  • Came to build...

    Greetings all;

Well, its taken a bit to scan the postings, but I finally got to this point.

I've purchased a Razor motor on Ebay, and will get a couple more. (I just gotta try modifying one UFO style. - has anyone tried that?)

Wire, I have or can get. (A local motor rewind shop gives me a good deal on wire, so I recommend checking with these folks if you have one nearby.)

Batteries, I have several now. When I was working on the 3BGS, I couldn't come up with a 'bad' battery that would work. Then, I got onto other projects. Now, I'm really glad to have found this thread! (I'll revisit the 3BGS thread and get my setup dusted off and back on the bench this coming weekend.)

Flywheel: I have two steel ones made for use on a Bedini Window Motor, so these can be re-purposed. Or, the BWM might be reconfigured as a generator, motor, or mogen.

Just a thought on a light weight generator: The Fisher & Paykel motor reconfig: https://www.google.com/?gws_rd=ssl#q...turbine+wiring

Also here: YourGreenDream - Hobby alternative energy production education and resources. Fisher and Paykel Smart Drive generators for windmills, windpower and hydro generators.

Ok, now I need to print off the PDF, clean out a place to work, and get going.

      Glen,
Yes some have built the Ufopolitics type using my1016's by extending the case.

I've built the Ufo using a treadmill motor and incorporated it with this 3BGS and got interesting results. But it was my first, so not a good build and didn't last long.

Matt's design seems durable and promising from my own small tests. That's why I'm anxiously awaiting his generator design.

      Good times,

      • Flywheel source

        Greetings:

Forgot to mention: I have had very good luck getting things machined or built at local vocational centers. Generally, at little to no cost. At worst, I had to donate time as a an adviser to the program. (Two meetings per year and get a free meal.)

I had a longer shaft made for an Imperial P66 UFO armature. Made it double ended. Figured to try the same with a Razor motor. Longer shaft means more room for a flywheel. (Have more than one made of different thicknesses so that weight can be added or subtracted.)

        • GlenWV,
I have built a couple of the UFO motors using the MY1016 razor scooter motor as the basis for the build. I got some of the best results I have ever had on a 3BGS run using that motor. The 3rd battery was charging, I was running a 12 volt fan off it as a load, and my primaries were charging also.

BUT, the motor has NO TORQUE running on 12 volts. UFO said it is designed to run on higher voltage. That may be true. I saw what I needed to see. I need a motor that will run on low voltage, has torque, and can also produce as a generator to help self run. Matt's motor design does that.

            Greetings:

Thanks for sharing your results. I appreciate it.

I reckon to build Matt's config, but was wondering how the UFO thing might play. I was thinking four coils, each spanning a magnet....

Anyway, I'll learn more when the motors come in and are on the bench.

            Thanks again,

            • Four coils each spanning a magnet

Hi Glen, That is exactly what I did to modify Matts' original wind.
His is basically 2 coils wound 180 deg. apart. They span 5 pole faces.
Skip a pole and do the same wind ,skip 1 more and do the same wind.....
Spin that up and it puts out pretty good , but you still loose.
I think the answer lies in the chemistry of any battery.
Also the very abrupt interuption of flow, causes disturbance of the field around us.
If one had enough dead batteries It would run forever ,but would take up alot of room.
Batteries empty in stages, top is first , then second refills top, empties, then third refills second and top.
              Just saying..artv

              • It's nice to know we're going to have several folks replicate the motor and generator combination. I will be working on my gen this weekend. Both the BIG one, and the small one that Matt will be having you guys build. I am still in the process of moving up to the new place, but next weekend is my FINAL moving weekend. After that I will be full time at the new house, and getting my shop all arranged and working on this stuff again. It has been a pain having tools and things at three different locations. It seems like every time I need something it is at the place I'm not. Today a bought a whole bunch of hand tools that I already have, but I needed them TODAY, and the ones I have are 2 hours and 15 minutes away.

