an experiment in Venice, Thide and his Italian colleagues have transmitted two signals at the same time, on the same frequency, over a distance of 442 meters (1450ft). Pictured on the right is the antenna that the team used. No, your eyes don�t deceive you: To create these radio vortices, all you have to do is make a cut in a standard parabolic reflector and twist it slightly. If you imagine a corkscrew of radio signals being continuously transmitted from the outside edge of the antenna, that�s effectively what�s occurring. On the receiving end, there are two �normal� TV antennae (Yagi-Uda) set apart by the same angle as the break in the transmitter. These antennae �decode� the vortex, and voila: Two radio signals transmitted over the same frequency.

It's been known for a long time that light travels in spirals or helical paths.
Light waves do not just fluctuate up and down or side to side, they spiral.
When we look at a magnified "light wave" from any side angle near 90 degrees from propagation
or a "wave form", what we see as a 2 dimensional representation is a wave like pattern.
But the actual path is helical or spiral. If we look at the light "wave's" path
"magnified" from in line with it's direction of propagation we would see a circle.

A helix is a vortex now ?

The team of researchers that produced infinite-capacity wireless vortex beams has deployed the same technology in optical fibers, using twisted laser beams to transfer data at 1.6 terabits per second over 1.1 kilometers (0.68 miles).

In both cases, the principle at play is called orbital angular momentum. In essence, electromagnetic radiation � whether it�s a wireless signal or a laser pulse � can have two kinds of twist: spin angular momentum (SAM) and orbital angular momentum (OAM). If you picture the Earth, SAM is equivalent to the planet spinning on its axis (producing the day/night cycle), and OAM is equivalent to us rotating around the Sun (producing seasons). In every commercial network topology, we only modify the SAM.

What Bo Thide of the Swedish Institute of Space Physics proved in 2012, however, was that we could modify both the SAM and the OAM. In effect, this creates a three-dimensional wave that�s modulated in one plane (SAM), but also twisted through another (OAM), creating a vortex or corkscrew (pictured right) As you can probably imagine, by shifting from a 2D wave to 3D, you gain a huge amount of spectral efficiency. In fact, if you have enough control over the OAM, you can effectively transmit infinite amounts of data on the same carrier frequency. This is what led to a group of researchers, headed by Andy Willner at the University of Southern California, to create a wireless network link capable of 2.5 terabits per second � or about 40GB (one Blu-ray disc) per second.

Now, Willner has teamed up with Siddharth Ramachandran, a fiber expert at Boston University, to implement orbital angular momentum in a fiber-optic network. This is slightly more difficult, as optical fibers tend to be single-mode � i.e. they can only transport a single beam of light. OAM requires that you transmit multiple beams of light (or radio waves), twisted like a corkscrew to prevent interference between the beams. To get around this, the researchers used a special kind of fiber that has had special chemicals added to it (doped) to create different, spatially separated pathways. Using a single color of light with four twists, the team obtained a data rate of 400Gbps; using 10 colors, each with two twists, 1.6Tbps was achieved.

Thanks for this post Ken. I sent it to our four guys in the IT department where I work. They're forever upgrading cables, switches, servers, modems, bodums... Looks like this will be a whole new revolution.

I can't help but think of Mehran Keshe's work with what he calls "Magnetic Plasmatic Fields" to produce energy and light (as a by-product, which he maintains is intrinsically related to magnetism). I also think about Stubblefield's Earth Batteries, and the reports that the ground around the SEBs often glowed at night.

Clearly, there is a link, and perhaps this link is the dielectric. More food for my starving mind.b

Are all three the same wavelength and frequency?

Am I to understand that a near infinite number of other (non-quantum) values are possible? At one and the same frequency? Did the research demonstrate this is already possible or yet to be realized? Thanks for sharing your understanding of this technology. It is obviously new territory for me.

In conventional physics, is this not a quantum attribute called electron spin?

If possible, try and help me understand this.

As amazing THIS technology (above) is,......I have been given privy information (its already been patented) on an upcoming device to be revealed in October of this year that will make this technology above look pathetic by comparison.

Ive seen it, Ive seen it work, its been patented and Ive promised not to disclose any details about it until after its unveiling in October.

Also consider the J.J. Thomson concept of the "electron" (his own discovery). Thomson considered the electron the terminal end of one unit line of dielectric induction.

Recently scientists discovered that light can be twisted like a corkscrew around its direction of travel. This unusual quantum feature allows photons to whirl around in a vortex, even when no external force is applied to the beam. Now researchers from the RIKEN Frontier Research System in Wako have shown that the same kind of vortices can be produced in beams of dielectric rayss1, promising novel applications.
�When a light or dielectric rays beam is twisted, waves at the central axis cancel each other out forming a dark core, like at the eye of a storm (Fig. 1),� says RIKEN scientist Franco Nori, also with the University of Michigan in the USA. His RIKEN collaborator Sergey Savel�ev, also at Loughborough University in the UK, adds: �As the photons or dielectric rays spin around the axis, they carry orbital angular momentum that can rotate an electric dipole.�

To explain these properties, the researchers solved the Schr�dinger equation of quantum mechanics for a twisting beam of dielectric rays. This produced new dynamical equations that are highly analogous to those found for light. The similarities arise because the twisting angular momentum of the dielectric rays interacts with their forward motion in the same way that intrinsic angular momentum (spin) interacts with the motion of photons, which is known as spin-orbit coupling.

The theory implies that vortices in dielectric rays beams have all the features of optical vortices. This reinforces the famous concept of wave-particle duality, which states that all particles have a wave associated with them. More importantly, it means that the useful applications of optical vortices could be replicated at much shorter wavelengths.

In practice, optical vortices can be made by passing a laser beam through a fork-shaped computer generated hologram. Dielectric rays-beam vortices could be produced in a similar fashion, using a thin crystal plate with a dislocation. Such vortices could power tiny nanomotors and nano-engines, or could be used in telecommunications by storing information in the optical vorticity, or the intensity of twisting. The vorticity is robust against perturbations, so this potential future technology could reduce the loss of information during optical communications.

Furthermore, dielectric rays vortices are predicted to cause a shift of the dielectric rays beam at right angles to an electric field. �The unique dielectric rays microscope developed by Akira Tonomura's group, also at RIKEN, could observe this unusual effect,� says Nori. �Such work would considerably expand the textbook analogy between matter and waves which Tonomura helped to establish in pioneering experiments.�

I guess the obvious question is what makes you think you would be invited to their oasis in space, you do think you would be invited don't you...why?.

Your posts are entertaining and all but in reality the things that matter are tangible and make a real difference. As I inferred in a previous post, you think your smart? How about I cut your power and gas and we will see just how smart you really are.
That is the reality we live in and I think it would be really hard for anyone to feel all smart and superior sitting in a cold dark house with no water.

I guess it might help to mention I'm a Power Engineer, a specialist in energy systems including application and control. Were the people in the power plants who keep your lights on, the people in process plants who provide fuel for your car, gas for your house etc... and we also work in large scale water treatment facilities. So if you ever have any questions concerning Energy and the reality of why you can live like you do I would be happy to answer them for you.

TA, That's awesome sounding news. I'll take faster with less power any day despite some other concerns posted. They must have some hella' fast computers to be testing those speeds. My own computer is very fast and even my RAM disk maxes out around 8 Gigabytes per second. I'll assume this technology will be used in computers also to speed them up otherwise current hard disk speeds would probably put a serious bottleneck on those breakneck speeds
