    Morgan 0049

    Sept. 13, 1903

    Dear Mr Morgan:-
Many years ago I was at your door with this invention,
but I did not go in thinking that it would be useless.
I know have another one, which is a hundred times more im-
portant and valuable. Help me to complete this work and you will
    see.

    Ever yours most faithfully

    Dear Sir:-
I hope I did not impress you as asking for ___________
contribution to business. It was simply a business proposition.
My last undertaking has returned more than two dozen times
the original investment and this, in strong hand, should do better
    still.
I had the same difficulty in convincing the world of the
practicability of my invention referred to in the editorial in-
closed. The present one in incomparably more important and valu-
    able.
Apologizing for the intrusion, I remain,

    Very respectfully yours,

    Dear Mr. Morgan:-
There is no day without such notices as the inclosed.
All this power can be easily transmitted by my new patented pro-
cesses almost without loss and to any distance. If you will give
me your earnest support in this you can have a greater income from
these inventions than Rockefeller from his oil-wells. And you will
have at your mercy the cutthroats who are trying to undo your work
and get your royal mantle. I only need to complete this plant, Mr.
Morgan, the rest will take care of itself.

    Yours most faithfully,

What is missing in the Morgan files up to 0100 now? I know I skipped some of the washed out ones and one dark one. I do OK at pulling the text out of the dark ones with a photo editor. No such luck with the washed out ones yet. And maybe I could be pointed to some handwritten ones. Someone who is good with GIMP or Photoshop could really help cleaning some of these up. I have had my success on the dark ones with Nero photo editor because it is easier to use if you do not know what you are doing.

Thanks again for the files Ernst, Dr Green, and everyone else involved

    • Great work, Jeff and Michel!
I am having a hard time trying to keep up with the two of you!

      @Jeff,
I saw your transcript of 48 and thought I had already done that one, but I could not find my transcript. Maybe I only read it and it remained in my head for some reason.
Anyway, you are entering a zone now where many letters have already been done, so be careful not to spend your time on those!
The Morgan-file is up to date for letters 50 up to the end.
Meaning that the following have already been transcribed:
      52, 54, 56, 59-80, 84-90, 97-99

If you want to specialize in dark files, there are many telegrams that are almost impossible to read. Also the Morgan checks are usually very dark. Some are extra difficult because they are also handwritten (Morgan 129, for example). There is a sort of dark-age from Morgan 102 up until 144, after that there is only an occasional dark image (219-222 and 241).

The really dark images are G Scherff (1) 50, Westinghouse Co. 122
The following may be possible to recover:
      Scherff (1) 289-293, 297
      Scherff (2) 73, 144, 151, 152, 157, 166, 290
      RUJ (1) 7, 8
      RUJ (2) 72, 109
      Westinghouse Co. 69, 70, 73, 273

Even if you only enhance the image such that it becomes possible to read it, that would be a great help already.

      Ernst.

        Dear Mr. Tesla:

Many thanks for your letter of the 18th instant. I am very glad indeed, to learn of your programs.

In a recent letter I wrote you about the income tax report for the Nikola Tesla Company, which should be filed by March 1st. Perhaps the matter has been attended to by yourself, and I merely mention it again to make that it is not overlooked.

        Yours respectfully,

        My dear Mr. Scherff:

You will be glad to know that there will be incorporated very shortly the Tesla Osone Co., and also the Tesla Selling Co.. This latter concern will be in the hands of a very experienced and practical man and I have no doubt that it will be very helpful in the introduction of my inventions which will be put on the market through the Osone Co.. and the Electro-Theraputic Co., of which you already know.

There are other very favorable developments taking place but they have not yet assumed definite shape. As you see the progress is good but still too slow for me.

        Yours very truly,

        February 22nd, 1910.

        My dear Mr. Scherff:

I have duly received your letter recommending Mr. Egloff and have looked into his invention. While, I am not well posted on the subject, I can readily see that with proper management, the device might prove commercially very successful as there is unquestionably a demand for it. I shall be glad to assist your young friend in any way I can.

