  • releasing more floodwater from the dams!

They held up as much water as they could in all the dams, because for the last few years the water has run short. And of course like a bunch of silly children they just thought that holding more water would fix the problem of running out, however when the dams are all full and "letting go excess" already, the rivers and creeks are all higher to start with.

If the dams had some reserve capacity left they could have caught the rain then let it go slowly. It's all about poor planning and morons. Without any common sense being used it's just a lottery. Pray for us.

I think your right Farmhand and unfortunately, it appears they will be releasing more flood water from the dams!

Brisbane evacuated as floodwaters threaten city

Brisbane Mayor Campbell Newman said some 6,500 homes, businesses and properties would be flooded within the city's borders by Thursday.
Yesterday's events brought the overall death toll in Queensland since the two-week-old flood crisis started to 18.

Entire towns have been swamped, more than 200,000 people affected, and coal and farming industries virtually shut down.

Brisbane Mayor Campbell Newman said some 6,500 homes, businesses and properties would be flooded within the city's borders by Thursday.

'Today is very significant, tomorrow is bad, and Thursday is going to be devastating for the residents and businesses affected.'

He said Brisbane's main dam, which had so far protected the city from flooding, was full and authorities now had to release water which would send floods into the city.

Better weather forecasting could have helped prepare everyone for this tragedy and maybe others will learn from this and provide excess and safe spillage of water when the dams are full, rather than having to let it flow into an already flooded area!!!

We all pray there will be no more deaths and minimum harm.

      • I am always saying that stupidity of men is the greatest mystery and
unfortunately one of the greatest power of destruction in this world too...
God help us all, because we all need a lot of help every day even when
it seems that everything is just fine, because in the very next moment
our lives could be turned upside down, one earthquake, one conflagration,
one flood, one car accident, sudden illness or sudden death of our nearest,
and in the second we see how we are helpless in the face of destiny...
But how many of us consider this fact with due respect before some serious strike of destiny hit us ?...
So, Farmhand, our prays are with you and your countrymen !
Take care and stay alive !
Do you have enough ammunition for those crocodiles ?
It frightens me most of all, not to mention snakes...
That wilderness of Australia is epic beauty i guess but when it becomes
dangerous it must be epic jeopardy too...
So God bless you all our distant brothers !

        Cheers !

On a serious disturbing note. some are still saying that the flooding is due to "global warming"

Richard, Oxford, 11/1/2011 20:50 -- you ask " where is all of this water coming from?" The answer is the SEA . There is a La Nina event occurring . The moisture is coming in from the NNE over the sea and turns to rain over the land .What is odd is the intensity of this otherwise regular event . One good explanation for the extreme rainfall is higher sea surface temperatures driven by ..you guessed it .. global warming . It has rained everywhere on the east seaboard since around November ( but meanwhile Western Australia experiencing severe drought and bush fire !!!). Worldwide nature is sending us a BIG warning . I just hope we are listening before its too late . This flood will be the biggest in QLD history and rain will continue until at least MAY ..How so? Well the Southern Oscillation Index is well into the positive and a glance at the charts shows it doesn't change quickly . While its positive it rains . Good luck to those in the flood

          • Global Warming. Yeah Sure,
At last they found a Reason for herself again for it.
And its just for sure not the Oilspill what occured.
But who knows, maybe the Oil spill was caused by Golbal Warming too.

            • One of the most influential people I ever saw live, was Dixy Lee Ray, back in 1991, at SFU. Pitted against the best panel of doctorates Vancouver, BC Canada could offer (SFU, UBC & BCIT + privates) she stood alone, with her 5 ft stack of references and debated on all major environmental issues. At that time, Ozone Layer Depletion was huge.

I'll continue to look for an actual reference so that I'm backed up, but, the most profound thing I ever heard her say, went something like: (and bear in mind this was 91) "Today it's the Ozone, tomorrow it will be Terrorism, then it will Carbon Dioxide, when will it stop, when we all have to pay carbon tax?" - i will see if I can find an exact reference to that comment, but in the meantime, check this out:

An interview from the Fall, 1992, issue of Science and the Environment. A Publication of the Acton Institute for the Study of Religion and Liberty.

R&L: With the world-wide decline of socialism, many individuals think that the environmental movement may be the next great threat to freedom. Do you agree?

