It is essentially a length of parallel conductor
transmission line with a shorting bar at the
far end. This makes up a "resonant line" which
is capable of producing standing waves on the
parallel lines at all frequencies to which the
length of the line is an appropriate wavelength
(fraction or multiple.)
Its drawback is that some portion of the energy
contained within its resonance will "radiate" into
the surrounding space unless it is shielded.
The shorting bar at the opposite end is a near
perfect reflector of radiant (RF) energy.
The "shorted line resonator" is an efficient
tuned circuit for high frequencies and is the
principle upon which the resonant cavity is
understood.

How_did_Tesla_arrive_at_this_design ? What was his train of thought?
His thoughts would have been like an "express" train or "trains" of very high velocity. As was normal for him I guess. Sometimes his thoughts met with each other in resonance sometimes not.
But seriously Tesla's ability to see how nature works was inspirational, he probably seen it somewhere in nature and then built it. First go no probs.
Cheers

Can you come up with a similar design out of thin air?

the future we cannot know the answers to
your questions about him.
In time we shall know.
Some have conjectured that Nikola was influenced
by beings of greater intelligence than humankind
and was therefore privy to very advanced knowledge.
Tesla was somehow very far ahead of his time.

History of the "Hairpin"
I have stated this before. If you read “secrets of cold war technology” by Vassilatos you will know why and how Tesla came up with the “Stout copper bar circuit” that I renamed “The Hairpin” because it looks like a hairpin that my wife uses in her hair. In short Tesla was trying to study the Hedge-bush effect on wires when a high potential of DC was sent down a wire and was killing people at the other end. In order to not need a large DC generator he charged a capacitor bank up to high potential and would send that down the wire...then he decided to see what would happen if he just shorted it out...it hurt his body...thinking it was just a shock wave he built a shield and repeated the test...and it hurt again. So this time he used a copper shield and again it hurt...so finally he built a copper box to sit in and even this hurt just as much even though the box was grounded. He continued his testing and found amazing effects would happen inside a hoop that was used to short the caps...and at some point he stacked a set of copper disks in a stack like a big capacitor and found that he could make huge electric discharges on the top of the stack. Then he discovered that the stack could be made out of a coil of wire similar to how we (people now not of Tesla's time) make the secondary of a Tesla coil...( I use the term similar as he used a space between his wires and most of you don't ) . You will notice that there are several ways to wire up the Hairpin. I only showed one way but I have done it several ways. These are the several ways Tesla made the primary of the Tesla coil. Tesla was experimenting with this coil without the secondary when he discovered the strange effects he was getting within the single turn primary. So that is the story of the “Hairpin circuit” of Tesla. At lest the very short version. Read the Book!

This is my first post, and I am new to the net.
Howdy Y'all
This is to Karl Palsness.
I noticed that someone had asked your frequency of operation on your hairpin device. It occurs to me that if you were able to get a fairly accurate measurement between the nodes of brightness and the nodes of no light activity that your shoulf be able to ascertain the wavelength and hence the frequency. This is of course assuming that the radient energy or scalar waves act the same as hertzian waves.
However in a time space continuuum layout 3D graph one aquare touches the intersection of four other squares; hence the inverse square law applies to a linear wave as in sound but not to the scalar. Scalar touches the points of a tetrahexahedron in a cirular fashion and sees no resistance in distance of space time going to the next set of four squares. Hence the wavelength may not be measured the same since it is a spiral. I have a lot of research on sound and light, and there are linear (straight waves) and scalar waves (circular) that occur at the same time. The evidence of the scalar wave is seen in the octave curve of a piano or harp and is projected but we only perceive the linear wave in our ears as audio. The lenear wave is subject to the inverse square law but the scalar is not. Scalar hence is non shieldable by a faraday cage. However a series of haripins might be used to act as a competitive inhibition device to scalar waves.
I am looking into makeing a radiant accumulator that may couple to the hairpin in hopes of evaluating its properties with OHM law type curcuits I.E. VOM and oscilloscope and Fq. counter. I have several ideas I am in the process of making that in theory should be radiant accumulators.

Hello, dear Friends!
Thanks to Karl and everybody who are bringing Tesla`s works to life! It`s a great advance.
Decided to build a low-power Hairpin. It consumes only 4 watts and produces enough radiant energy to power 100V neon bulb. The same effects noted above are observed.
Also one additional. If we take off the glorious copper rod above the capacitors and power the bulb in the water, we would see the same light emission but plus hydrogen emission in one of electrodes. Think it proves that two types of energy are going through the same wires and that tall rod is only the filter. It simply wastes the normal electricity, providing the pure radiant energy for us. That`s what we are paying for!
But in this case I don`t get what Bedini says in "Energy From The Vacuum" that we can`t mix the radiant and hot energy.
In addition - the equivalent effect can be achieved by the circuit, proposed by Tesla in his 462418 patent "Method Of And Apparatus For Electrical Conversion And Distribution". The simple high-voltage relaxation oscillator.
The next question - how can we use it for powering the load having overunity effect. Did someone try to calculate the output and what was the achievements?
And about the rod - as far as I concern, only the length matters will it waste both energies or only hot. And the diameter - will it blow up from the hot energy or not.
If I`m wrong somewhere, please put me on the place!
Thanks a lot and take care,
Mieow >:3

