      Dear Mr. Nesbitt:

I have just received from the American & British Mfg. Co. of Providence, R. I., letter dated yesterday, stating that the motor has not yet reached them. They are very much put out and have requested me to take this matter up with you immediately. Will you be kind enough to let me know whether the motor has been shipped and when.

I shall also be very much obliged to you if you will take the matter of the first motor up with the works, and inform me in regard to the nature of the trouble your experts have found.

      Yours very truly,

      My Dear Mr. Nesbitt:

In looking up your letter of April 1st, 1909, giving results of tests with the first motor, and also your blue print #29696 of efficiency and power curves, I can find no indication how the torque varies from starting until normal speed is attained. The motor speed curve is drawn as falling from left to right and if it would continue further to the right to include very low speeds, the torque would be apparently very great. I cannot reconcile the diagram in this respect with my experience, and assume that the curve would not hold good if the speed would be brought down below 3200 revolutions. I would like you to inform me whether I am right.

Your letter states that the “pull out torque” is 130 lbs. This term must have been introduced for shop convenience, and I only infer that it means the maximum torque which is obtained just prior to the falling out of the motor or radical departure from nearly synchronous speed. It may take place at something like 3200 revolutions.

I would like you to tell me, if possible, what the approximate torque is at various low speeds when the motor is started through the medium of the box. This would be desirable for me to know, as it would assist me in so proportioning the machine to be driven that it will suit best the conditions.

On this occasion, I would like to remind you that I am awaiting from you ...

        New York City.

        Dear Sir:

Referring to correspondence we have had in regard to 50 hp. Motor which the American & British Mfg. Co. returned to our factory for repairs we quote below report received from the factory on this motor.

“Our inspection of this machine indicated that the machine has been considerably overheated and overloaded; alas that the bearings have been given very little attention.

The bearings were found very much scored and have been sufficiently hot to cause the metal to run. This condition is undoubtedly due to insufficient oiling. The rotor of this machine has been throwing solder due to its being overheated. This, however, has not had any detrimental effect upon the primary winding.

We did not find that there is anything the matter with the auto starter; the contact of same was slightly scorched, but not enough to affect its operation.

We have rebabbitted the bearings, resoldered the rotor, cleaned up and put in operative condition, and we feel confident that these repairs, the motor is in as good condition as when it was first shipped.”

You will note from the above report that this motor has evidently been overloaded which caused trouble and very little attention was paid to the bearings and in order to get this machine to operate properly, you undoubtedly are aware that it requires some attention and we feel assured that if, the machine is given some attention when returned and not overloaded as it was ...

        Gentlemen:

I am much obliged to you for the information conveyed in your favor of June 18th. However, it may interest you to know that in careful break tests which were made at the works of the American & British Mfg. Co. at Providence, R. I., it was found that while the motor was capable of performing from 50 to 55 H. P., the product of the power and efficiency factors was .42, in other words, the motor took a considerable greater current than that given in your power and efficiency curves. This may have been possibly due to the melting out of the solder on the rotor.

We shall require soon larger motors of the same type, and I hope that you will be able to furnish them quicker than the first ones.

        Yours very truly,

          My Dear Mr. Tesla:

Referring to your letter of the 25th inst., we have just received advice from Pittsburgh that the next larger frame than the one furnished you with the 50 H>P> motors would be our #8-B “HF” frame, ans this frame would accommodate the 75 H.P., three-phase, 220 volt, 60 cycles, 2 poles motor, the price of which, without bedplate or pulley, but including started, would be $369 net, f.o.b. cars East Pittsburgh.

It would be necessary to use this same frame in case you wanted even the 60 H.P. motor, so it would be just as well to order a 75 H.P., as it would cost no more.

They give us shipment of 75 days, although we think this might be cut down to possibly 60 days. This long shipment is, of course, on account of the excessive speed it is necessary to change the construction very materially from standard speed motors.

We are considering the use of larger induction motors of the high speed type you have furnished to us, and I write you to ascertain whether you could furnish them in larger sizes up to say about 2500 H. Although it might be possible to build such a motor, it would be a very risky proposition, and we would not care to build anything over, say, 200 H.P., 2-pole, 60 cycle. In some special case we might consider building slightly over 200 H.P. size, but we should not care to build very much higher.

                  Dear Sir:

We are pleased to advise you that we shipped to the N. Y. Edison Co., I believe on the 10th, by express collect, the 50 KVA generator and have charged it to loan and replacement account. Pittsburg suggested that since it was for some temporary testing, we could loan it to you for, say, two months, and at the end of this time in case you could make use of it permanently, you could purchase it from us. If, however, you will not have any further use for it then, it can be returned to us and we will make only a slight charge covering the use of same. Of course, if you like, you can buy this outright, but we thought that since it was such a temporary affair we would not expect you to buy the machine unless you found that you could use it permanently.

