Slider's light is infinitely more interesting to me, and you, than a solar powered led light from China... but it is not infinitely more interesting to 99.9% of the population who do not understand it, and have no desire to do so.

A product such as a wireless DC transmitter would demand a much higher price while catering to the needs of the community. Should China decide they want a piece of that pie then it would be mass produced and start appearing on the shelves, disseminating the technology far and wide, which would be a good thing for this community...

If you cannot compete with vast economic power you must stay one step ahead of it, and this is something the community can do, becoming a driving force of technological evolution and innovation.

Just my view, feel free to disagree.

@Rob, while this statement is very true, for many it is also very frustrating. My wife is a vendor in the Arts & Crafts circuit and does several shows a year. Due to licensing her product is not replicated by others without license, but we see others stuff copied all the time. Someone will introduce a new product that sells extremely well and by the next show, several vendors are peddling their version of that new product. Those people do not even have the courtesy of purchasing the product from the person who came up with the idea, they will sketch, photograph, etcetera the item and sell it cheaper than the original at the next opportunity. It is such a shame for the person with the original idea, but it is the way the marketplace works. I know Slider has spent considerable time developing his products, possibly selling on ebay or a private site where quantities sold is somewhat private would be a good direction for the short term. Once a product is shown to have consumer appeal, it will be duplicated and sold at a price that the originator cannot compete with.

Very valid Rob, no problems from me about your outloook.
To me, that is the delightful paradox of the experiments we all do. To be copied, emulated, beaten at the sale price point by a mass marketing concern has its joys in this field. Most people have no wish to sell anything and for some, those of better financial means perhaps, it can be a relaxing weekend hobby affair of learning and gaining insight into interesting projects.
We have little chance of shaking the masses off the corporate tree of micro progressions, like PC's, cellphones, WiFi technologies...so a push is a marvellous thing. I'm of the opinion that what we see on the shelves of Walmart certainly did not leave the R+D departments last month as their latest and greatest. If the latest and greatest were the situation, several huge conglomerates would live or die by their latest product. Market timing is more likely the way it goes.

There is an unwitting alliance in the nefarious replication arena. One wihich a 'one trick pony' would suffer from, but not neccessaily being the same case for generally inventive types. Having a license is a great fend off and knowing of your wife's business Brad, that area needs to have such safeguards. I don't think that future energy needs require such protection...more that it needs expansion by the very means that normally throttles other ideas.

I must mention an omission that i'm embarrasingly guilty of so far in this thread, that is the help and support of Prof Steve Jones. Without whom, I wouldn't have had the same confidence levels in projects currently underway. He has tested the garden lights, along with Brad, and been of such a supportive kind and helpful nature...along with Brad

@rob: I strongly disagree. I am one of the 99.99%. I don't believe anything unless I see it and I can see this.

I wouldn't discount the feelings of the 99.99% just because we do not believe anything some random guy says. I think you'll find that we are receptive of demonstrable stuff. Like these lights. That will (if my Googling is correct) keep functioning for decades.

Now THAT is f**king great stuff. Particularly if someone found the way to harness the combined power of these energy collectors. Imagine this....

.... festooned with 1,000,000 of these lights!!! Imagine this...

... surrounded by 1,000,000 floating lights!!!

And imagine a child, or an adult child (yes, we are) planting something in the ground and see-ing... seeing SOMETHING. Seeing something that will plant a seed that will grow in a way greater than the seeds planted by the even best teachers could possible hope for.....

          "What if?"

@slider2732: you might have missed the international shipping thing. To be honest I'd much, much rather you priced this as a sciency project thing than anything that would get you working at a loss.

Think about it... When priced so that you make a wage, it doesn't matter if you sell one or 1,000. You're making a profit. Do ebay, do amazon. If YOU are making a wage then someone else can make a wage if/when it gets bigger. Forget China. Do China (if you like) if/when the time comes, but don't let silly stuff hold you back.

And if you can't be arsed with the hassle of selling to the UK I, of course, understand.

edit: and if any of that comes across as anything other than positive then that is not my intention.

