Thales of Miletus (pron.: /ˈθeɪliːz/; Greek: Θαλῆς (ὁ Μιλήσιος), Thalēs; c. 624 BC – c. 546 BC) was a pre-Socratic Greek philosopher from Miletus in Asia Minor, and one of the Seven Sages of Greece. In mathematics, Thales used geometry to solve problems such as calculating the height of pyramids and the distance of ships from the shore. He is credited with the first use of deductive reasoning applied to geometry, by deriving four corollaries to Thales' Theorem. As a result, he has been hailed as the first true mathematician and is the first known individual to whom a mathematical discovery has been attributed.[5]

The illusion-of-truth effect states that a person is more likely to believe a familiar statement than an unfamiliar one. In a 1977 experiment participants were asked to read 60 plausible statements every two weeks and to rate them based on their validity. A few of those statements (some of them true, others false) were presented more than once in different sessions. Results showed that participants were more likely to rate as true statements the ones they had previously heard (even if they didn't consciously remember having heard them), regardless of the actual validity of the statement.

As the illusion-of-truth effect occurs even without explicit knowledge, it is a direct result of implicit memory. For such true 'models of the universe' must not only display the inner form
and structure of this universe, but must also reveal man's relation to it and his
present and possible fates within it. In this sense, certain of the Gothic
cathedrals are complete models of the universe, whereas a modem

schools for the achievement of higher states of consciousness, and had the
advantage of experience gained in such schools; whereas the designers of the
planetarium are scientists and technicians, clever and
qualified enough in their field, but claiming no particular knowledge of the
potentialities of the human machine with which they have to work.
In fact, if we are in possession of certain keys for their interpretation, the most
astonishing thing about these ancient 'models of the universe' arising in widely
separated ages, continents and cultures, is precisely their similarity. So much so that a
good case might be made out for the idea that higher consciousness always reveals the
same truth, solely on the basis of a comparative study of certain existing models of the
universe which seem to derive therefrom - for example, the Cathedral of Chartres, the
Great Sphinx, the New Testament, the Divine Comedy, or certain cosmic diagrams left
by the 17th century alchemists, the designers of the Tarot pack, and the painters of
some Russian ikons and Tibetan banners.

One of the main characteristics of modem thought is a contradiction
between the way man regards the external world, outside himself, and the
way he regards the internal world, inside himself.
As regards the external world, he has never been more objective, more
convinced of the universal application of laws, expressable by formulae and
consistently measurable in their effects. In this field, any belief which throws
doubt on the principle of measurability, for example, any belief in
intelligence or consciousness belonging to beings greater in scale than man,
is in danger of being regarded as superstition.
As regards his internal world, on the other hand, man has rarely been more
subjective, more convinced of the special validity of his every whim,
imagination, hope and fear, and less willing to admit that his inner world is
subject to any laws whatsoever. The greater part of modem psychology, and
especially of psycho-analysis, has been based on this subjectivity. And in this
field, it is precisely the belief in laws and measurability - for example, belief
that much of human psychology is the result of the calculable interplay of
types, or belief that man's inner world is subject to laws similar to those
governing the astronomical or microscopic worlds - which is called
superstition.

Expert explores how sunlight may affect ADHD patients

Researchers are interested in exploring how sunlight, sleep and screens (like those on computers and TVs) may affect those with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), says Dr. L. Eugene Arnold, a child psychiatrist and ADHD expert at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center's Nisonger Center.

