  • 1940s Electricity from sunlight

    Hi

I noticed in my 1940s electricity book, reference to a violet glass frame, filled with many hundred little metallic plugs. This produced enough electricity to charge a strorage battery in 10 hours, enabling the lighting of 30 large tungsten lights for 3 day. Sounds quite good, however I cannot find any more info about this system. Has anyone come across this system and know of how it was constructed?

    Regards

    John

    Hi John,

    Cool stuff
Interesting, never discount old technology. It's out there waiting to be
rediscovered or just dug up after being buried, lost or forgotten. ?suppressed?
    .
This talks about creating electricity using
    violet glass
here on page 510. I don't know what volume
page 510 is in, but vol X is dated November 1876 to April 1877 in the
publication called "The Popular Science Monthly"

Here it speaks about violet glass, stating: "The peculiar kind of glass in question is known as "pot metal blue," that is, it is stained a bluish violet throughout, and is not clear glass covered with flashings of blue glass."

Oh, This speaks about "light becomes absorbed, light changes into heat, and heat into electricity; in fact, light in its radiant visible character only shows one of its many phases."

Here is speaks of "Mixtures of raw materials used to make three types of coloured glass" on page 8.
violet glass: white sand, sodium carbonate, potassium nitrate, potassium nitrate, manganese dioxide and iron oxide.

Found a strange glass made in 1946 that heated red hot and then plunged into ice water. The severest temperature shock will not break or even crack it

Let us know how this goes John...