Can you provide a picture of your spark gap on this configuration ?
It's difficult to see or arrangement on the backside of the board.
Thanks,

Sorry not a Tesla circuit
I built a small device about eight months ago. At the time I was also fascinated with its operation. So I did my own research on the subject reading some old books and I got to tell you what I found out was enlighting and rather shocking.
There is a good reason why Tesla never patented the 'Stout copper wire' circuit. The circuit was not devised by Tesla at all. If the book 'secrets of cold war technology' states so then it's pure B.S. fiction.
The credit needs to go to 'Ernst Lecher' and the circuit is called 'Lecher arrangement' and it should be called just that not 'stout copper wires' or 'hairpin'. Poor Ernst Lecher gets not credit and to boot his hard work went to Tesla because some fools didn't do the research. On top of that someone changed the name to Hairpin and did him a double disgrace.
* Some (real) history on that circuit.
- The Lecher arrangement is dated earlier then 1888.
- The Lecher arrangement originated with Lodge and Hertz (specifically the Hertz resonator)
- Two other people 'Sarasin' and 'De La Rive' advanced on the 'Hertz resonator' prior to Lecher final arrangement.
- Back in the late 1890's 'Stationary waves' was the cat's meow. Tesla spent the majority of his career working with them.
* About the circuit.
- The Lecher arrangement is used for creating "Stationary Electric Waves' on parallel wires. (that's a fact)
- The discharge of the spark-gap sets up oscillatory currents in the rods and rapid oscillations of potential in the plates.
- For best performance the ends of the rod should be insulated.
- The parallel wires are coupled electrostatically to the oscillator.
- (Important) The length of the parallel wires/rods should be set up with respect to the frequency being used (oscillations).
- It is the 'interference' of the 'direct' and 'reflected' waves that establish 'Stationary waves' of potential and current on the parallel bars.
- The circuit has nothing to do with 'Radiant energy', 'Scalar waves', and everything to do with 'Stationary waves'.
- Based on the length of the rods verses the frequency one can use a neon light to find the 'nodes' and 'antinodes'.
- When the neon is placed on a node it remains dark. When on a antinode it glows.
Tesla was an advocate of Earth currents. He insisted that the earth was a huge conductor while others doubted him at the time. Tesla most likely used the 'Lecher arrangement' to demonstrate that if 'Stationary waves' can be created in a wire with known antinodes and nodes then they can be created in a 'conductive' earth with known antinodes and nodes. Note that Tesla did patent a 'Stationary wave' generator. This was part of his 'Wireless system'.
So in closing please respect Ernst Lecher good work and stop crediting Tesla or calling it a 'hairpin' you are disrespecting the mans work.
There are plenty of books available that are dated from the years 1890 - 1920 on the subject that are written by well educated people of the time. Unfortunately books written within the last 40 years or so are full of misinformation and kool-aide.
Respectfully,

You are correct! Credit is due to Ernst Lecher. Most people have fallen to the trap of is using the descriptive name "hair pin" instead.
One small detail that must be brought to light, no pun intended, is this potential differences has to be at its greatest between nodes in anti-notes within the stationary wave. It is Tesla that takes the credit for taking advantage of these nodes and anti-notes of potential differences too much further investigation.
So when you say the neon is placed on the node it remains dark when on the anti-note it glows. This is correct for lighting neons with one wire. But the statement can also read….A load can be placed between TWO differentials of potentials to run. When the load is placed between two same potentials, it will not run. Remember there is no current in an electrostatic standing wave! Loads are non-reflective to the input source as well! This is important! The more nodes you create, the more loads you can run with these potential differences all across a single wire! This allows more points to tap into.
Also the delta of the disruptive discharge determines everything when it comes to these potentials of the anti-nodes. You want this electrostatic field to rise with extreme velocity! This can be easily demonstrated with a function generator to an open-ended coil and an averamenko diode to small uf cap at end. Even though this is considered a delay line coil, it is a single wire! When we wrap the windings together more and more, we draw in the magnetic field and lowers the freq. My research has shown that making your coils same length as in diameter, gives you the best results and very sharp Q. Once coil is set and odd harmonic stationary waves are presents, the first stationary quarter wave, then switch the function generator between different sine waves! Then you'll see what I'm talking about. This is why Tesla strove to create very sharp disruptive discharges!
These discharges are massive and very impressive on spark gaps! They are cool and do not hiss. You can also place paper in the discharge and it will NOT flame! You better have ear muffs!!! Watch the Dollard video showing these differences between electrostatic discharges vs. Inductive discharges. Very impressive and insightful!!
The Avaramenko diode plug seems to be everyone’s favorite choice these days. What people fail to understand, is this arrangement is doing just that! Creating potential differences!!
Also, since there is no current flow in the stationary wave of an open-ended system or Lecher's arrangement, this has everything to do with radiant energy! If you watch John Bedini's DVD on Tesla's impulse technology, you'll see lecher’s arrangement as well. This is written on the whiteboard towards the end of the video.
So can I ask. What is your definition of radiant energy? You don't have to answer this. My point, is I respectfully disagree with you that this is not radiant energy. You just have not seen how to collect this form of energy or translate it yet.
There is a lot to learn on this forum on how to collect from the potentials only!
