  • Degausing coil from TV

I have a question : what kind of wire is inside degausing coil from TV or PC monitor ? I need a lot of wire to wind 2 230-230 isolation transformers and found that enamelled wire is costly , could this wire from degausing coil be by accident suitable for 230V AC ? I really hope so but need advice before start winding.

I doubt that there would need to be any real quantity there.

If you don't mind some hard graft, you could pick up a couple of
old microwave ovens from your recycling centre. They will be happy
to be shot of them (especially if you offer to return the steel panels
    to them, duly flattened out).

Then cut into the big transformer with an angle grinder to get at the
coils. Soak the cut transformer in water overnight (the longer the better)
and the coils should fairly easily slide off. The enamelled wire is pretty
    handsome stuff.

      Hi Wrtner,

I have pulled apart a couple of these and found the wire not to be copper.

I could not resolder the ends to normal copper wire - no matter how hot I
      made my iron.

On scraping the coating from the wire, it looks like Aluminium or something?

Well, according to this page it should work fine at 230V.
electronics repair made easy: Understanding the Degaussing coil in CRT television

however still I'm not sure what kind of insulation and material it is made of.

P.S. Thinking about it more , it could be very valuable . Degausing coil is connected directly to AC and large current is flowing through it

I have never known Al wire in microwave oven transformers. Only
copper, with diameters 0.93mm and 0.42mm.

            Digging deeper....

Recommended wire for degaussing coil is copper or aluminum wire with poliurethane coating UEW class

I've used plenty of degauss coils from PC monitors, for 2ltr pop bottle Tesla towers mainly.
It's around 24/26 gauge and there are hundreds of feet of it per coil !
The black electrical tape comes off best if the coil is from a really old monitor, mid 1990's type of vintage....otherwise it's a sticky mess and then it's easiest to leave the coil draped over a chair or something for weeks, until the glue dries off.

All of the coils i've used, about a dozen, have been straight copper and with a high quality of insulation

                  Hi all,

@ wrtner I have dismantled about a dozen microwave oven and 2 out of 12, cheap units, had very lite coils. The wire is aluminum coated with copper. It can't be easily welded, probably in a rare gas environment like argon. Those coils usually have crimp terminals at their ends.

The best degaussing coils are to be found in large tube TVs and in Sony monitors. Few other brands of TV or monitor have the same quality of components. Their degaussing coils are often smaller in size with thinner wire.

In a 28" you will likely find AWG24, in a 32" you can expect AWG22 wire and in a 40" AWG20. Few use Aluminum wire in their coils but I found 2 coils so far.

                  Hope this info helps,

                  Michel