Ray: Yes, I do, and I’ll tell you why. It became evident to me when I attended the worldwide Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro last June. The International Socialist Party, which is intent upon continuing to press countries into socialism, is now headed up by people within the United Nations. They are the ones in the UN environmental program, and they were the ones sponsoring the so-called Earth Summit that was attended by 178 nations.

R&L: Did you have a specific purpose in attending the Earth Summit?

Ray: I was sent there by the Free Congress Committee, headed by Paul Weyrich. Fred Smith and I were sent down as observers, with reporters’ credentials, so we could witness the events. One of the main organizers of the program, Prime Minister Gro Harlem Brundtland of Norway was the assistant executive for the conference. She is also the vice-president of the World Socialist Party. When she was questioned by Brazilian reporters after her talk and asked if what they were proposing didn’t have a peculiar resemblance to the agenda of the World Socialist Party she said, “Well, of course.” That was reported in Brazil but not picked up by the American press.

If the climate science model is bunk,i still think maybe we should consider that the climate is still going to drastically change in future?. Not sure what the poles shift in Russia is going to do, let me guess blame it on global warming too?

                • Hey Ash,

                  Good to hear.

I think a lot of people who disbelieve in Global Warming Claims and such, really (if they follow my train of thought) aren't so much in disbelief that our planet is displaying change, rather, we are being sold down the river if we think getting on the UN bandwagon and the Al Gore movement will help in any way. It's a cashgrab. Carbon tax is a lie. That's what I believe.

One of Dixy Lee Ray's great points was (more or less) "No study regarding the Earth's conditions, if conducted over less than 5000 years has any merit due to the incorrectness of the sample set. The Earth is far too old, and weather has far to long of a chronological history to give merit to a study of 20,50 or even 100 years. There is no way to prove that that sample set is representative of anything man did, or if it is part of a 100,000 or even 1,000,000 year cycle."

So suddenly our politicians expect us to believe they have grave evidence that 20-100 years worth of data has lead them to inconclusiveness. Bull$#%! - there are PHD's would strongly disagree. Those PHD's are not likely backed by anyone's money to substantiate their theories and arguments. Some of them are even in hiding claiming their lives have been threatened. So what's really going on here. I don't know, but I believe carbon tax is a lie...

                    • January Rain

My thoughts and prayers go out to all those in Australia & Brazil!

It is quite a bit milder here but really cold. Just had 7 inches of snow
from early this morning to this afternoon. And to top it off - we're scheduled
for pretty much nonstop rain for the next week - in the middle of January!!? I went to grab some wood and it is raining right now.

Supposedly it will be a bit above freezing so maybe we won't get perpetual
ice skating rinks on the roads but we're in for a big mess.

Just as long as it isn't like Ice Storm back in 1996 or whenever, that was
very beautiful but also one of the craziest freak weather experiences to hit.
Knocked the city out for a while. Crazy to see it so cold and rainy that the
rain instantly freezes upon contact. Entire trees encased in pure
transparent ice talk about beautiful but so destructive at the same time!
All the torment of falling trees everywhere, power outages, people freezing,
                      etc...
                      Sincerely,

                          January 12, 2011, 10:04 PM EST
                          (Bloomberg)
-- Australia’s Queensland state, battered by fatal floods this week, faces the “high” likelihood of a cyclone forming in the Coral Sea off its northeast coast, the Bureau of Meteorology said on its website today.

The monsoon trough, situated over north Queensland and extending across the northern Coral Sea, is expected to strengthen over the next few days and a low may develop over the northern Coral Sea by tomorrow, it said. The system has more than a 50 percent chance of reaching cyclone status by Jan. 16, it said.

Hi Ash, I'm glad your ok, hope things didn't get too nasty on you down there.

If things wern't so serious it would be comical, for sure. They had better get thier story straight soon or the deception they weave will be vaporised.

There was more rain in a similar timeframe in 1974, so the MMGW link to the floods is comletely rediculous and kind of sick that they try to take advantage of it for scare tactics. Luckily there are enough of us that aren't affected by the propaganda and can think for ourselves.

Hi Byjove, Thank goodness that cyclone turned away from us, we could do with a week or two break from the rain. They are inevitable though sooner or later, unfortunately.