Kindly advise us if the above arrangement will be satisfactory to you.

                  Yours very truly,

                  My dear Mr. Tesla:

Referring to your inquiry of a day or two ago, we would advise you that the efficiency of 50 KVA, 1200 RPM, generator is as follow:

                  1/2 load..........87%
                  3/4 load..........90%
                  Full load.........91%

These efficiencies are based on power factor 100% and by drawing a curve up you could find any other efficiencies above full load or any under 1/2 load in case you should want anything at these extreme points.

Referring to your favor of Nov. 22Nd, Pittsburg has recently written me inquiring as to how long you would likely require the 50 KVA. Generator lent you about a year ago. I do not know whether you have completed all the tests which you were going to make or not, but would be pleased to hear from you at your convenience as to whether or not you are through with this machine.

                    My Dear Mr. Nesbit:

Your letter has reminded me of the service which the Westinghouse Company, through your offices, rendered me a year ago, and which I greatly appreciate. I am still carrying out experiments but could return the generator at once, if I did not think that my associates would prefer to purchase the same. One of them is now in Mexico and I cannot get hold of him immediately, but as soon as he returns, which will probably be at the end of the coming week, I shall take the subject up with him and have no doubt that he will follow my suggestion of purchasing the dynamo.

Today happening to be my New Year, I take the opportunity of reciprocating heartily in your good wishes.

                      My dear Mr. Tesla:

I believe I have not heard from you since your letter of January 14th relative to the generator which we loaned you for making some tests, and presume you are still using same for this purpose. So that I can make out my monthly report to Pittsburg on apparatus loaned. Would be pleased to hear from you the probable time that you will be through with this generator.

                      My dear Mr. Nesbitt:

Your letter of the 4th inst. Reminds me of another unfulfilled obligation. I should have informed you that two of my associates had gone down to Mexico and after considerable difficulty in getting out of the country have finally managed to start on their return journey to New York where they are to arrive in a few days. As soon as I see them I shall take up the matter of the generator with them and will communicate with you at once.

I would much prefer to retain your dynamo as I look upon it as a sort of historical exhibit which may in time to come, be of value.

Assuring you that I greatly appreciate the service rendered by the Westinghouse Company and yourself, personally, I remain,

                      My dear Mr. Nesbitt:

Your favor of May 7th finds me under the same conditions as regards to the disposition of the machine which you kindly placed at my disposal. I look at it now rather as an historical exhibit which I am anxious to preserve and the matter would have been attended to already had it not been that my associate to whom I referred in previous correspondence, on his return from Mexico had to go abroad and will not be back for two or three weeks. We had hardly time to meet and discuss important business matters.

If you will permit me I shall retain the machine longer, being confident that I can arrange for its purchase. It would hardly be fair to return it now after it had been in service for so long a time.

With thanks for your past courtesies, I remain,

                      Very truly yours,

I was very glad to receive your letter of June eighteenth and to learn that you are still following my work with interest.

As regards my latest invention, the turbine, I believe that I have been fortunate for the new principle will unquestionably play an important part in many industries in the near future. I am now concentrating on a number of applications in which extreme lightness and high performance is of paramount significance. No turbine or engine of any kind so far devised can compete with mine in this field. You should not be at all surprised if some day you see me fly from New York to Colorado Springs in a contrivance which will resemble a gas stove and weigh almost as much.

                        With regards,

                            Dear Sir:

A biography of Mr. Westinghouse which will present the man and his work from the standpoint of those who knew him best is under way. Mr. C.A.Terry is Chairman of the Committee on Preparation and Col. H.G.Prout is Secretary and Editor. The biography will be treated by episodes and topics rather than as a chronological history. The material is to be supplied by those who have special knowledge and will write of the things they know. These contributions may be of such length and in such form as suits the inclination ans convenience of the writer. The material will be taken by Col.Prout, whose editorial ability and whose acquaintance with Mr. Westinghouse peculiarly fit him for constructing the final work from the contributions which he receives.

This is an opportune time to get from those who were close to Mr. Westinghouse, a fairly complete record of their contact with him. The fuller this is, particularly with regard to those personal incidents which are not known to others, the better; it will constitute a file of personal history which it would be impossible to obtain in a few years from now. His personality impressed itself most – much more than the things he did. Such a record will be valuable as a private record, even though it may be too much to publish. The Committee is, therefore, hoping to secure many contributions toward the biography in the way of personal knowledge and recollection of Mr. Westinghouse – either facts and incidents, or opinion and appreciation. It is better to contribute too much than too little.

