Hi
I tried a few months ago charging a 12 volt battery using a 0.02uF cap inline 240VAC with a FWBR, and it worked. I didn't really bother to take down any figures but was pleased that it was charging the battery.
In times of old in garages, they would use the mains voltage, current limited by incandescent light bulbs. If using the cap method it would be worth putting a fuse inline in-case the cap shorts.
Regards
John
