    So you mean that the switch is used to energize the right coil that produces the inward/outward movements. To be more specific, what needs to be energized? My main doubt is that I don't see any rotating element that produces the inward/outward movement.

    The only possible way I see to energize the right coil is to use an electromagnet that, when energized, ejects a metallic piece. Like in a gauss gun.
    I believe the large coil on the right is simply a solenoid which moves the two rails on the sides in and out. The two rails have magnets attached to them, these are the smaller center magnets we see in the animation. As the smaller center magnets move from right to left and vice versa the larger green magnetic rings rotate and the other end of the rotating shaft has the brushes on it. The wires from the brushes energize the large solenoid coil on the right. It may help to explain that he does not show the battery which powers the solenoid coil as this is simply a unique electric motor nothing more.

      Here can be seen more in detail. As you've said, the switch is connected to the coil to energize it. When the coil is energized in a magnetic field the coil is self moved inward/outwards. I think this is the way how it works.
