  • 2 quick HHO questions

I have decided on a smacks tpy design.
1 what is the best grade of stainless to use and why?
2 it gets WELL below zero here, is freezing of the unit a problem? how do I prevent it or do I abandon the HHO in winter?
    thanks hotbarrel

    1) 316L
    it lasts longer

    2) a certain concentration of KOH or Naoh will prevent freezing, other wise you have to insulate your cell
try the panacea university dot org site and look for the hydroxy course to read why, the bandwidth went through the roof, but it should be back up tomorrow

In simple words to prevent freezing put salt into water. Be aware of fact that poisonous gas will be one of products of electrolysis

        DONT DO THAT,

that's irresponsible , there are solution that are non toxic, why suggest such a thing!!

          Agreed! NO SALT!

A 28% aqueous solution of KOH (or NaOH for that matter) will take you down well below freezing.... NASA uses this level of electrolyte concentration for their fuel cell batteries in Satellites..... gets pretty cold up there!

of course.... you MUST run a current limiting PWM to control your cell when running that strong of an electrolyte.... but it works just fine.

A curious thing tho..... the freeze curve keeps dropping UNTIL you hit an exact concentration level (best to use specific gravity table to get it exact) to achieve the lowest freeze point....

after that.... the MORE you INCREASE the concentration... it does an abrupt U-turn and you start RAISING your freeze point by adding more chemistry (has to do with Molar concentration ratios.)

          cheers.

            thanks guys
I did get 316 so I am off to a prety good start.
