Hi jeff, thanks for sharing the pictures and information.
Have been researching the earthship design method for awhile now.
The only aspect not completely sure of, is the build and design of the cooling methods, though probably something based on evaporative cooling, natures way.
Also am aware of how the architect that started this earthship method, ran into the usual suppression tactics of the few wanting to keep people tethered to their control structures.
If these ways are so great, why do they have to force people to follow them, you folks can probably figure that one for yourselves.
    peace love light

Hi, thanks for sharing, looks great! Err, I was wondering if you could give a ballpark of how much a modest house like this costs? I heard these houses stay 75 degrees year round in New Mexico which gets pretty cold...and there's no AC/Heater or evaporative coolers! That old barn looks great!

I worked for Reynolds for five years. Quit 4 years ago as my birthday present to myself. I'm putting cool tubes in my design for cooling so that the incoming air to the living room will be cooled to cave temperature by traveling 'underground' in the berm. The air will be drawn through the cool tubes through natural convection when I open the skylight. Thanks for the interest. As far as cost, if you are doing the labor yourself.....most of the money goes into a R-80 insulated roof. I'm doing a concrete abbreviated dome on the living room of my ship and am going to see how effective a foot of pumicecrete on top of the concrete will be for insulation as far as something cheap. can come back and add foam later if I have to

As far as cost I have spent $520 on what I have done so far. Mostly portland and rebar. I get sand from a dry river bed about 2 miles away. That figure does not include the cost of gasoline to haul the 'free' materials. And yes the bond beam should be poured all at once but its just not gonna happen. Im mixing concrete by hand.