I happen to be the member of the Committee most closely connected with the Electric Company, and Col.Prout has asked me to take up the securing of all the material that I can. Hence this direct request to you, and I am sure you will be glad to do your part.

Please send your contribution to me, Room 202, East Pittsburgh Works, or drop me a line saying that you will do so a little later. If the material is typewritten and can be sent in duplicate, it will be appreciated.

                            Very truly yours,

                            CFS:CME Chas. F. Scott,

                            Dear Mr. Tesla:

The enclosed letter outlines a plan for making a biography of Mr. Westinghouse. I am sure you will be glad to contribute your estimate of the man, with incidents which bring out the striking features of his character and personality.

                            My dear Mr. Scott:

I regret that owing to circumstances which I can not explain in this letter my whole correspondence for the past two weeks has been held up. Had it been otherwise youwould have heard from me promptly in reply to your favor of July 30th.

A biography of Mr. Westinghouse would be most welcome indeed. His personality was altogether unusual and his success phenomenal. To publish such a book at this time is an excellent idea.

I am afraid that the contribution from me will be quite insignificant but I shall revolve the subject in my mind and communicate with you in due course.

                            Very truly yours,

                            Dear Sir,

In the August 7th issue of the Electrical World, there was a very excellent picture of yourself, a copy of which we should be very glad indeed to obtain. Our immediate purpose is to use it to illustrate some memoirs being prepared by our Mr. Lamme, and if you could either send a copy of it or let me know from what photographer I may get a copy I should appreciate it greatly.

                                Dear Mr. Herr :

The enclosed may interest you in connection with the subject I discussed with Mr. Scott Saturday before last.I naturally anticipate that you have had little time to devote to wireless development and it will probably be news to you that, with the exception of non-essentials, nothing is employed in the art except devices of my invention. But the plants are ridiculously inefficient owing to the fact that the experts are completely misled by the Hertz-wave theory.

As you may see from the papers, the General Electric Company are evidently endeavoring to realize my “World-System” but they will never succeed with any such apparatus as they propose to install.

If you are desirous to inaugurate a wireless system a century ahead of that in use at present, I can put you in the position to do so, provided that your company is willing to come to an understanding with me on terms decidedly more generous than those under which they acquired my system of power transmission thirty years ago.

                                Yours sincerely,

                                __________________________________________________ ___________

We recently asked you for a photograph of yourself for use in the memoirs that our Mr. Lamme is preparing. In response you sent us a very handsome portrait study of yourself, which has now been framed and hung in one of our offices. I regret to say, however, that inasmuch as this as taken through a soft focus lens, it is not suitable for reproduction in the form of a half tone, and I am wondering if you could let us have an ordinary photograph of yourself for this purpose.

I regret having to trouble you in this matter, but we are very anxious to have your photograph in these memoirs and we shall appreciate anything you can do for us.

                                Very sincerely,

                                W. H. Easton

                                Mr. Nikola Tesla,
                                #8 West 40th Street,
                                New York.

                                My dear Mr. Tesla:

I have just received a report from our Engineers, after reviewing Prof. Scott's report of his interview with you.

Our situation in Radio Work has somewhat changed and is not now needing any vigorous development policy. We are, therefore, for the present abating some of our development activities; and, as your situation is one requiring great deal of developmental work, there will be no possibility of our going ahead in a way that would concern you within the near future.

I will be glad to keep your situation in mind; and, should ours change, I will communicate with you.

I thought it best to let you know this frankly so that you would not be under a misapprehension of our position.

                                Yours very truly,

                                E. M. Herr

                                President.

                                Nov. 15, 1920.

                                E. M. Herr, Esq.,
Pres., Westinghouse Electric & Mfg. Co.,
                                Pittsburgh, Pa.

                                My dear Mr. Herr :

Many years ago I went to Pittsburgh with the view of purchasing from your company the power equipment for my wireless “World System” plant which I was constructing. On that occasion I met your directors and other prominent officials and, after a discussion on the development of my alternating system, one of them remarked, “ You may be sure, Mr. Tesla, that nothing will be turned down that you may put before the Westinghouse Company.” I have carried this conviction over since, knowing that men of that stature usualy feel a sense of obligation towards a pioneer who lays the foundation to their successful business. This is also the reason why in my conference with Mr. Scott I did not think it necessary to enlarge on numerous inventions and subjects requiring special knowledge or to make any particular effort of impressing him favorably.

In view of this I was not quite prepared for your letter of November 11th in which you define frankly your position.

In the first place, I was astonished and keenly disappointed that the matter should have been put before your engineers as I would never submit anything to them except complete plans, thoroughly worked out every detail. My understanding was that you would not consult anybody beside Mr. Scott.
