West Africa's God of Messages, Sex, and Deceit


When we think of tricksters, we generally imagine folk characters and culture heroes, not gods. Tricksters either tend to be associated with animal spirits (such as Coyote), or are Promethean figures ( see image below ) , archetypal "humans" who interact with and upset the world of the gods. But one of the world's greatest and most interesting trickster figures is not only a god, but a god of high metaphysical content. He is Es hu-Elegbara, one of the orisha, the West African deities that are worshiped in many related forms across African and the African diaspora in the New World.

While he embodies many obvious trickster elements-- deceit, humor, lawlessness, sexuality--Eshu-Elegbara is also the god of communication and spiritual language. He is the gatekeeper between the realms of man and gods, the tangled lines of force that make up the cosmic interface, and his sign is the crossroads. In the figure of Eshu-Elegbara, the West African tradition makes a profound argument about the relationship among spiritual communication, divination, and the peculiar chaotic qualities of the trickster. But before we investigate Eshu-Elegbara's character, we must first place him in the general context of orisha worship.

Moving along the seam between two different worldviews, he confuses communication, reveals the ambiguity of knowledge, and plays with perspective.

So Eshu is a master of exchange, or crossed purposes, of crossed speech. This is why his shrines are found both at crossroads and at the market, for he is master of such networks of desire. For example, he uses his magician's knowledge to make serpents that bite people on the way to the market, and then sells them the cure.[5]

One aspect of becoming the Wise Old Man is a fuller integration of the feminine components of the psyche. Some commentators have seen this androgyny represented in this tarot trump in the long robes and gentle appearance of the Old Man (Nichols 170). It may also be part of the meaning of the emasculation of Ouranos, the sky-father.

The Wise Old Man is often accompanied by a young girl of erotic character, who personifies life; for example, Lao-tzu and the dancing girl, Simon Magus and the prostitute Helen, Kingsor and Kundry. The pair is Logos and Eros, for they personify Meaning and Life. (Jung EJ 118-9, 123, MC 233; Crowley 88) Which girl accompanies XI.Old Man? Is it XXI.World (the dancing girl)? Or Fortitude or Justice? We will have to wait and see.



The hourglass is an obvious symbol of the inexorable, irreversible flow of time, but also of the "eternal return," for although the flow is irreversible, it will eventually stop; then everything must be inverted, and we will be back again at the beginning. Thus each Aeon has its own destiny, and each Aeon must yield to the next. (Chronos was also called Aeon - Aion = epoch, world, lifetime, generation.) (Biedermann s.vv. Chronus, hourglass; LSJ s.v. aion)

However the hourglass also has a more esoteric significance. The higher and lower vessels represent heaven and earth, and the descending sand or fluid represents the stream of spirit descending into matter; it shows us that although the life force runs out, there may be an inversion, a return of the spirit to heaven, and a rebirth. (Cooper s.v. hourglass) We may also interpret the hourglass as showing the decline of physical vitality (the sand or fluid) balanced by an increase of spiritual vitality (the air, spiritus); the Wise Old Man's head (higher vessel) is less filled with earthly concerns and becomes full of the spirit.

The lower and higher vessels have the shape of the alchemical symbols for fire and water, respectively: a triangle and a triangle inverted. The Wise Old Man represents the conjunction of the fiery and watery tendencies, for Water represents his tendency to withdraw and turn inward, while Fire represents his tendency to guide and teach others. He works both in heaven and on earth, and the fruits of his heavenly accomplishment flows down into his earthly activity. (Case 115; Pollack I.71, 74)

XI.Old Man also represents the Alchemist, for, as Eliade (F&C ch. 15) observes, the alchemist puts himself in the place of Time, by accelerating the entelechies of Nature. Thus the hourglass is also a kerotakis, a reflux condenser, which was one of the earliest alchemical instruments, attributed to Maria the Jewess (probl. before 3rd cent. CE). It comprises two symmetrical vessels connected one above the other. They are called Heaven and Earth or Heaven and Hades; use of this apparatus and consequent references to "things above" and "things below" may have been the source of the Hermetic axiom, "as above so below, as below so above." The principal use of the kerotakis is as follows: sulphur is heated in "Hades below," in the vessel of Fire. The vapors rise to "Heaven above," where they react with the metal to be transmuted. They condense to fluid in this vessel of Water, whence they descend again, as black sulfides and liquid sulphur, to be reheated in the vessel of Fire. Thus there is a continual recirculation between Above and Below with a consequent transformation and perfection of the metal; it consumes its own substance like the uroboros serpent. (Hopkins 74; Lindsay ch. 11; Read 15)

