No, I did not try a thyratron, I studied it. It's very expensive, it has a short life, and it does not do the JOB for as much as it costs.

I don't want to distract from the gray motor discussion.

Hmm. This thread died out pretty quickly.
Shame really.
Erfinder sent me a link that may prove interesting for those involved with HV capacitive discharge.

TV4Free, you may also want to check out Erfinders HV engine he is building. A link can be found in the "window motor replication" thread.

Hi,
Like you I am replicating Grays motor. I am currently about 60% of the way through machining all of the components for a 9/3 pole version. Mine is aluminium construction, compact (8"x16"), but should produce 10+HP. Enough to run a 5KVA alternator.
I have already made a number of switching tubes, and I am currently working on the 12v/4kv power supply and timing control. I want to experiment with a few different configurations.
Thank you for posting your video. It was great to see your prototype running. Terrific work, and an inspiration to the rest of us.
The information that you have posted is very helpful, but I have a few questions..?
Most importantly, what guage wire did you use and how many turns. (I see that you have a LOT of turns there compared to Gray's coils).
Also, what is the diameter/width/depth of your coils. Did you "mass match" the two magnet cores?
In the video, it looks as if you are using the two coils of magnet wire as a shunt. Is this so? And if so are you replicating Gray's "floating static flux field"?
I hope that you are still participating in this discussion, and I hope to hear back from you.
Regards,
