I would mot have used sand blasting

On peeking at your photo it looks like the sand may have damaged some of the insulation on the windings near the laminations You will find that sand will find its way into every nook and cranny and when using air to clear it away it will probably work the sand further into the windings and later probably wear away the insulation

Please what size wire did you use and How many turns?
