Shock is subjective to the person. An electrostatic charge can build up over time on metal especially when its cold and dry. Dc voltage doesnt cycle to zero voltage like ac so the shock sensation can be more intense. Given the size of the project and the amount of rebar, the electrostatic buildup was discharged through you. Its the same principle when getting out of a car when the weather is cold and dry and touching a metal door handle or its metal body. Fiberglass or plastic handles wont do it.

Wanted to correct myself. Above i posted that i was getting a reading between a quartz crystal and carbon. After further experimenting i discovered that it was the water on the crystal that was connecting my probe lead with the solution and carbon. So it was a false reading and the crystal does not work oops, sorry. I still would like to try a more pure form of silicon.

It was the middle of summer and about 90 deg F outside so it was not cold. I'm inferring you are saying the charge came from the metal, not from the earth, correct?
I still want to pull 240 V out of an earth battery earth, any ideas?
Anyone have a good patent for this perhaps circa the time of the telegraph or something?

I could see how it could have been a static effect, because I remember asking if anyone else had gotten shocked...No one did so that would lend credence to the theory.
...But, that might be a way to generate a large amount of static electricity, with the use of some sort of grid of metal tied together and then vibrated. I wonder if there are any similar apparatuses or any electrostatic devices that operate on this type of principle.

Hello @all, Newbie here to these threads.
Years ago I did a quick earth battery experiement using the homes water pipe as the earth ground and the home TV antenna (used for picking up local TV stations) and attached a small cap between the two using just one leed off the flat double wire off the antenna. the wires off the antenna was about 1/2' wide and both wires seperated by plastic, seems it was just called antenna wire nothing special. Anyway i got a digital meter reading of about 1.5 volts and 150-250 ma which was always fluctuating like in a long sweep from low ma to high then sweep back down to low. I moved shortly after so was not able to continue to experiment.

Hi everybody,
I finally made an earth battery that lights a joule thief
The winning details are:
Cu and Mg
one pair is all that is needed.
joule thief needs to have NO resistance at the base.
When I shorted it as Freepow suggests, it lit right up.
The soil is a little damp and I assume the moisture will take some time to regulate itself in the pot.
There is a plant too.
Part of the idea is that the micro organisms may resupply ions to the mag ribbon and keep it from disintegrating. Time will tell, but for now this is my success number one on the earth battery. !!!

Here is the schematic.
It is a standard joule thief circuit .
In this case I am using a circuit I made for earth batteries because I was getting such low voltage. It happens to be the only unassigned circuit in the house and I connected it.
I am sure a regular 2N3904 or 2n2222 will work just fine, but I would have to make one to check it.
I will be doing that because I have been using this to discharge my spikes-charged battery, so I will need it.

I have been working on several projects that can run on very low power and I'm anxious to see if your house plant battery will drive any of them. I do think that the metals in the soil might kill the plant but if any plant has a chance of survival---it's the Philodendron.