Saturn's head is often hooded, which represents the declining power of the setting, Autumn sun and that the Wise Old Man is hidden away from the world (Case 113-4; Cooper s.v. sickle). The colors associated with Saturn are black and the darker shades of brown and blue, which represent pitiless Time, renunciation, sadness and dissolution (black), but also wisdom, truth, peace, simplicity and contemplation (blue) (Biedermann s.v. Saturn; Cooper s.vv. colours, planets). Here, the blue hood on the black/brown robe of the Old Man represents a wise head on an aging body. His white beard and eyebrows represent purity and illumination (Case 113; Cooper s.v. colours). Note that there are only two things that will turn a beard white: age or a life-transforming crisis that ages prematurely. The plant most associated with Saturn is the asphodel, a symbol of regret, which grows in the Elysian Fields on the Isle of the Blest, which Saturn rules (Cooper s.vv. asphodel, plants). It is twilight, of course, because these times of day represent the threshold between the dark and the light, the warmth of life yielding to the cold of death, and the darkness of ignorance yielding to illumination of wisdom (Cooper s.v. twilight).

Of all European pagan deities, Hermes is the one most closely aligned with Eshu. Like Hermes, Eshu is the divine messenger, and relays information between the gods and between humans and the gods. A small, very dark man, he walks with a large staff, and is often sucking on a pipe, candies, or his fingers. He the "roadmaker;" he "sets the affairs of the earth in order,...is so swift that he can be the messenger for many,...[and] can circle the earth in an instant."[1] Eshu's caprice, quickness, and agility of body and mind are all characteristics he shares with Hermes, perhaps reflecting the perennial spiritual characteristics of communication.

The Fon have a wonderful way of imagining Legba's mastery of crossings. Mawu tells the gods that whoever can come before her and simultaneously play a gong, a bell, a drum, and a flute while dancing to their music would be chief of the gods. All the macho gods attempt and fail, but Legba succeeds, not just demonstrating his agility, but his ability to maintain a balance of crossed or contrary forms and forces (and incidentally providing a window into the unique genius of African music and rhythm). Legba dances not only to the beat of a different drummer, but to the beats of many different drummers at the same time.

Like the kabbalistic Tree of Life, Ifa is described as having "roads," "pathways," or "courses," resonant linkages of images and meanings -- obviously Eshu's bag.[14] For the Fon, whose system of Fa divination is very similar to the Yoruba's Ifa, Fa is destiny, the pattern of the day, the individual and the cosmos. Each person has an individual Fa, just as each person has an individual Legba. Because Legba is the only god who knows the "alphabet of Mawu," he is "sent by Mawu to bring to each individual his Fa, for it is necessary that a man should know the writing which Mawu has used to create him."[15]

In many tales, Legba both causes and solves a power play among the orisha, and he does so by conveying information. In one, Sagbata, the lord of earth, and Hevioso, the lord of sky, are perpetually besting one another, though Hevioso is generally agreed to be superior. Legba lies and tells Mawu that there is no water in the sky, which allows Hevioso to cut off the rain, causing a horrible draught. Then Legba goes to Sagbata and tells him to build a huge fire on earth, which he does. Mawu becomes afraid that the flames will burn even heaven, and she orders Hevioso to make it rain, reducing his prominence and tentatively reconciling the brothers. Among the tales of the Yoruba gods, Eshu similarly propels the narratives of jealousy and power by occupying certain privileged places where he gives ideas and information--not the whole story, but just enough to make the story happen. Researchers discover how and where imagination occurs in human brains

Philosophers and scientists have long puzzled over where human imagination comes from. In other words, what makes humans able to create art, invent tools, think scientifically and perform other incredibly diverse behaviors?

The answer, Dartmouth researchers conclude in a new study, lies in a widespread neural network—the brain's "mental workspace"—that consciously manipulates images, symbols, ideas and theories and gives humans the laser-like mental focus needed to solve complex problems and come up with new ideas.

Their findings, titled "Network structure and dynamics of the mental workspace," appear the week of Sept. 16 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

"Our findings move us closer to understanding how the organization of our brains sets us apart from other species and provides such a rich internal playground for us to think freely and creatively," says lead author Alex Schlegel , a graduate student in the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences. "Understanding these differences will give us insight into where human creativity comes from and possibly allow us to recreate those same creative processes in machines."

Scholars theorize that human imagination requires a widespread neural network in the brain, but evidence for such a "mental workspace" has been difficult to produce with techniques that mainly study brain activity in isolation. Dartmouth researchers addressed the issue by asking: How does the brain allow us to manipulate mental imagery? For instance, imagining a bumblebee with the head of a bull, a seemingly effortless task but one that requires the brain to construct a totally new image and make it appear in our mind's eye.
