  • EdGray: Just an Ion Tube?

    Hi People,

Regarding the operation of Edwin Grays Tube:

Is it positive Ions (produced by dielectric breakdown at the arc) Grabbing druid electrons from the grids? Or a shock wave from the arc blasting druid electrons from the grids? both?

Shock wave creating the radiant event???

The arc jumps into the shorter rod with the resistance behind it, causing the druid gas electrons from the smaller rod to spray out onto the grids, maybe causing an avalanche of grid electrons.

Inversely; The Arc jumps from the shorter rod to the longer rod causing an extreme deficit of electrons which in turn cause the electrons from the grids to be drawn to the short rod.

The motion of those electrons would cause broadband radiation. We all have seen and heard on radios.

Atached is a circuit I drew in 2002 it should work either way described above.

If it works at all, ionic operation can be confirmed by pulling a vacuum on the tube and seeing if operation continues. On the other hand a pressurized tube may operate even better? Select gasses better than others...

    Best regards to all
    Dave

    Very nicely done diagram!

Your diode looks like it's acting as a high frequency capacitance. Moray did say that a valve doesn't block a reverse signal, only reverse current (DC). And a spark definitely produces an rf signal as it discharges a cap.

It would be nice if this circuit does drive the LV amps with the HV pressure. If so, it would amplify, and increase, the input power.

As for your questions, *hot-carrier emission* will work with either electrons or ions. And yes, it is the shock wave which releases the energy. Regarding the pressure, the Imris patent has charts which detail the increasing efficiency, with pressure:

OPTICAL GENERATOR OF AN ELECTROSTATIC - Google Patents

Imris also says, somewhere else, that the type of gas is important. Energy from his Tube will decrease the resistance of an arc gap when the Tube is filled with Xenon, while the energy will increase the gap's resistance, using Neon as the gas.

My friend Kiril Chukanov says that dry air will work well enough. He's invented the Photon Torpedo, which is hundreds, even thousands of times more powerful than a nuclear burst.

      Hi List,

      Thanks Electrotek,
      Very Interesting..

Its real good to hear about others that have tried these type circuits.

Since electrons flowing in a circuit are supposed to be moving at inches per hour or some other *long* time interval, The amount of electrons in motion in the gap and tube would imply a higher power effect.

Inert gasses wont ruin the electrodes as quickly as oxygen and its oxides.
