    My dear Sir:

I am sending you by express, a short --- --- of cable through which passed the first current generated in the plant of the Niagara Falls Power Co., at Niagara, April 16th, 1895.

We have furnished similar souvenirs to the Directors of the Octarect Construction Co., some of the officers of our own Company, to Commodore Melville and Mr. Habirshaw, and feeling that you are particularly interested, have much pleasure in forwarding one to you. Please accept this within the best compliment of the Westinghouse Company.

    Mr. Tesla,

    ... been over-looked.

You may be interested to know that the Patent Office has allowed me a patent covering the principal elements of the organization of switch board apparatus, which I trust will be useful to Westinghouse Company in securing additional orders for extension of the plant.

It was a great pleasure to see you in Pittsburgh and I trust that your next visit not be so long delayed as was the last one.

    Very truly yours,

      My dear Mr. Tesla:

One of my friends is in charge of the Adams Mining property, an iron ore mine owned by the Rockefeller interests in Minnesota. They of course have a large number of operators and accidents are continually happening. They have a very progressive hospital and medical system in charge of a very capable physician, Dr. Moore by name. Dr. Moore wants to secure X ray apparatus which will enable him in case of an accident to a man to make a quick photograph of the injured parts, and from this determine as to the best method of procedure. If possible he would like to get a machine with an exposure of five minutes. It is the writer's recollection that you are interested in the manufacture of such machine. If my expression is correct will you kindly send me such circulars as you may have and advise me whether the pictures he desires are within the range of possibilities at the present stage of the art.

Thanking you in advance for your courtesy in this matter, I beg to remain,

      Yours truly,

      Arthur Harturell

        My dear Sir:

A friend of mine writes asking whether you would care to lecture at the Music Hall of the Carnegie Library, Pittsburgh. This will not be a gratis job, and I think if you would care to lecture they would pay you the usual compensation, the amount of which I do not know, but if you will consider the proposition I would be pleased to have you let me know and I will immediately put the proper party in communication with you. The question has been asked me and therefore I take the liberty of writing you with regard to same, so please do not hesitate to do just as you feel. There is no obligation on my part, and as I understand it, lectures given at the Hall are given for “revenue”.

If you will kindly let me know your views on this subject I will be very much obliged.

        ADDRESS ALL COMMUNICATIONS
        TO THE COMPANY.
        Sept. 23Rd, 1897.

        SUBJECT – INDUCTION MOTOR.

        Nikola Tesla, Esq.,
        46-48 e. Houston St.,
        New York City..

        My dear Sir:

In reply to your note asking data regarding a large induction motor, I take pleasure in sending you several photographs and an outline drawing giving the dimensions.

The primary winding consists of coils of thin copper strap. The motor is started by applying a low voltage received through transformers. The line current for starting at half the full load torque is just about equal to the normal full load current, and the starting torque can be increased with a corresponding increase in line current. The pulling out torque is over five or six times the normal full load torque. The power factor at half load is 91% and at full load is 96%.
The efficiency is 90% at half load and 91% at full load.

The motor has a no load speed of 375 revs. When running on a 3000 alternations circuit and the slip at full load is about 3%. The normal voltage on each of the two phases is 2200 volts. The maximum rise of temperature when carrying 500 H.P. is about 30 degrees C. The motor can readily 500 H.P. but is rated at 400 H.P. as the contract under which it was sold calls for a considerable overload capacity. Two of these motors have been made, the first of which has been in successful operation in the lighting station at Niagara Falls, driving the dynamos in the station, for the past month or so.

This is I believe the largest outgrowth of the induction motors on which we worked so energetically a number of years ago.

        Yours very truly,

        C. F. Scott
        CHIEF ELECTRICIAN

Though I cannot exactly take your view of the matter, considering that the larger portion of your APPARATUS WAS FURNISHED TO ME ON Mr. Schmidt's suggestion for the purpose of facilitating further investigations in the field of my system of polyphase power transmission, nevertheless appreciate very much your fairness and would beg you to transmit to Mrs. Westinghouse my thanks as well as my best wishes for success in the future.

                  My dear Dir:

I have been very glad to learn from your letter of March 3rd, just received, that my friends of the Westinghouse Company have found it possible to give you employment. When you came here I spoke to one or two friends about you, but there was little prospect then for a position.