Tomorrow I pick up another Mite E Lite Generator on my way up to the new house, and I will spend the next three or four days there working on getting my shop in order and building the smaller generator. Will test the Mite E Lite to see how it does under load, and take it apart to look and see how the coils compare to the one I already have. I also need to test some metglass core material, so will need to wrap a coil and test it. That will be interesting. Lots to do, and no time to do it in. It's a good thing I am retired! I've been retired for about 7 years now, and I am busier now than I ever was when I was working for a living. Maybe I should get a job. Then I might have some free time again.

                • Are there certian materials that we are for sure going to need that we might start looking around for in preparation for Matt's release?

                  • No problem. I don't do anything in a hurry anyway.

                    • My MY1016 pulse motor

                      Matt,

I followed your instructions and videos on winding my pulse motor.

I was able to knock off the manufacturer's blue epoxy and take the windings off without having to cut them out. I did end up breaking the windings - but salvaged all the fiberglass spacers and used them to hold my windings in.

It was tricky getting it back together - I used some of my wife's thin ribbon to hold the brushes back like in your video.

When I connected the motor to my batteries - I sometimes had to move the armature a little as it doesn't always start up. Is that one of the reasons Dave has mentioned using a flywheel?

                      • Strangest I've ever seen

Was just in the shop running the 3BGS and connected a HV transformer low side to the 36 volt Matthew modified generator which is coupled to a 24 volt prime mover. There is a diode on one side of the generator leads to the low side.

There is only one good battery and one bad battery connected pos to pos. Prime mover is connected to the neg of good and bad batteries.

Bad battery has 200 watts of bulbs across it as a load.

The high side of the transformer has one wire connected to ac of fwbr and other wire has spark gap using a small broken lamp led then connected to ac of fwbr. DC side of fwbr goes to good battery.

As it is running the good battery is dropping a tenth of a volt as usual. I reach over to touch the motor and generator to check if either is heating up- I get a shock from the generator!!!

I connected the fluke meter neg to back of genny and pos is already on positive of fwbr. I've never seen this before. Negative and positive readings and high spikes to 200 volts dc. So I connected a jumper to neg of battery to back of the generator and the battery starts to charge.

I will check the gen for a short also the meters battery tomorrow. Made some videos so will post to YouTube also.

Sorry just got a little surprised with this and thought I'd share. May be just a generator short. But if so how is the meter flip flopping so much?

Any advise to clear my fuzzy head,

                        • No short

                          Thanks Matt,
I opened the generator and checked wires, rotor, casing, brush connectors - there are no short in it.

So after connecting it back in the setup -the same effects still happen.

Has there been any strange readings from this modification before?

The gen is generating voltage, there is low amp draw on the prime mover- 1.8 amps.

                          Ok, anyway still interesting,

                          • Clarification

My mom did let me on the Merry-Go-Round, well, sometimes anyway! But it was sitting on the floor watching those clothes go round and round in the washer that got me hooked on flywheels. That, and what I have seen with the big gen I built. It's amazing how long it will spin after you kill the power when you have that flywheel hooked up.

                            • Still strange

Yes that seems possible. But why doesn't all that just leave via the connection wires? The motor/generator combo changes speed as the meter flips to negative voltage readings. Then returns to same normal speed.

It kept main battery charged up to 12.6 volts for 4 or 5 hours and never lost a tenth of a volt. Then suddenly within 30 ~ 45 seconds dropped down to 10.4 volts!! That I've never seen happen. Not in the good battery at lest .So I turned it off, don't want to ruin a good battery.

Suppose to rain tomorrow, so will do a long run again and see if same happens.

Made video's but don't to YouTube them until get something useful.

                              • voltage drop

Hi WTM, I have a battery that did the same thing awhile back. I still have that battery and still use it. Were you trying to put charge into? I was using the motor to turn a smaller motor and was feeding the front battery with charged caps and blocking diodes so the battery could only accept cap dumps.
But then I changed things around trying different stuff and haven't seen it since.
Sorry not much help just to let you know.
