I never did an exact replicate as I didn't want to invest in some of the parts and use what I already had. Turns out that I found another way to configure the magnetic fields on the end and create a balanced low-drag equilibrium that may very well work.
I'm currently working on finding an easy but highly efficient motor design.

Working in this area is a hobby so I'm learning as I go but I'm like an opportunistic fish (like many others on here and other forums) that easily get distracted by other projects that look promising and easier to create.
Despite slow progress on some of my own projects, I am quite optimistic that something is going to break soon!

Not sure about the Don Smith reference... I don't see the correlation between the two designs. The Dan Quale idea is to invert how magnetic flux is transferred to electrical power from the standard generator concept to one of rapidly oscillating magnetic flux through a coil suspended between two magnets. It's easiest to understand when seen in 3D so I whipped up a 3D model to flush out the idea further in my own mind some time ago...

Here's an early prototype to test a theory on balancing the magnetic strength of the stator Neo's (Note those pie shaped Neo's are incredibly strong yet the rotor turns quite easily due to a balancing of the attractive forces)

My current setup is significantly farther along but I'm still working out some design issues to lock and stabilize the rotors better.
