your heart, its joy and pain. I speak of your life, its glory and despair. I
speak of your mind, its wisdom and confusion. I speak of your dream,
its boundaries and disillusion. The Gate rests with peace and opens
with love. It renders open with but a smile of a beloved. The path is
narrow, for there can be no hate. It is straight, for it harbours no lie.
She in your arms is the key. In her chest lies a truth. In her tears, she
sheds pain. If the truth is pain, how can you ask for the gate to open?
His heart, My daughter, is the path on the road. If it wavers in your
arms, strengthen it. Take not each for granted. The heart knows and
the soul records. A broken heart is a broken promise. The promise is
the key. Your dream is the fruit and life is the gate.

Her intentions fall to the floor
The angel closes her eyes, the confusion that was hers
Belongs now, to the baby down the hall

Oh now feel it comin' back again
Like a rollin' thunder chasing the wind
Forces pullin' from the center of the earth again
                                I can feel it

Lightning crashes, a new mother cries
This moment she's been waiting for
The angels open her eyes, pale blue colored iris
Presents the sun and puts th glory out to hide, hide

Oh, now feel it comin' back again
Like a rollin' thunder chasing the wind
Forces pullin' from the center of the earth again

                                I can feel it