Referring to your letter of Feby 21st, I have, of course, not done anything in regard to the Tax report for the Nikola Tesla Co., and shall be obliged to you if you will let me know what is to be done. So far as I recall, I have mailed to you all the papers I received from Albany.

I am greatly interested in my new Electro-Therapeutic instrument which we are getting out. We have just received the rubber and metal pieces as they come from the manufacturers and they are very satisfactory indeed. It is probable that within a few weeks a complete sample instrument will be ready when, of course, any number can be produced at short notice. I have reserved myself the pleasure of giving you one as soon as practicable, believing that it will do you and Mrs. Scherff a lot of good, unless you have no electric supply circuit in your home, in which case, it will be necessary to move into other quarters.

        Yours sincerely,

        George Scherff, Esq.,

        Dear Mr. Tesla:

I beg to acknowledge a receipt of your letters of Feb. 21st and 22nd, and thank you for the attention given to Mr. Egloff.

That you will soon be ready to sell your instruments is very agreeable news, indeed. I had been at the point of requesting you to let me have the use of one of your apparata, as I believe it would greatly benefit my little girl, who has been ill since several months.

As regards the tax matter, what I referred to was the new income tax. I have made up the report and enclose it herewith for your signature. The same should be mailed to the Collector of the Internal Revenue, Customer House, New York City, so that it will reach there by March 1st.

        Yours respectfully,

        Geo. Scherff

        My dear Mr. Scherff:

I am sending you, under enclosure, a blank which the Journal of Commerce desires me to fill out for use in their “ 300 year History of New York”. As you know that I have never done such things and at the same time that a request from a Commercial Journal should be complied with for practical reasons, I shall be obliged to you if you will fill in whatever you know of my curious career, abstaining from praise as much as you can.

Referring to your letter of February 25th which was partially answered in my personqal interview with you the other day, I shall certainly be very glad to send you the instrument as soon as it is ready, and hope that it will benefit your little girl. In regard to the tax matter, I have already written you.

        My dear Mr. Scherff:

I was a little alarmed to read the enclosed, in view of the fact that the selling company has not complied with the requirements of the laws recently passed, but I understand that more than 40% of corporations have done the same. Will you please take the matter up with Mr. McClean?

I have thought over your remarks in regard to the effect of the selling company on the royalties due to the Company and I believe that there will be no diminution but, on the contrairy, an increase of the income through the selling company. At least, we all think so.

        Dear Mr. Tesla:

I beg to acknowledge receipt of your letter of Marching 4th, enclosing clippings referring to the new corporation tax. Of course, your Company will not have to pay any taxes, as there has been no income. As regards to the delay in filing the report, I not, that a great many corporations are in a similar position, and I hope that the Government will be lenient with those.

I share just completing my 450 H. P. Turbo-pump which, if it works satisfactorily, will be installed at Depew, N. Y., near Buffalo. Since my last writing, I have also made remarkable progress with the little steam turbine at Bridgeport, which now is capable of developing 100 H>P>, and you will appreciate the advance when you recall that it is the same machine which I mentioned to you long ago and which at that time developed some 15 or 20 H>P>. There is no doubt in my mind but that I can produce a 500 H>P> machine, weighing no more than 50 lbs and even then this would be only about 50% of the theoretical performance.

              Dear Mr. Tesla:

Mr. Snider has suddenly been called away to the Company's mine in Louisiana, and regretted very much that he could not see your turbine before leaving. He hopes to have the opportunity after his return, which will be in about two weeks, if you have not completed other arrangements at that time.

I am sorry, I cannot send you more agreeable news.

              Yours respectfully,

I was quite prepared to learn from your letter of the 25th just received, that unavoidable business had detained Mr. Snider. I will be pleased to see him at any time.

We have about completed the large turbo-pump and it is possible that when he returns it may still be at the works.

              My dear Mr. Scherff:

The Journal of Commerce has been pressing me for a personal sketch which they want to publish. I have reluctantly promised to furnish it and would like you to help me out. I think that something like the one you wrote for “WHO'S WHO” a trifle enlarged to meet their requirements for space would do. I would be much obliged to you if you would do it at an early date.

