Just for fun, The Tesla Spooky Spirit Radio.

Someone at ASTRO SA sent me this link for the Tesla Spooky Radio. (Ok this is not my idea).

This isn't in any way a true Tesla telluric device or a serious Tesla RIG, that would make T-rex proud.

However - It does seem like a good, just-for-fun easy project for some laughs. Has anyone here at the EG Forum constructed this Spooky Radio? What do ya think?

The Tesla Spooky Radio is plugged directly into the iMac computer sound-in port. Audio Hijack Pro software provides the gain and real time sound effects based on the radio's input.

Actually as I already had 95% of the parts, I've actually build the thing up last night. (Except for the spiral coils shown on top of the jam jar). So I'll use device with some 'real coils' instead to see if I can pick up AM stations or "voices from beyond"...

On further investegation this so called Spooky 'tesla' radio isn't so spooky. It's nothing more than a crystal radio setup with the 1N34A diode, a ferrite loopstick, and a mono plug interface. So this isn't something to wet ya pants over really. However it may prove to be a handy little device for those into "Crystal sets" etc. It also shows that the 1N34A is a 'light' sensitive device.

I saw this before and thought it was pretty cool at the time, but after reading some of the info it's all basically an illusion. All the "spooky" stuff is just audio effects, the schematic is a basic crystal radio circuit, and unlike the text in the video implies there's nothing strange about the "spirit" sounds at all, he's tuned it "nearly" to an AM radio station and pitch shifted the sounds. Spooky indeed This is more about the audio processing than the receiver. The light sensitivity is interesting though.

I do it like this.

If you make a Tesla transformer resonant at the same frequency as a radio
broadcast, and drive it with some power in continuous wave mode while using a
regular portable radio tuned just off the Tesla coil frequency to hear the radio
station, then play with the tuning of the Tesla transformer all kinds of weird
and (spooky type) sounds come out, Spacey type sounds too.

All that is needed is to put a hand near the Air terminal and move it in and out to
make the portable radio go crazy sounding.
Different tuning on the portable radio and the Tesla Coil will cause different
effects of noise distortions interference or whatever is the cause.

If the portable radio is tuned spot on to it's station, then the Tesla
transformer can be tuned to block it almost completely if the portable radio is close, I haven't
tried it at distance.

Oh and if the Tesla coil tuning is sharp the radio reception can be very good
on both sides of the Tesla coils frequency of operation. So the Tesla coil only
blocks a very small band, if it is tuned up tight and neat.

I'm only talking of 12 volts driving voltage.
