I'd like to build and test such a thing myself, because my Protek 6502 seems to only sense AC mains hum right now ! I know they'll probably have an upper limit of 20kHz or so, due to soundcard input, but is that the type you mean ?

It seems pretty simple to make, but if you bundle it with a soundcard you've tested, maybe even burn the software onto CD too, I'm sure you'd get lots of people interested.

      Thanks for the info
That is a project on the must do list. I've got Xubuntu Linux here and have no idea of anything above Windows XP (BIOS on this PC says 2002). But have found an oscilloscope piece of software in the Ubuntu Software Center. There are a few PCI soundcards out in my shed
It could turn out that the gear is too old for modern PC's, or, that it gives another use for an old spare PC that people may have.

You can get USB sound cards for peanuts on ebay: USB 2 0 to 3D Audio Sound Card Adapter Virtual 5 1 CH Green | eBay

If you let me know how much you'd charge to build the adapter +labor +postage I'd buy one from you.

          Wow, amazing deal that !
I noted they don't support Linux, so had a hunt around for discussions about such devices. This looks promising: HOWTO: USB Audio device - Ubuntu Forums
In any case, i'm going to have a go at all this as a weekend project, now that the 2 orders so far were posted out today.
Can probably get a spare system board to run XP (PIII processor) and i'll see what the oscilloscopes are like on that. Then see if the Linux side to it works.

If I have the bits here and I get a Windows version running, then you'd just pay postage. Sure I value my time and parts, but I also value being given the heads up about something like this and will have learned something very useful.

            I want one too!

Slider, you get the o-scope working, put me down for one. I have an older laptop I would even be willing to reload with linux. PM me if you need parts or anything to get started on this project.

                Update:
So far, i've got what's simply called Oscilloscope to run native on this PC and have got TrueRTA software to run under WINE.
Built one cable, but used 100K and 20K resistors for extra safety...and seems I overdid it. On connecting up, I get a quick blip type of signal from a blocking oscillator, but nothing more. The resistance will have to be lowered.
Got a spare system board running with a HDD that had XP on it. It had that hooky TinyXP on it but works and probably why it worked with the system board instead of throwing up a stop message at boot.

I've uploaded a video for building the Thortz Energy Garden Light.
It gives at least the knowledge, step by step, of how they are constructed but is intended as a pause and do building video.
The logo which will be used on the website is also shown.

                    Bit of an update..

The website is here: Thortz Energy

Work on it has been slow, due to trying to sort out our car and the Immigration requests.
The upshot of all is dire.
I have a medical appointment booked in Tulsa tomorrow at 11am, results to be picked up on Monday. All forms and results have to be with the Government by the 24th. My wife and I don't mind the mad requests like a picture of us holding a recent newspaper together, but have struggled with all this for the past 5 years since we were married !
The car still overheats after anything financially possible has been tried and we have no way of renting a car for the two trips.
Today was supposed to have seen a flu shot, which the doctor requires before the visit...not that i've had the flu since teenage years (my regular videos prove general good health in fact) and know all the rumours about mercury being added to such jabs and the ineffectiveness.

                    To outline the car:
2001 Ford Escort SE 2.0L. 82000miles. Warms up over about 5 miles and then rattles like a diesel.
We've only allowed that to happen 4 times and when cold again it will drive for the same 5 miles (Tulsa is 50 miles away). The worst occasion saw the oil light come on and when walking back the next day to where it had to be abandoned the oil level was back to normal.
Cabin heat is great and helps the engine when turned to full on.
Fan works and kicks in ok.
Cooling system doesn't appear to leak anywhere.
                    Radiator warm top to bottom.
Top hose hot, bottom hose toasty.
No discolouration of the engine oil or water.
Before the new radiator cap, approx 1L of water would be needed each time the car overheated and is believed to have bubbled out of the expansion tank.
No oil is lost or used.

Remedies - new plugs, oil change, oil filter, radiator flush and degunk product added, reflushed with a hose from the top hose connection as well as radiator filler cap.
                    New radiator cap yesterday.
Current diagnosis, water pump or head gasket.

So...with no way to get to Tulsa and the prospect of removal from the country, Thortz Energy is paused.
I don't want to sound dramatic, it's just the way it is without a realistic route forward and I want to apologise if anyone was thinking or ordering or if I have been any way remiss in follow ups.

Anyone know of what else to check or have tips for overheating cars ?
We've looked through and followed just about everything found online (the ZX1 is often confused with our SE).

Have you checked the thermostat, easy and cheap to replace.

Yeah..bit complicated on that one too. We bought a new one, but just 1 screw stops the housing coming away. The coil pack comes off, then the plate underneath to get to the thermostat housing. But, of the 3 screws to finally remove it, 2 come out, the other is underneath and at the back.
When the new radiator cap went on, the radiator changed its characteristics. The bottom hose warmed up where before it would still be quite cool even with overheating and the whole radiator warmed, rather than just near the top.
Yet, it still overheats in the same way as before.

I've had that flu shot. $31.99
Wifes daughter has loaned us the $150 for the medical and we're using what we had for bill money to rent the car.
After getting a couple of food items at Walgreens, the machine refused my wifes EBT card, bit embarrassing to say the least and we knew there was $80 on it. Turns out, when she rang to find out what had happened, that the computers apparently went down for a short while at whatever mission control is for such things. Nice timing !
Still, the British Bulldog spirit is going to win through.
These are really blog entries rather than posts, sorry about that

After picking up the results on Monday and posting everything off, i'll get back to the website and experiments.

                          All done !

Thanks to a very kind hire car company, my wife's parents and daughter, plus a lot of walking..the Immigration paperworks will be there by Friday afternoon
The car is still up on ramps, the sump bolt rounded off when I went to change the oil after putting lifter Gunk cleaner in there and now has a Dremmel notch cut in it. Hoping to get a pipe wrench from a yard sale this weekend and get back on the road.
                          But all else is done.

Am delighted to be offering a new wireless energy product too, should people not have the materials, have no time to construct or are merely inquisitive.
I've decided to build up some Simple Wireless Electricity Systems.
They relate to this video as cleaner versions of the prototype shown: Simple Wireless Electricity System - YouTube

                            Hi Slider,
I have been very busy here so I'm a bit late in thanking you for your rapid handling of my order. All things received as promised and more. The how to videos are great.
I would like to place another order, should I PM you here or would you rather I go to Thortz Energy? I have been to the site & signed as guest but not sure how to PM or place an order there??
                            Thanks again, Gene

                              The earthlights are awesome!

Any way to use the same concept and step it up a bit to produce 5-10 watts of power? If so, let me know, cause I have been developing low energety aquaponics systems here in Mexico, and normally, we go with solar, but that adds a lot of cost to a small system.

Heck, if you could get them up to 10 watts continuous, I know a lot of people who could use that for powering their homes in the developing world.

But the way, forget Kickstarter. Go with IndieGoGo, they are better for these sorts of things.

Let me know if you need help with getting a web shop running. That's what I do for a living.