Since our last correspondence I have heard nothing from you and anticipate that Mr. Snider has not yet returned.

It will interest you to know that we have managed to put together the turbo-pump on Saturday but it is not yet in definite shape. However, it will be in running condition before the end of this week and I trust that my expectations will be realized.

              Sincerely yours,

              My dear Mr. Scherff:

You called me up yesterday at an inopportune moment, otherwise I would have set aside other arrangements to confer with you.

In order to save unnecessary trouble, I will supplement reluctantly, of course, a few data for the article which you have written some years ago for the Hammersly publication. It would only been necessary to change the wording somewhat, leave out some unimportant remarks and bring it up to date.

For reasons which you will appreciate, I would suggest that you mention the Elliot Cresson Gold Medal which was awarded to me in recognition of the work presented to the Franklin Institute and National Electric Light Association in 1893, in which wireless transmission was one of the most important chapters. Another very important work which should be mentioned are my discoveries of novel radiations or emanations, which I published in a series of papers in the Electrical Review, New York, from 1896 to 1898 and which long after were identified with radium. As you well remember, I announced all the salient phenomena and gave the theory two or three years before anybody believed in the possibility until Madam Curie announced her discovery in which she virtually repeated what I had published except that she attributed the actions to a new element while I pronounced them as general.

In referring to my participation in Scientific Societies, Institutions and Academies, honorary or regular member, it would be well to state that I am a life member of the British Association and a member of the Royal Institution, as these are probably the most renowned scientific technical institutions.

In mentioning degrees, you will, of course, recall that I am an M.A. of Yale, an L.L.D. of Columbia and, among other thing, a Doctor es Science of the Polytechnic School of Vienna. This distinction was conferred upon me in acknowledgement of my discoveries of the principles of wireless transmission and power.

The most difficult thing probably will be to bring the article up to date by reference to my activities since that article was published. You will know that several Companies have since been formed for commercial exploitation of various inventions. Among these unquestionably the most important is my discovery of a new mechanical principle which I have embodied in a great variety of machines such as reversible gas and steam turbines, pumps, blowers and air compressor, water turbines, mechanical transformers and transmitters of power, hot air engines, etc. This principle, among other things, enables the production of prime movers which can develop ten horse power for each pound of weight, if not more. By their application to aerial navigation, and propulsion of vessels on water, high speeds are practicable, and the results so far obtained are very promising.

At the proper place, you might also fittingly remark, since it is true, that I have a number of discoveries in the electrical field which have not as yet been announced but which I believe to be more important than any electrical work that I have so far done.

I am very sorry that I am compelled to make such statements on paper but I do so simply because I

                  My dear Mr. Scherff:

You will be interested to know that we have made some tests with the turbo-pump which, considering the conditions existing at the plant in Bridgeport, were very satisfactory, at least, so I was told by those present. We are planning to set the outfit up some where in this city where it will work to far better advantage. By that time, I shall also have two more turbines ready, one of which I expect will be a little wonder.

Trusting that you are getting along well, I remain,

                  Yours sincerely,

Many thanks for your kind letter. I hope to have an opportunity of seeing your turbine when it is set up in this city.

The last time I called at your office, you spoke of keeping the company's books there. I shall be glad to deliver them any time of your convenience .

                  My dear Mr. Scherff:

I regret to note from your letter of the 15th, just received, that your father is still suffering. Owing to an unfortunate delay in regard to the manufacture of the small instruments, they are not yet on the market but I think that they soon will be. I shall try to comply with your request, if at all possible. Please let me know when your father is sailing to Europe.

As I have a safe in this office, it would be desirable to keep the books here and I shall be obliged to you if you will bring them on at your convenience.

I am hard at work to make possible the installment of three different machines in this city, of which one is the large turbo-pump. When you see the exhibit, it will agreeably surprise you.

