On May 17, 2012 an M-class flare exploded from the sun. The eruption also shot out a burst of solar particles traveling at nearly the speed of light that reached Earth about 20 minutes after the light from the flare. An M-class flare is considered a "moderate" flare, at least ten times less powerful than the largest X-class flares, but the particles sent out on May 17 were so fast and energetic that when they collided with atoms in Earth's atmosphere, they caused a shower of particles to cascade down toward Earth's surface. The shower created what's called a ground level enhancement (GLE). GLEs are quite rare -- fewer than 100 events have been observed in the last 70 years, since instruments were first able to detect them. Moreover, this was the first GLE of the current solar cycle--a sure sign that the sun's regular 11-year cycle is ramping up toward solar maximum.

The path to this observation began on Saturday, May 5, when a large sunspot rotated into view on the left side of the sun. The sunspot was as big as about 15 Earths, a fairly sizable active region, though by no means as big as some of the largest sunspots that have been observed on the sun. Dubbed Active Region 1476, the sunspots had already shown activity on the back side of the sun -- as seen by a NASA mission called the Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory (STEREO) -- so scientists were on alert for more. Scientists who study high-energy particles from the sun had been keeping their eye out for just such an active region because they had seen no GLEs since December of 2006.

Bounty, the Gift of the Sacred King, and no way to harvest it.
The Fool came, and took of the Earth itself, and mixed it with water,
and shaped a Pot. And He took of the Grass, and shaped a Basket, and Nets,
and Clothing.
And He took wood from the Tree. A straight piece of wood, and he took
a stone, the very Bones of the Mother, and shaped it to a point, and fastened
it to the wood, and made a Spear.
With another stone He made a Hoe, and with another he crafted a
Knife, and gave them to the Men and Women.
And the Fool spoke, and said, "Look you here at Tools. They give you
claws and fangs, and extend your reach longer than any of the Brothers and
Sisters-in-Fur, even as high as the stars themselves. They will bring you
food, and clothing, and shelter. They are good servants, but poor masters,
for they can also be used in the service of War, and War will harm and kill
you, and destroy what you have. Learn from Earth, and be wise."

The Men and Women were cold, and the winds of Winter blew over them.
Ice and snow rushed around them, and they huddled together, fearing.
But the Fool came to them, with a new thing.

And the Men and Women gathered around the warmth, as planets gather

And the Fool said, "Look you here at Fire. It is warm and good; a
good servant, but a poor master indeed. Learn from this, that some things are
good when used correctly, and very bad indeed when used wrongly. For Fire
will warm your homes, and cook your food, and do many things for you, but it
can harm you, and kill you, and destroy what you have. You will find many
things like Fire. Learn from Fire, and be wise."

And the Fool took the clay pot, and filled it with Water, and placed
therein the meat of the hunt, and the fruits of the Earth. He placed the pot
upon the Fire, and the Water rolled and boiled, and the smell was savory to
the Men and Women.
And the Fool spoke, and said, "Look you here at Water, the Blood of
the Mother. It will refresh you, and cool you, and shall be your servant. But
mind you do not let it be your master, for it will drown you, and flood you,
and harm you and kill you, and destroy what you have. It is soft, but of all
things it will wear thru even the hardest object. You will find many things
like Water. Learn from Water, and be wise."

The Fool sat beside the Fire, and hummed to Himself, and as He hummed
He clapped his hands in time, and He made yet another new thing, and called it
Song. And the Men and Women took up the Song, and sang, and rejoiced.
And the Fool said, "Look you here at Air. Song is of the Air, of the
very Breath you take. Song will comfort you in sadness, and rejoice with you
in celebration. Song will weave Words into Magic, and can bend the edges of
Reality. Treat it with respect, and do not misuse it, for Song, and Words,
can twist and lie and turn you to a harmful way; take away your individuality
and turn you to a Mob, that knows not what it does."

son has drowned therein. Therefore I shall kill you."
And they took the Spear, made from the wood of the Tree, pointed with
the Bones of the Mother, and thrust it into the body of the Fool, and the
Fool smiled sadly, and, for the first time of many, died.

"Will you always do this Teaching, O Fool?" said the Lady.
"Assuredly so," replied the Fool, with a smile, "For are they not Our
children?"
"That they are," said the Lord, "But for how long shall You teach
them, and be slain in return?"
"For always," said the Fool. And he smiled, and a single tear coursed
down His cheek.

Thus it was, and so it is, and evermore shall be so!

takes place, it receives the different names. Together we call them

is subtle and wonderful.

All in the world know the beauty of the beautiful, and in doing
this they have (the idea of) what ugliness is; they all know the skill
of the skilful, and in doing this they have (the idea of) what the
want of skill is.

So it is that existence and non-existence give birth the one to

idea of) the other; that length and shortness fashion out the one the
figure of the other; that (the ideas of) height and lowness arise from
the contrast of the one with the other; that the musical notes and
tones become harmonious through the relation of one with another; and
that being before and behind give the idea of one following another.

