what do you mean, electric? gas? Diesel? Carbon monoxide? what type of power do you need?
Good luck if you're looking for electric, the only one that I think might work is John bedini's stuff taken to the Nth degree, and honestly battery chemistry has come a long way zinc air is nearing production at which time 600 miles range will be normal. With electric the greater issue is the controller and the motor, believe it or not automotive electric motors are kind of behind the curve, only a few hundred horsepower out of stuff you or I could reasonably buy(like less than 10 grand for the motor) and ofc the controllers available for DIY car's are not exactly state of the art, even for the 1970s
Otherwise there are lots of options, only limited by your imagination. Heck you could even build a new Gyradoscope if you are a good enough machinist. Honestly, if you just applied the new engine technologies to efficiency, rather than Horsepower you could build a sweet little high mileage 1-300hp motor. Which is something auto manufacturers in the usa choose not to do.
Basically, you need a prime mover with a power band similar to your transmission/diff is designed to handle. There's no free lunch here, building a car on alternative power sources is expensive, you'll probably spend 2-3x the value of the car to do it. Unless you happen to be John Bedini, or have a lot of shop access.

As an advanced approach I would chose ammonia borane for storing hydrogen, which releases it, if heat is applied.
Ammonia borane - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
'It is more hydrogen-dense than liquid hydrogen and also able to exist at normal temperatures and pressures'.
It can be used as an energy source for planes: (small prototype)

and as well for cars.
You might need a fuel cell stack , here are different choices for the use with methanol or hydrogen:

electric
For electric, look into the lifepo4 (lithium iron phosphate) batteries. 2-3 times the capacity of a lead acid battery for the same size, rated at WAY MORE cycles, etc... and it is compatible with Bedini's charging technology at Tesla Chargers | World's Most Efficient, Effective & Advanced Battery Chargers - For solar use, I think a few mods are needed in the chargers but the plug in ones can do it off the shelf. I'll have to check.
Bedini's technology is not compatible with lithium ion so lifepo4 is the way to go.Sincerely,