                    Dear Mr. Tesla:

In order to obtain data regarding the pump used at the King of the U.S.A., I am obliged to seek information from Mr. Whiten, Secretary and Manager, who is Mr. Prasch's son-in-law. He stated that the company did not contemplate the installation of any raw machinery in the near future and he thought that therefore Mr. Prasch would not be into such at the present time.

Your electro-therapeutic instrument works excellently with alternating current, and my father is delighted to have the opportunity of using it.

                    Yours respectfully,

I am very glad to know, from your letter of the 27th, that the instrument works well on the alternating current and hope that your father will be benefited by its use. The high frequency currents are certainly a wonderful tonic and have done me personally a great deal of good.

I shall be obliged to you if you will obtain data in regard to the pump referred to, as well as some idea of the type employed.

I wish to acknowledge receipt of your letters of the 19th and 21st instant. I had already read Dr. Lilienthal's troubles. Shortly after the Roentgen rays were discovered, when apparatus for producing them was still rare, you made a Roentgen photograph for Dr. Lilienthal of the leg of one of his patients, which had been broken. The patient was a little boy.

                        My dear Mr. Scherff:

Replying to your inquiry by phone of today, I have gone over my papers in the desk and cannot find the document you refer to. I shall examine what I have here at my leisure tomorrow and should I find anything bearing on the subject I shall forward same to you.

It will please you to know that I have just about completed my apparatus at the Garvin Machine Company and am about to transport the turbines to the Edison plant where they will be shown in operation. If the results are good, my long fought battle will be won.

Not hearing from you in the matter of the Income Tax Report, I procured a blank from, which I have filled in and send herewith. I did not know the amount of tax you have paid last year, and this sum should be filled in on the two lines that are left blank.

It is important, I understand, that the report be filed by March 1st as otherwise a heavy fine will be imposed.

                        Dear Mr. Tesla:

On the Tax Report I filed this afternoon the government official required the signature of three different officials of the corporation and therefore I signed as secretary. The Revenue Office for your District is at 16th Street and Third Ave., I was informed at the Custom House, and I filed the Report there.

As regards the reports of the other two companies, I explained that the officers are out of town who should sign the document and asked for an extension of time. I was told that this should have been applied for sooner and not at the last moment, as there had been ample time for preparing the report. However, it would be satisfactory, if any two officers of the company signed the report and letter be accompanied by an affidavit that the President and Treasurer are out of town. In answer to my inquiry if there would be any penalty for delay, as the companies were not operating and not subject to any tax, I was told that this would have to be decided by the Treasury Department in Washington.

Under these circumstances it might be best to file the reports with as little delay as possible. I shall be glad to ..... to Tesla Correspondence #439

                          My dear Mr. Scherff:

Since receipt of your letter of March 1st, relative to the reports, I have been so much taken up by pressing work that I was unable to write you before this.

We have installed at the Edison plant my small turbine and have tested the same with great success in the presence of a number of prominent men who have been very much impressed with it. It is probable that within the next few days my large outfit, comprising two turbines and some measuring apparatus in connection, will also be installed there and I am anticipating a veritable triumph, judging from the results I have already secured. Just as soon as this important work is done, I shall devote myself to the company matters and trust that you will be able to work out a satisfactory solution of the difficulty.

                          Dear Mr. Tesla:

I have to advise you of an unpleasant occurrence that happened to me yesterday; namely, I was served with a subpoena to appear as a witness against you on May 19th on behalf of the N. Y. & F. J. Telephone Co.. You will no doubt remember a mysterious inquiry made of you some time ago as to my present whereabout, and it now turns out that the inquiry was made by these people. I do not know just what they want of me, I only remember that I wrote them several letters from Wardenclyffe regarding their account.

Since I last called on you I have made a trip to Mexico. It is not quite confortable down there these days.

Mrs. Hawkins called on me the other day and I was glad to learn from him that you are making good progress in your work.

                          Yours respectfully,

                          May 14th, 1911.

                          My dear Mr. Scherff:

I was very sorry to learn from your letter of May 11th that you are going to be bothered with the nasty affair.

