I am working my way up from the basic Tesla circuits up to the Magnifying Transmitter, because I want to truly understand each and every part of it.

fantastic writeup

have you thought about trying the same tests with direct current in and not AC like you are using ?
I only ask because tesla bothered to use a rotary switch that was connected to a synchronous AC motor (connected to the same AC power) to change the input to many of his coils to DC, they did not have diodes back then, (and not sure the ones we have now would be up to the task either.)
so why did he convert the 50KV input to his Colorado Springs coil from AC to DC when the AC was so easy to build when comparing ?

Hi, I indeed tried to use a full-wave bridge rectifier to turn my AC input into a DC input. This worked for a little while, until my diodes started catching fire :-p

Tesla's rotary spark gaps indeed create DC pulses from an AC generator, but my AC input works in a similar fashion: it charges charges two capacitors, which then discharge disruptively through a spark gap, also creating DC pulses that ring the circuit.

The only difference is that I use an air quenched gap and Tesla a rotary gap (for his TMT at least). The main benefit of a rotary gap is more consistent timing of the sparks.
