Why is the Magnetic Monopole the Holy Grail of free energy?

What makes the Magnetic Monopole so great? How would it make free energy? Any good material to read on the subject?

As a concept, having only one pole means you have all repulsive force between multiple monopoles which would imply you could fashion a wheel that spins of it's own accord. With such a wheel you could operate a transmission, a pump, dynamo or other method of extracting usable work from it. No fuel, no batteries, just free non polluting energy.