As you will remember, the telephone company agreed to put up a line for me for which I was to pay a certain sum. Instead of giving me a special line, they attached six or seven other subscribers on the same wire so that, as you will probably recall, it was often impossible to use the line. Under the circumstances it does not seem reasonable for them to ask the amount stipulated but rather to charge me for the time at the rate accorded to other customers. I see no reason why I should pay a large sum of money when the others are getting the telephone service for a few dollars.

I heard some time ago that you had gone to Mexico and was apprehensive that something might happen to you. It certainly is not advisable to go among these excited people at this time.

                          Yours sincerely,

                          Dear Mr. Tesla:

Mr. Lowenstein has just made a careful test of the insulating qualities of the wax, of which I showed you a sample, and he tells me that a layer five thousandths of an inch thick withstood a pressure of 8,000 volts. He considers this result extraordinary.

I am very anxious to get in touch with some one who can make use of the wax, as this will aid me greatly in financing my little business. If it is convenient for you, I should be greatly obliged for a letter of introduction to one of the officers of the Okonite Company, as I think it will be possible to do some business with them.

                          Yours respectfully,

Please accept my thanks for the check. I feel myself recompensed princely for the small service.

                              Dear Sir:

Further in remark to the wax which I tested for you.

The sample tested broke down on 14,900 volts, the thickness of the wax being .011 inch. This insulating quality of the wax is extraordinary, as the Canauba wax which is up to this day --- extensively use for practical insulation, has less than one third of the dielectric strength of your sample submitted.

For your information, I made the test with Canauba wax of exactly the same thickness, is being .011 inch, and under the very same conditions as in the test above referred to. Canauba wax broke down at 4,500 volts.

I shall continue to make comparative tests with other insulating materials now in general use, which will furnish a means for comparing the insulating quality of the Mexican Vegetable Wax with that of other insulation materials.

                              Sincerely yours,
                              F. Lowenstein

You will be glad to know that my vacuum pump is turning to be a splendid success. It is one of the most valuable things that could be invented. One of its application will be for the manufacture of ice, for which use it commands itself on account of its ideal simplicity and high vacuum obtainable. The whole ice machine will comprise an electric motor and pump directly connected.

                              Dear Mr Tesla:

It is now past the time when annual State Tax Report are due for filing. If you have received the blanks for the report of the Nikola Tesla Company and will send them to me, I shall be glad to prepare and file the report. Kindly let me know at the same time, if there have been any changes in the affairs of the Company, and that I may be able to give correct information.

My son returned a few days ago from a trip on the new battleship Wyoming, on which Mr. Lowenstein installed his first wireless set. You will no doubt be glad to hear that the performance of the apparatus are excellent; the officers declared they had not seen anything like it. I know that this result is due to the wonderful properties of the principle employed and its intelligent application.

My Mexican enterprise is unfortunately still in status quo for want of funds.

                              Yours respectfully,

                              My dear Mr. Scherff:

I duly received your letter of January twelfth but I was unable to reply before this.

The State Tax Blanks have been received by me and I have been thinking about the reports for some time. I will look them up and forward them to you as soon as possible. There has been no change in the affairs of the Nikola Tesla Company, fortunately or unfortunately as may pan out.

I am sorry to know that you have not yet made great progress in your Mexican enterprise and trust that my affairs will shape themselves in such a way that I may be able to do what I would like to do in its connection.

It has given me great pleasure to know that Mr. Lowenstein is succeeding. He is much abler than the rest of the wireless men who are in the field and I was prepared for the result.

                              Sincerely yours,

                                Dear Mr. Tesla:

I beg to acknowledge receipt of your letter of March 9th, referring to the filing of the4 Income Tax Report of the Nikola Tesla Company. In reply I would suggest that you send with the report a letter addressed to the U. S. Internal Revenue Collector, stating that on account of the absence of the Company's officers it was impossible to have the report signed. Absence or illness of officers seems to be the only excuse that will be accepted for the delay in filing the report.

                                Respectfully,
