While I was referring to a permanent magnet, an electromagnet would provide substantially more power if a coil were added. How about a lawnmower magneto timed just right to provide an electromagnetic boost? Something to think about anyway, just in case you don't get it to completely selfrun. Good Luck. Stealth

That motion-emulating Physics software I found a while back would come in right handy trying to figure out the angle needed for sliding fishing weights + the length they need to travel. But yesterday I was looking at this economy box of ink pens sitting over here...
I took the spring out of one and you know, I think that little spring would work really fine because even though the weight will be heavy it won't be sliding very far nor all that hard <> so I think I've solved the compression spring. Even though I was ruling out needing them. But a little gentle spring from an ink pen could be a very good middle road compromise.Last edited by CloudSeeder; 06-25-2009, 06:31 PM. Bump-Helper Second System Design:
Since the "main system" with the two opposed arms is working exactly the way it's needed to work I believe it would be best to leave it alone... and put the secondary system as a separate construction to the side of it. (This works because the shaft is spinning.) It needs to be made so it can be repositioned on the hub shaft til the correct position has been discovered.
Once that position is obvious it can be added into the main system on subsequent models.

Seocondary Gravity System Construction Tips => Tinker Toys!
The main system is metal threaded rods, metal bolts & nuts, and flopping metal weights. So trying to make a secondary system my mind kept wanting to use the same materials, being on the same hub and in the same system.
Well, that's wrong thinking! This other system would be best to construct as a tinker toy system, just drill equally-spaced holes partly into the dowel hub-shaft and some chopsticks from down at the restaurant, done deal.
Tip #2 though is you need to cut the notches in the wood "posts" first in order to have them all the exact same distance out from the hub.
#3: A sewing wire can then be strung from the outer notch of one to the slightly closer notch on the next post (being two notches per post). This will set up the same angles on the weight slides all around the post.
This system will be best to use because it doesn't represent much $$$ invested so if the angles or number of weights turns out to be too few or too many, or an even number of sliding weights doesn't work so a 3rd post has to be added, scrapping it off and making another won't be such lost monies.

Roanoke Virginia Circuit Box Savings APCP Bill
Copy of APCO Usage History. Usage began declining in March 2009 because the boy got married, so his computers went dark. And his two monitors. Since then the next two months continued declining as I got better at turning off appliances not being used, eliminating "trickle current", plus keeping the hot water elements turned off so the water heater stopped staying at maximum heat 24 hours a day. It gets turned on ahead of washing dishes and showers but they're usually in the evening so that's less rates. Lowest usage we've ever had since moving in...
Be nice if the switchbox was automated and had a $69.00 timer on the water heater.
The hot months will be here soon so we'll see how it goes with the heatpump running... which I should add that the new maintenance man discovered a wire loose since May 2008 that the heatpump fan wasn't running only the blower up here pulling. It runs much less now. Duh. Money down the drain for 12 months is all. I'll get it all back after I clean out the fridge and shut it off. I want to see just how efficient this place can be. Besides, the refrigerator running is HEATING THE APARTMENT...
making the heatpump AC run more. Shutting it off takes two birds with one stone.
I'll be back.

Apco Rates Graph
The previous post's APCO Usage graph for my apartment... if you look closely, October and November are nearly identical usage but the billing shows a sharp spike upward. That was when APCO needed more money. They pull a nice trick here in Virginia also because they appear to pass through increases immediately without discussion or approval then the Gov has to come back LATER and adjust it down. That represents a hefty satchel of loaned money they draw interest on?
The sooner I whittle my usage down the cleaner I will feel, without a shower.

Wow. Way to go. I am going to have to get going myself. Southwest Va representative is talking energy tax on everything, gas, electric, coal, oil,
kerosene,,diesel. An article in the newspaper today claims as much as $3600 in new taxes for Virginians next year. Don't laugh, your state will be next. Also I found out that as of 2010 all incadesent light bulbs will cease to exist nationwide. You will burn CFl or LED. Also I can't buy mercury vapor outside lights anymore. All have gone to lower voltage and less lighting incadesent bulbs.I don't know what they will be in the future.
I have to start my future plans now, if I am going to have any control over my energy situation. Good Luck. Stealth

Roll Your Own Bulbs <> Like Thomas Edison!
Well, you just hafta set up some sweat shops and get some illegal alien children to work for the day's bread and roll your own lightbulb filaments. Until they find your stash and throw it all overboard. I still haven't turned off the refrigerator yet... but I'll have to because I have given in to Gluttony.
I've been watching TV sshhh.

Stealth: actually, I think having LED lighting would be the better choice. Like, these flourescents and also the energy savers, the ones overhead my computer and also the big one in the kitchen are both putting out loud humming. If I had my druthers I would druther not be using them. Wonder what happened to the new bulbs? This fellow made some DC bulbs by adding a AC to DC in the bulb base. Seems like they would be the best light of all.

I agree. I am in the process of installing LED lights in my house, after I do some more tests. I just don't want to be told I have to. I think we should have a choice of what energy systems we use since we are the ones paying for them. I didn't mean to come off as negative about saving energy, to the contrary. I am like every other american, I want to save money wherever I can. I just don't like the fact we are told what, when, where and how to do it. I bought a solar panel of 12 volts and 1.8 watts to see how efficient it would be to supplying electricity to a battery. With this battery, I am going to string up some LED's and see how much I need to power them. Good Luck. Stealth

The Fall of Crude Oil Has Begun!
I don't know about anybody else but I feel like we in the Forums here are beginning to have an impact on world crude oil consumption => http://www.nytimes.com/2009/07/10/bu...html?th&emc=th <><> My last month's electric bill, looks like it has dropped another $13. with the sliding weights the way I want to try them, then clamp it onto the hub.
I'll need to either purchase or fabricate from wood a round piece cut in two and screws to hold it together. It would clamp these two "C" pieces around the hub axle. I can drill it without pushing down on the hub, fix it with the sliding weights the way I want to try them, then clamp it onto the hub.
That way after a couple turns doesn't work, loosen the clamp and turn to a slightly different angle, fine-tuning the position. Any ideas where to purchase something like that, a half-half clamp? Stealth?