I cannot conscientiously say that I could offer you anything better than you have at present and would advise you to stay there. Should you, however, be again in need of a position, you may call on me and I shall do my best to place you.

                  Yours very truly,

                  Gentlemen:

Your favor of May 17th, in the matter of the Trans-Mississippi International Exposition, has been received.

While I would prefer not to give undue prominence to my name, I would nevertheless do my utmost to comply with your wish, if I could do so efficiently. I have practically nothing suitable for exhibition beyond a large ring you forwarded to me, which is one of my close companions in the laboratory and from which I would not like to part. I presume that people nowadays will be far more interested in your splendid machinery than in my early apparatus.

                  Believe me to be,

                    Gentlemen:

Your very categorical reminder of Feb. 21Rst has been duly received and with the exception of its being premature, unnecessary and rather terse in expression, and implying the erroneous assumption that I was forgetful of assumed duties, it was appreciated and approved as an effort to discourage the objectionable habit of borrowing money.

Long ago I would have taken the pleasure of calling on you with reference to the agreeable cause of our last meeting, had it not been since that time engaged in psychological research, to which the recent utterances of my illustrious friend, Sir William Crooks, have prompt me. I am at variance with him and other philosophers as to the origin of mental states and transmission of mind efforts. According to my contention, there is no mental state which would not be the direct result of physical impressions, nor can there be any influence of mental efforts at a distance. This very experience with you has afforded me a striking illustration of the truth of my contentions. The other day I dreamt that I ...

... received from you a check for fifty thousand dollars, inclosed in a letter, the wording of which I cannot now exactly remember. I think, though, you stated that this sum was but a small compensation for services I had rendered to you for several years. I can distinctly recall that, among other things, you referred to me going to all my wealthy friends and enlisting their interest on your behalf at a time when you were in adversity, and to my great help in connection with your enterprises at Niagara, Massena and many other places, and if I do err, judging from your statements, you seemed actually overwhelmed, not to say distressed, at the amount of your indebtedness to me.

Now, on awaking, I began to investigate the origin of this singular dream, which gave me much pleasure for a moment, and after carefully examining all the old shelves in my memory, I satisfied myself thoroughly that, in accordance with my views, every particular of this dream was suggested by events which had actually occurred. Naturally I was greatly interested to see whether there was any truth to the doctrine of thought transmission, which my illustrious friend and some of his followers are now propounding. Of Course, while of the opposite opinion, I could not ignore the views of such high authorities, and my interest naturally rose to the point of excitement as the 28th of February drew near. I was ...

... about the height of my expectations, when your appreciated favor of the 21rst inst., before referred to, reached me. Its contents left no room for doubt in my mind, that there was not any thought transmission in this instance, and I was further strengthened in my view that the interaction and equivalency of efforts, which Spencer so eloquently propounds in his “First Principles” and which literally apply to the material world, do not hold good for mental states.

The recognition of these important truths and unification of the several corollaries and deductions derived from them, will forcibly lead to the foundation of a new system of philosophy, extremely materialistic in its general aspects and characteristics, but highly useful for all practical purposes, when thoroughly comprehended and rigorously applied in all dealings and relations with our fellow men. The current belief in the integral restoration of efforts not demonstrable by material evidences, which has heretofore often formed the basis of verbal understandings and agreements greatly to the advantage of those whose epidermis is developed to such unusual degree of thickness, which is peculiar to a certain class of low animals commonly known as crocodiles – will gradually disappear and will be finally restricted to those individuals who have a natural predisposition for the non-fulfillment of their ob- ...

It will become of absolute necessity for the furtherance of worldly interests and maintenance of friendly and harmonious relations to establish in advance exact, material and tangible equivalents for all our efforts and performances, and it will soon be recognized that a close observance of these principles will be conducive to a great success, while ignoring them will, sooner or later, bring about a disastrous failure.

Since some time, namely, I have been engaged in experiments in psychology, and you appeared to me to be a suitable medium. According to my theory your answer should have read: “The amount of your note, together with interest at six percent, is placed to your credit, and we are awaiting the pleasure of your draft on us for that amount.” Although my theory was not proven to my entire satisfaction, there was nevertheless a distinct effect, however small, which encourages me to further experimentation.

