  • The Magnus Effect - 10 times the power

This is a "bug-in-your-ear", FYI and needs to be known posting.

Also known as the Robbins Effect.
Prandtl experimented with rotating cylinders in the wind tunnel (or any fluid) The cylinders created up to ten times more lift than a plane wing, which was quite surprising.
Could this be used in a wind or water turbine?
A normal wind turbine needing 10 mph wind would only need 1 mph?
Could not this leverage the power output?
Are propellers/wings just the wrong way to do some things?
I don't know how this could be used, but it needs to brought to the
attention of those looking for higher efficiencies.

Wind turbine ... you mean something like this?

    V10 (vawt,savonius,vertical axis,windturbine,ametek)

    V8 vawt,savonius,vertical axis,windturbine,ametek)
Are the ravings of a lunatic signs of a genius?

The Magnus effect uses cylinders (closed, no openings, not blades)
The Magnus effect is created by rotating a cylinder in the flow of a
fluid which creates a perpendicular force up to 10 times
greater than that obtained from any blade in that same flow of fluid.

If you could create a windmill out of cylinders that rotate it would
create up to 10 times more power?
See Canadian Star Wars contract for this airship (I just found this) on this web page.

      and thanks for looking.

        Anton Flettner

        Hi Guys,

Here is the Rex Research file on Anton Flettner. It all begins in 1925. Enjoy.

          Yes, very good. Thank you.

When I created this topic, I was thinking I wasn't going research
more, but I couldn't let it go and I had to know more.

I had found this link as well as Flettner had created a windmill
          using the Magnus effect.

            Free Energy

            Randy,

This thread is a perfect example of an important, but ignored technology. People ask me "where is all of the free energy?" They want some magic invention that will produce electricity at no cost so they can continue to waste energy at their current, irresponsible rate. It's all crazy.

Free energy is ANY ENERGY PROVIDED BY THE NATURAL WORLD. That includes oil, IF you own the well! The fact is, all energy is free BEFORE it enters the economic system!

The Magnus Effect provides huge advantages when harnessed properly. I especially like your idea of using this in ocean currents. The power density would be enormous, even in relatively small units.

            Excellent!

              Spin

It looks to me that this is the same effect that electrons experience in a magnetic field, when a current flows through the wire the election spins cause the wire to move sideways, just like the magnus effect on the rotating cylinder caues the boat to move sidways from the flow of the wind reacting with the rotating cylinder. As above so below :-)

Ignored, yes I agree...and there's forgotten OLD technology as well
                which has been phased-out.

I must admit I too was eye-balling all those next great things, but there
are non-modern ways of producing electricity also.
To truly help most people, the production of electricity must fit in a city dweller's garage.
I sit in the dark with a single CFL light on all the time, for years now.
I'm getting tied of it. Me, I would like to waste some energy if I'm creating
it and be able to see across the room once in a while.

This isn't suppose to be an us against them or we'll show them and rub their nose in it.
That's their game, stop playing that game folks.
People, find the information we need, before it is taken away and then get to work.
We deserve that which nature can provide for us without having to pay, I meant play the economic game.
Investigate the technologies that lost the race, some losers were beat up, not beat out by the winner.

Glad you liked it. Properly is key, so it isn't ignored again.
Curious idea Flettner had was to put normal bladed windmills at the tips of a
Magnus effect windmill cylinder to create the power needed to rotate
the cylinders so you could create power from them.

Remember people, the Magnus effect is reversible via clockwise and counter-clockwise rotation ..
Power extraction does not have to be in a rotational device like a windmill
or turbine. It could go up and down, left and right, diagonally, etc.
Oh Oh, balls work the same way as cylinders do, that's where you get
all that wacky sports play on the balls, the Magnus effect.
I never knew the name if it before or how strong it could be.

I'm not qualified to comment on this. My knowledge in electronics is about
at the level of changing a CFL light bulb without reading the instructions.

                  Yep, Windmill application

More power than flat blade wind turbines.
Has slower rotation speed but greater torque.
The wind causes the cylinders (blades) to rotate causing
the Magnus effect which causes the 90 degree force which
                  turns the windmill, See Video
                  Product Page

I had not realized such small diameter cylinders would produce useful power.
Seems I wasn't the only one thinking it would make a good windmill..

This that BIG BALL Air Ship

The Magnus effect appears when a sphere is rotated and moves in air both at same time. The rotation axis is perpendicular to the speed axis. The air is slowed down on one side and increased in speed on other side. By that a one sided force is generated on the sphere.