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by developmentally inappropriate degrees of inattentiveness, impulsivity and hyperactivity. Although ADHD is the most common neuropsychiatric/behavioral disorder of childhood and has been extensively studied in young children, it occurs in all age groups. An estimated 13 million men, women and children in the United States fit the diagnosis for ADHD or one of its subcategories, says Arnold, who is professor emeritus of psychiatry at The Ohio State University, where he was formerly director of the division of child and adolescent psychiatry and vice chair of psychiatry. Arnold collaborated with Dr. Martijn Arns of the Netherlands on a recent study published in Biological Psychiatry that sheds new light on the increasing rates of prevalence of ADHD. This study found that "sunny" regions with high solar intensity, such as the U.S. states of California, Arizona, and Colorado, and countries like Spain and Mexico, have lower prevalence of ADHD. An apparent protective effect of sunlight accounted for 34-57 percent of the variation in ADHD prevalence. The authors speculate that this may be related to sunlight's effects on preventing disturbance circadian rhythm or "biological clock."

Brain oscillations reveal that our senses do not experience the world continuously

(Medical Xpress) -- It has long been suspected that humans do not experience the world continuously, but rather in rapid snapshots.

Now, researchers at the University of Glasgow have demonstrated this is indeed the case. Just as the body goes through a 24-hour sleep-wake cycle controlled by a circadian clock, brain function undergoes such cyclic activity – albeit at a much faster rate.

Professor Gregor Thut of the Institute of Neuroscience and Psychology, said: “Rhythms are intrinsic to biological systems. The circadian rhythm, with its very slow periodicity of sleep and wake cycles every 24 hours has an obvious, periodic effect on bodily functions.

“Brain oscillations – the recurrent neural activity that we see in the brain – also show periodicity but cycle at much faster speeds. What we wanted to know was whether brain function was affected in a cyclic manner by these rapid oscillations.”

The researchers studied a prominent brain rhythm associated with visual cortex functioning that cycles at a rate of 10 times per second (10Hz).

They used a ‘simple trick’ to affect the oscillations of this rhythm which involved presenting a brief sound to ‘reset’ the oscillation.

Testing subsequent visual perception, by using transcranial magnetic stimulation of the visual cortex, revealed a cyclic pattern at the very rapid rate of brain oscillations, in time with the underlying brainwaves.

Prof Thut said: “Rhythmicity therefore is indeed omnipresent not only in brain activity but also brain function. For perception, this means that despite experiencing the world as a continuum, we do not sample our world continuously but in discrete snapshots determined by the cycles of brain rhythms.”

The research, ‘Sounds reset rhythms of visual cortex and corresponding human visual perception’ is published in the journal Current Biology.

(Phys.org) May 17, 2013 —In a new study, a European research team suggests that the average intelligence level of Victorian-era people was higher than that of modern-day people. They base their controversial assertion on reaction times (RT) to visual stimuli given as tests to people from the late 1800s to modern times—the faster the reaction time, they say, the smarter the person.

The Victorian era has been highly touted by historians as one of the most productive in human history—inventions, observations and highly acclaimed art and music from that time still resonate today. The era was defined by Queen Victoria's reign in England which ran from 1837 until her death in 1901. Comparing the average IQ of people from that time with that of modern-day people is, of course, impossible—at least using traditional methods. The researchers suggest that reaction times to stimuli can be used as an alternative way to compare relative IQ levels

IQ tests themselves have come under scrutiny of late because they quite often reflect bias, such as education levels, societal norms, and other not-easily defined factors. Other research has shown that overall health, nutrition levels and degree of fatigue can impact IQ scores as well. For this reason, the team has turned to RT as a means of evaluating what they call general intelligence, which they claim to be a measure of elementary cognition.

(Medical Xpress)—A research team from the Evolution and Ecology Research Centre at the University of New South Wales has found that women find men most attractive when they have approximately ten days of beard growth. In their paper published in the journal Evolution and Human Behavior, the team describes how volunteers asked to look at pictures of men with various stages of beard growth, found men with ten days growth to be the most attractive and those with five days growth to be the least.

A team of researchers from Columbia University, City University of New York, the University of Central Florida (UCF), and Tohoku University and the National Institute for Materials Science in Japan, have directly observed a rare quantum effect that produces a repeating butterfly-shaped energy spectrum, confirming the longstanding prediction of this quantum fractal energy structure, called Hofstadter's butterfly.