Haha no problem Regster and, yes, sorry I completely missed your post, being the last one on the other page

I can ship anywhere that the Post Office can, it's just that VFM would start to suffer. If someone wanted to pay the shipping, then i'd ship to the undisclosed folks on Mars if they wanted !
(Ramble time - that takes some thinking about but they do say that black budget technologies are years ahead...and we already have shiny metal pieces being found on the surface by Curiosity...or bits of the rover are falling away if we take NASA's theory on it. Anyway, if it was part of the rover then I hope they keep scooping and finding more bits of rover. Once those shiny bits total above the total weight of Curiosity then NASA will have to rethink their excuse. Personally, I hope they live stream the scoopings and discover a Coke can).

No worries, I've just sent some money... is that enough?

btw the whole posting a YouTube vid every time you made a light wouldn't be necessary if you just used ebay or Amazon. It's obviously hilariously unlikely that you'd spend this much time on a forum like this just to rip someone off for a few sheckles. What you can't do here is build a reputation/history.

And when push comes to shove, although I wouldn't mind touching one of these gizmos, if you really have issues with sending stuff back home (to the home of the rightful monarchy of the UK that is) then I wouldn't mind if you planted a couple of them in a place where children and/or old people hang out near you.

edit: but I would like to see a video of that... as in the placement.

Hey cheers Paul, i'll PM you, there have been some comical postage calculations ! But I will post them

I fully agree about reputation and whatnot. Am intending to get going on the website side to things while there's interest in sales. Can showcase up and coming prototype products for feedback too.

                    Wireless Floating Lightbulbs

Ok, some people agree with me and some don't, that's fine.

I have grabbed a few ideas and put them together to show you the potential I see in my personal outlook.

Take the principle of wireless power transmission, here the first replication done by TK of Marco's system:

                    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8PHea4pIaG0

Combine it with the principle the voice coil operates on:

                    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VXKLa8vyIXc

A version of which is also being discussed here currently:

                    UFO levitating magnet - YouTube

What you will end up with is a wireless powered floating lightbulb. I don't think anybody is selling floating lightbulbs yet, so opportunity there for the little guy. Should it be copied and mass manufactured cheaply then the technology would spread rapidly, which quite annoyingly for the little guy would cut him out of the market as mentioned, and he would have to move onto a new product. It's not a perfect solution I know, but it would steer technological development in the way you want it to go.

                    Rob

I hadn't considered it, though at this time am open to such ideas.
Main thing for my wife and I is that we own our house outright and so any move would be difficult.
Was part of the moving criteria from Minnesota, this one costing 13K in 2008. We got rid of the mortgage on the other with the sale and were able to buy in full. We did however get what we paid for, but do intend to fix it up...and always have.

Hi Mark, I found this circut , I think this might be what I'm looking for, but I don't understand its' operation.
Monitor caps and dump to batteries?

Have you thought about selling home made oscilloscopes? the ones that connect to a PC? You could sell them complete with USB sound card. Lots of people don't have a scope it seems, but really could use this. Well, at least I'd definitely buy one from you.

                                Hi Shylo,
As I understand the circuit, it's in 3 sections. The first section sets up a transistor and MOSFET pulsing, that pulsing then goes to the second section contained in the middle, via an isolation LED send and receive block...basically seperating the output of the first section from the middle section.
That middle section is a flip flop,. alternately firing one side and then the other side of itself. Such circuts can be found in railroad crossings, to make the red lights alternately flash.
The output pulses of that section then cross once again via another LED send and receive block, to the third section.
That third section is a copy really of the first one, but here we have a motor included on the output. On both sections 1 and 3 are capacitors which charge up with each energising of the transistor/MOSFET stage and release the energy when the section has finsihed firing, back into the batteries.
Much would depend on my interpretatioon of the I/R LED seperator stages, with the thoughts on power handling being a concern. They may not be I/R isolation stages though.

Hey wonza...interesting idea. I've heard of them, but never seen a circuit diagram of one. Well, not yet lol, I have a feeling that may change. If it can be built with readily available parts then heck, why not
I'd like to build and test such a thing myself, because my Protek 6502 seems to only sense AC mains hum right now ! I know they'll probably have an upper limit of 20kHz or so, due to soundcard input, but is that the type you mean ?

Working on the website at the moment. Filling 2 orders and uploading a video for one of them.
Bonus Bags are something i'm wishing to gauge interest about. With any order at the moment i'll be sending out random components parts that I know I find useful and that you guys may too. Transistors, MOSFET's, HV caps, ferrite toroids, LED's, resistors, that sort of thing. Completely free, as a thanks.
Much more info when I get the website sorted in the next few days
Thanks again to Aaron, for allowing this thread for direction discussions.