Therefore the sage manages affairs without doing anything, and
conveys his instructions without the use of speech.

All things spring up, and there is not one which declines to show
itself; they grow, and there is no claim made for their ownership;
they go through their processes, and there is no expectation (of a
reward for the results). The work is accomplished, and there is no
resting in it (as an achievement).

The work is done, but how no one can see;
'Tis this that makes the power not cease to be.

Not to value and employ men of superior ability is the way to
keep the people from rivalry among themselves; not to prize articles
which are difficult to procure is the way to keep them from becoming
thieves; not to show them what is likely to excite their desires is
the way to keep their minds from disorder.

Therefore the sage, in the exercise of his government, empties
their minds, fills their bellies, weakens their wills, and strengthens
their bones.

He constantly (tries to) keep them without knowledge and without
desire, and where there are those who have knowledge, to keep them
from presuming to act (on it). When there is this abstinence from
action, good order is universal.

of water appears in its benefiting all things, and in its occupying,
without striving (to the contrary), the low place which all men
dislike. Hence (its way) is near to (that of) the Tao.

The excellence of a residence is in (the suitability of) the place;
that of the mind is in abysmal stillness; that of associations is in
their being with the virtuous; that of government is in its securing
good order; that of (the conduct of) affairs is in its ability; and
that of (the initiation of) any movement is in its timeliness.

And when (one with the highest excellence) does not wrangle (about
his low position), no one finds fault with him.

Favour and disgrace would seem equally to be feared; honour and
great calamity, to be regarded as personal conditions (of the same
kind).

What is meant by speaking thus of favour and disgrace? Disgrace is
being in a low position (after the enjoyment of favour). The getting
that (favour) leads to the apprehension (of losing it), and the losing
it leads to the fear of (still greater calamity):--this is what is
meant by saying that favour and disgrace would seem equally to be
feared.

And what is meant by saying that honour and great calamity are to be
(similarly) regarded as personal conditions? What makes me liable to
great calamity is my having the body (which I call myself); if I had
not the body, what great calamity could come to me?

Therefore he who would administer the kingdom, honouring it as he
honours his own person, may be employed to govern it, and he who would
administer it with the love which he bears to his own person may be
entrusted with it.

All-pervading is the Great Tao! It may be found on the left
hand and on the right.

All things depend on it for their production, which it gives to
them, not one refusing obedience to it. When its work is
accomplished, it does not claim the name of having done it. It
clothes all things as with a garment, and makes no assumption of being
their lord;--it may be named in the smallest things. All things
return (to their root and disappear), and do not know that it is it
which presides over their doing so;--it may be named in the greatest
things.

Hence the sage is able (in the same way) to accomplish his great
achievements. It is through his not making himself great that he can
accomplish them.

He who has in himself abundantly the attributes (of the Tao) is
like an infant. Poisonous insects will not sting him; fierce beasts
will not seize him; birds of prey will not strike him.



(The infant's) bones are weak and its sinews soft, but yet its
grasp is firm. It knows not yet the union of male and female, and yet
its virile member may be excited;--showing the perfection of its
physical essence. All day long it will cry without its throat
becoming hoarse;--showing the harmony (in its constitution).

To him by whom this harmony is known,
(The secret of) the unchanging (Tao) is shown,
And in the knowledge wisdom finds its throne.
All life-increasing arts to evil turn;
Where the mind makes the vital breath to burn,
(False) is the strength, (and o'er it we should mourn.)

When things have become strong, they (then) become old, which may
be said to be contrary to the Tao. Whatever is contrary to the Tao
soon ends.

meditation, are cumulative. One simply starts, and before long, one notices that some ache or
pain, which was obvious at the outset, now seems much improved or has vanished altogether.
Surely these rewards of daily exercise, the maintenance and well being of the body, are worth a
few minutes of time. Surely you did not expect to read one chapter and have instant mind con-
trol over the masses. Whatever effort would have been expended toward that goal can much
better be spent on the improvement of oneself; that is a far nobler mission, to be certain.
The second benefit of these techniques is the gradual development of the ability to direct, or
conversely, to act in accordance with, the flow of energy within the physical body. With this
power, one transcends the lower levels of consciousness that impede progress toward the reali-
zation of one's true nature and place in the universe.
Once we have acquired self-knowledge and understand the way of Nature, it is clearly evident
that no one can control the actions of another. In fact, if we can learn to control our own wants
and needs, let alone our fears and desires, we shall have accomplished a great deal. When that
is achieved, we shall no longer seek to control others, or even to interfere in their lives by giv-
ing advice. We shall glow with the vitality and energy of inner peace.
Seeking only to improve ourselves, we shall be seen as good examples to follow; and divest-
ing ourselves of petty ambition in order to pursue this great goal, we-shall be known as follow-
ers of peace. Because we know our inner strength cannot be threatened, we are unlikely to feel
the need for power over others. In this way, the true power can be achieved, because others,
motivated by self-interest, will want to know how we can do the things we shall learn herein.
And when they ask, we must tell them freely, and share all that we have, so that they, too, can
find the Way.
