The first shows are remembered as being started in 264BC and the last were 600 years later, in 404AD during the reign of Emperor Honorius (395-423AD). Their end was possibly triggered by the stoning to death of a Christian monk called Telemachus who dared stand against them. At this time there were more than 170 Amphitheatres scattered throughout the former empire's dominions.

After the fall of the last Roman emperor of the West (Romulus Augustulus), Rome was controlled by Romanised barbarians. One such ruler was Theodoric the Goth whose Latin secretary Cassiodorus recounts in 523AD the shows he attended at the Colosseum. These shows included wrestling matches and bloody fights with beasts - the ancient Venationes - which could well result in the death of the scantily armed human fighter, the "venator" or "bestiarius". By the end of that century the Colosseum was already covered in vegetation.

By the late middle ages we have fresh accounts of the Colosseum being used for other purposes, first as fortress of a local barony, then as a stage for religious ceremonies and processions until eventually theatrical shows of little religious content were held and finally abolished by the Pope. Similar fates attended the other amphitheatres.

It can therefore be said that the beginning and end of the Gladiatorial shows went hand in hand with the rise and fall of the Roman Empire.

Study finds men most attractive with heavy-stubble

(Medical Xpress)—A research team from the Evolution and Ecology Research Centre at the University of New South Wales has found that women find men most attractive when they have approximately ten days of beard growth. In their paper published in the journal Evolution and Human Behavior, the team describes how volunteers asked to look at pictures of men with various stages of beard growth, found men with ten days growth to be the most attractive and those with five days growth to be the least.

Researchers suggest Victorian-era people more intelligent modern-day counterparts

(Phys.org) May 17, 2013 —In a new study, a European research team suggests that the average intelligence level of Victorian-era people was higher than that of modern-day people. They base their controversial assertion on reaction times (RT) to visual stimuli given as tests to people from the late 1800s to modern times—the faster the reaction time, they say, the smarter the person.

The Victorian era has been highly touted by historians as one of the most productive in human history—inventions, observations and highly acclaimed art and music from that time still resonate today. The era was defined by Queen Victoria's reign in England which ran from 1837 until her death in 1901. Comparing the average IQ of people from that time with that of modern-day people is, of course, impossible—at least using traditional methods. The researchers suggest that reaction times to stimuli can be used as an alternative way to compare relative IQ levels

IQ tests themselves have come under scrutiny of late because they quite often reflect bias, such as education levels, societal norms, and other not-easily defined factors. Other research has shown that overall health, nutrition levels and degree of fatigue can impact IQ scores as well. For this reason, the team has turned to RT as a means of evaluating what they call general intelligence, which they claim to be a measure of elementary cognition.

Brain oscillations reveal that our senses do not experience the world continuously

(Medical Xpress) -- It has long been suspected that humans do not experience the world continuously, but rather in rapid snapshots.

Now, researchers at the University of Glasgow have demonstrated this is indeed the case. Just as the body goes through a 24-hour sleep-wake cycle controlled by a circadian clock, brain function undergoes such cyclic activity – albeit at a much faster rate.

Professor Gregor Thut of the Institute of Neuroscience and Psychology, said: “Rhythms are intrinsic to biological systems. The circadian rhythm, with its very slow periodicity of sleep and wake cycles every 24 hours has an obvious, periodic effect on bodily functions.

“Brain oscillations – the recurrent neural activity that we see in the brain – also show periodicity but cycle at much faster speeds. What we wanted to know was whether brain function was affected in a cyclic manner by these rapid oscillations.”

The researchers studied a prominent brain rhythm associated with visual cortex functioning that cycles at a rate of 10 times per second (10Hz).

They used a ‘simple trick’ to affect the oscillations of this rhythm which involved presenting a brief sound to ‘reset’ the oscillation.

Testing subsequent visual perception, by using transcranial magnetic stimulation of the visual cortex, revealed a cyclic pattern at the very rapid rate of brain oscillations, in time with the underlying brainwaves.

Prof Thut said: “Rhythmicity therefore is indeed omnipresent not only in brain activity but also brain function. For perception, this means that despite experiencing the world as a continuum, we do not sample our world continuously but in discrete snapshots determined by the cycles of brain rhythms.”

The research, ‘Sounds reset rhythms of visual cortex and corresponding human visual perception’ is published in the journal Current Biology.

In their Perspective article published in the journal Science, the two describe the solar engine deep within the sun as its "heartbeat" and suggest that it underlies virtually all solar activity.

