Here's my from-the-gut reason why I think it must be so.
Consider the design of a capacitor. More surface area means larger capacitance. That one is easy. Putting the plates closer together (making the volume of the dielectric smaller) also increases the capacitance. Hmmm. Less is more. That could only mean one thing. Less space must equate to more counter-space. Hence, the so-called charge we think of lives in a different dimension.
Yes, no, maybe so?