                          Gentlemen:

I beg to inform you that I have placed yesterday with Westinghouse, Church, Kerr & Co. an order for one of your direct connected generating sets comprising a Westinghouse compound engine to be used with or without conversing, as the case need be, and an alternating dynamo, 7200 alternations, two-phase, voltage from 440 to 500 volts. Kindly note that I require a two-phase machine, and also that I would like to have the two circuits --- insulated from each other. I mention this explicitly, an in a talk with Mr. Scott we spoke of a three-phase generator. I have spoken to him about the kind of conductors to be used and the insulation of the machine, which should be made with exceptional care.

You will greatly oblige me by giving the small engine with exciter, a starting transformer and some small motors and the large high tension transformers. In a few days these details will all be settled, and I shall communicate with Westinghouse, Church, Kerr & Co. and with him at the earliest possible moment.

Thanking you for the experimental transformer, which unfortunately has not yet reached ones my laboratory owing for some misunderstanding, I remain,

                          Yours very truly,

We have received your esteemed communication of the 27th inst., which we assume refers to the 200 K.W., engine --- generator, which you have ordered from as though Westinghouse, Church, Keer & Co.

We do not know why they should have informed you that we were ready to ship some of the apparatus as this is an error. We have been most seriously delayed in the shipment of your generator, --- --- --- ability to obtain necessary sheet steel for the armature punching. We are having much difficulty in obtaining sheet steel whatever, which condition is much exaggerated by the strike which has been prevailing for the last months. At the present time, we cannot advise you definitely when this generator will be ready for shipment, as we have no definite advice as to when the necessary sheet steel will be obtained.

We note your statement that you would probably desire to come to Pittsburgh and see your apparatus when said is placed on test, and to have definite advice from us when this generator will be ready for test, we shall be pleased to inform you, and hold the generator on test, subject to your wishes in this matter.

It will have to perform continually --- --- less than one-half horse-power. The clearance of 3/16 inch is essential, as there will be between the armature in an air tight space, while the field will be exposed and will work --- the --- silver cap. Although there is an appreciable loss through the ---, of course, --- effect, I have --- difficulty in --- a small motor under similar conditions. As you will see, the motor will have no ventilation and have a temperature, something like 80 --- in degrees.

That I would like you to --- be to furnish as simply the field and armature to fit on to my apparatus. If you will send --- operating on your machines, I will work out the rest and forward the sketch. I like to --- a --- of a motor performing one horse-power, I think that, even though the clearance of excessive --- the German silver cut between the armature and field, we shall get sufficient power, and I cannot think that it will require --- half horse-power.

You will greatly oblige me if --- the size of the machine and cross-sectional views of --- of these small motors, and I will communicate with you further as soon as possible.

Thanking you for the trouble you have taken and still made so for that you in connection with this matter, I remain,

                                New York City.

                                My dear Mr. Tesla:

I have your letter November 26th giving data supplemental to your letter November 22nd and I note that what you desire is simply the size of punchings of motors which correspond closely to the size in the sketch which accompanied your letter; further particulars you will furnish later.

The following are the dimensions of punchings for two sizes of motor. We are inclined to think that with the large air gap , namely 3/16”, which you say is essential, that it will be better to use the larger punchings for your motor.

                                ---------------------------------------------------------Small-------Large

                                Outside diameter, stationary primary,----------10 1/2”------15”

                                Inside--------------------------------------------------7 1/2”------10 1/2”

                                Air gap--------------------------------------------------1/32”--------3/64”

                                Outside diameter, rotating secondary,----------- 7 7/16”----10 13/32”

                                Inside diameter, rotating punchings,--------------5 1/2”-------7 7/16”

The secondary has partially closed slots for receiving rods which connect to end rings, thereby making a squirrel cage winding. The primary has open slots which are 1 5/16” in depth in the larger size and 1” in the smaller size. The large air gap which you require can be obtained by increasing the diameter of the outer part thus decreasing the depth of the slots just referred to. The ...

Till I reach #0170 of Westinghouse Co., I'll be swimming in washed out correspondence letters. Slow going and many breaks to rest the eyes. After each one, I look like this little fellow.