Expert explores how sunlight may affect ADHD patients

Researchers are interested in exploring how sunlight, sleep and screens (like those on computers and TVs) may affect those with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), says Dr. L. Eugene Arnold, a child psychiatrist and ADHD expert at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center's Nisonger Center.

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by developmentally inappropriate degrees of inattentiveness, impulsivity and hyperactivity. Although ADHD is the most common neuropsychiatric/behavioral disorder of childhood and has been extensively studied in young children, it occurs in all age groups. An estimated 13 million men, women and children in the United States fit the diagnosis for ADHD or one of its subcategories, says Arnold, who is professor emeritus of psychiatry at The Ohio State University, where he was formerly director of the division of child and adolescent psychiatry and vice chair of psychiatry. Arnold collaborated with Dr. Martijn Arns of the Netherlands on a recent study published in Biological Psychiatry that sheds new light on the increasing rates of prevalence of ADHD. This study found that "sunny" regions with high solar intensity, such as the U.S. states of California, Arizona, and Colorado, and countries like Spain and Mexico, have lower prevalence of ADHD. An apparent protective effect of sunlight accounted for 34-57 percent of the variation in ADHD prevalence. The authors speculate that this may be related to sunlight's effects on preventing disturbance circadian rhythm or "biological clock."

Our ancestors understood that Earth has a dynamic mind and spirit which must be recognized; they possessed beliefs such as Earth being a large terrapin on whose back we sit. They worshipped her; perhaps they were wise.

New agers embrace nature spirits and most use the word “Gaia” to describe Earth’s living consciousness. However, even many new agers get caught up in the fun of crystals, gemstones, fairies and such, but do not recognize the fact that Gaia herself might be the creator of UFOs and their occupants as well as the creator of fairies, nature spirits, and even the creator of paranormal events like ghosts. Most new agers (and most of us), look to space or time as the source of UFOs, and to the human subconscious as somehow mixed up in creating fairies and paranormal events.

For such true 'models of the universe' must not only display the inner form
and structure of this universe, but must also reveal man's relation to it and his
present and possible fates within it. In this sense, certain of the Gothic
cathedrals are complete models of the universe, whereas a modem
planetarium, for all its beauty, knowledge and accuracy, is not. For the latter
model completely omits man. The difference, of course, lies in the fact that
the cathedrals, directly or indirectly, were designed by men who belonged to
schools for the achievement of higher states of consciousness, and had the
advantage of experience gained in such schools; whereas the designers of the
planetarium are scientists and technicians, clever and
qualified enough in their field, but claiming no particular knowledge of the
potentialities of the human machine with which they have to work.
In fact, if we are in possession of certain keys for their interpretation, the most
astonishing thing about these ancient 'models of the universe' arising in widely
separated ages, continents and cultures, is precisely their similarity. So much so that a
good case might be made out for the idea that higher consciousness always reveals the
same truth, solely on the basis of a comparative study of certain existing models of the
universe which seem to derive therefrom - for example, the Cathedral of Chartres, the
Great Sphinx, the New Testament, the Divine Comedy, or certain cosmic diagrams left
by the 17th century alchemists, the designers of the Tarot pack, and the painters of
some Russian ikons and Tibetan banners.

One of the main characteristics of modem thought is a contradiction
between the way man regards the external world, outside himself, and the
way he regards the internal world, inside himself.
As regards the external world, he has never been more objective, more
convinced of the universal application of laws, expressable by formulae and
consistently measurable in their effects. In this field, any belief which throws
doubt on the principle of measurability, for example, any belief in
intelligence or consciousness belonging to beings greater in scale than man,
is in danger of being regarded as superstition.
As regards his internal world, on the other hand, man has rarely been more
subjective, more convinced of the special validity of his every whim,
imagination, hope and fear, and less willing to admit that his inner world is
subject to any laws whatsoever. The greater part of modem psychology, and
especially of psycho-analysis, has been based on this subjectivity. And in this
field, it is precisely the belief in laws and measurability - for example, belief
that much of human psychology is the result of the calculable interplay of
types, or belief that man's inner world is subject to laws similar to those
governing the astronomical or microscopic worlds - which is called
superstition.

The illusion-of-truth effect states that a person is more likely to believe a familiar statement than an unfamiliar one. In a 1977 experiment participants were asked to read 60 plausible statements every two weeks and to rate them based on their validity. A few of those statements (some of them true, others false) were presented more than once in different sessions. Results showed that participants were more likely to rate as true statements the ones they had previously heard (even if they didn't consciously remember having heard them), regardless of the actual validity of the statement.

As the illusion-of-truth effect occurs even without explicit knowledge, it is a direct result of implicit memory. Thales of Miletus (pron.: /ˈθeɪliːz/; Greek: Θαλῆς (ὁ Μιλήσιος), Thalēs; c. 624 BC – c. 546 BC) was a pre-Socratic Greek philosopher from Miletus in Asia Minor, and one of the Seven Sages of Greece. Many, most notably Aristotle, regard him as the first philosopher in the Greek tradition.[1] According to Bertrand Russell, "Western philosophy begins with Thales."[2] Thales attempted to explain natural phenomena without reference to mythology and was tremendously influential in this respect. Almost all of the other Pre-Socratic philosophers follow him in attempting to provide an explanation of ultimate substance, change, and the existence of the world—without reference to mythology. Those philosophers were also influential, and eventually Thales' rejection of mythological explanations became an essential idea for the scientific revolution. He was also the first to define general principles and set forth hypotheses, and as a result has been dubbed the "Father of Science", though it is argued that Democritus is actually more deserving of this title.[3][4]

In mathematics, Thales used geometry to solve problems such as calculating the height of pyramids and the distance of ships from the shore. He is credited with the first use of deductive reasoning applied to geometry, by deriving four corollaries to Thales' Theorem. As a result, he has been hailed as the first true mathematician and is the first known individual to whom a mathematical discovery has been attributed.[5]

The sound Hu becomes limited in the word Ham, for the letter m closes the lips. This word in Hindustani expresses limitation because Ham means I or we, both of which words signify ego. The word Hamsa is the sacred word of the Yogis which illumines the ego with the light of reality. The word Huma in the Persian language stands for a fabulous bird. There is a belief that if the Huma bird sits for a moment on the head of anybody it is a sign that he will become a king. Its true explanation is, that when a man’s thoughts so evolve that they break all limitation, then he becomes as a king. It is the limitation of language that it can only describe the Most High as something like a king. It is said in the old traditions that Zoroaster was born of a Huma tree. This explains the words in the Bible, ‘Except a man be born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the Kingdom of God.’ In the word Huma, hu represents spirit, and the word mah in Arabic means water. In English the word ‘human’ explains two facts which are characteristic of humanity: Hu means God and man means mind, which word comes from the Sanskrit Mana, mind being the ordinary man. The two words united represent the idea of the God-conscious man; in other words Hu, God, is in all things and beings, but it is man by whom he is known ( ADAM HU / or as you know it as MU HA MAD ..... the M were overlapping ). Human therefore may be said to mean God-conscious, God-realized, or God-man. The word Hamd means praise, Hamid, praiseworthy, and Mohammad, praiseful. The name of the Prophet of Islam was significant of his attitude to God.



Hur in Aragic means the beauties of the Heaven, its real meaning is he expression of heavenly beauty. Zuhur in Arabic means manifestation, especially that of God in nature. Ahura Mazda is the name of God known to the Zoroastrians. This first word Ahura suggests Hu, upon which the whole name is built.

All of these examples signify the origin of God in the word Hu; and the life of God in every thing and being.



Hay in Arabic means everlasting, and Hay-at means life, both of which words signify the everlasting nature of God. The word Huwal suggests the idea of omnipresence, and Huvva is the origin of the name of Eve, which is symbolic of manifestation; as Adam is symbolic of life, they are named in Sanskrit Purusha and Prakriti.



Jehovah was originally Yahuva, Ya suggesting the word oh and Hu standing for God, while the A represents manifestation. Hu is the origin of sound, but when the sound first takes shape on the external plane, it becomes A, therefore alif or alpha is considered to be the first expression of Hu, the original word. The Sanskrit alphabet as well as that of most other languages begins with the letter A, as does the name of God in several tongues. The word A therefore expresses in English one, or first; and the sign of alif expresses the meaning one, as well as first. The letter A is pronounced without the help of the teeth or tongue, and in Sanskrit A always means without.

The A is raised to the surface when the tongue rises and touches the roof of the mouth when pronouncing the letter l (lam), and the sound ends in m (mim). The pronunciation of which closes the lips. These three essential letters of the alphabet are brought together as the mystery in the Qua'an. With A deepened by ain the word Ilm is formed which means knowledge. Alim comes from the same, and means knower. Alam means state of condition, the existence which know.
